REPORTED SPEECH (2) Questions, commands and other reporting verbs.
REPORTED QUESTIONS We use the verb ASK when we are reporting a question. E.g. Sarah asked : «Are you married?» Sarah asked IF I was married.
REPORTED QUESTIONS If the original question has an interrogative pronoun, we don’t use IF. We use the interrogative pronoun. Compare: Sarah asked : «Are you married?» Sarah asked IF I was married Sarah asked : « Why are you married?» Sarah asked why I was married.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE WORD ORDER. The original questions are interrogatives, but the reported questions are affirmatives. So the word order is subject-verb-object . Jason asked: «Have you got a car?» Jason asked if I had a car .
QUESTIONS WITH «DO»
REPORTED COMMANDS
WHAT ARE REPORTED COMMANDS? Reported commands are ORDERS you give to someone else. They are the reported speech version of the imperative. E.g. «Jason, wake up», his mother said. Jason’s mother told him to wake up.
COMPARE: «Jason is sick», his mother said. Jason’s mother told me (that) he was sick. (this is NOT an order) «Jason, wake up», his mother said. Jason’s mother told him to wake up.
We use the structure Tell someone (that) When we want to report something that someone said. BUT we use the structure Tell someone to do something When we want to report an order someone has given to someone else.
COMPARE THE SPANISH AND THE ENGLISH «Jason is sick», his mother said. «Jason está enfermo», dijo su madre. Jason’s mother told me (that) he was sick. La madre de Jason me dijo que estaba enfermo. «Jason, wake up», his mother said. «Jason, levántate», dijo su madre. Jason’s mother told him to wake up. La madre de Jason le dijo que se levantara.
