Mosquito fish are very small freshwater fish native to the United States that eat mosquito larvae. They have a greenish sheen, upturned mouth, and flattened head. Mosquito fish were introduced worldwide as a form of biological control to reduce mosquito populations in over 70 countries. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and survive in inhospitable environments with low oxygen or high salt concentrations. Females give live birth to 50-100 young every six weeks when breeding during the summer months.
