An assessment of adolescent eating habits in public schools of chak shahzad, ...Zubia Qureshi
Abstract: Eating patterns influence the nutritional status, health, learning process and academic performance of the school children. This study was conducted to explore the food availability at school canteens and food intake by adolescents in break period. A cross sectional study was conducted on 290 adolescents (145 were girls and 145 boys) of 6th, 7th and 8th grade from public schools of Chak Shahzad, Islamabad. Pre-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Chi square / fisher exact test was done by using SPSS to check the association. The mean age of adolescents was 12.6 ± 1.33 years. They were reported normal, underweight, overweight and obese as 176 (60.7%), 79 (27.2%), 27 (9.3%) and 9 (2.8%) respectively. Nutritional status was significantly related with gender, age and grade of adolescents with p-value <0.05. Response showed that 199 (68.6%) adolescents prefer canteen food during break time, and 66 (22.8%) give preference to homemade lunch. Few of them 25 (8.6%) take fruits in school break time. About (24.8%) took drink with lunch which were juices 30 (10.3%), milk/milk shake 14 (5.9%), carbonated drinks 6 (2.1%), and tea/coffee 13 (4.5%). Consumption of carbohydrates, protein, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products was found as 64 (22.1%), 26 (0.9%), 32 (11%), 4 (1.4%) and 1 (0.3%) respectively in adolescents who brought their lunch from home. Around 49% of students were not satisfied with food provided on their school canteens. Availability of food items on school canteens and overall eating pattern of adolescents is not satisfactory. There is a need of school canteen guidelines/policy and nutritional education to canteen staff and pupils.

Factors contributing to malnutrition among HIV positive children aged between...iosrjce
The objective of the study was to identify factors contributing to malnutrition among HIV positive
children aged between 6 and 60 months. The study utilized a non experimental descriptive design. It was a
hospital based study conducted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital pediatric wards. A total of 30 children and
30 caregivers were recruited through convenience sampling. The children had a confirmed diagnosis of
malnutrition, confirmed HIV positive, aged between 6 and 60 months and had to have a present caregiver
during data collection. There were no dropouts. The main outcome measure were anthropometric measurements
of the children namely; height, weight and mid upper arm circumference and the various stressors contributing
to malnutrition. Twenty-two (73.33%) children were males and 8 (26.66%) were females. Contributing factors
to malnutrition identified were presence other illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, tuberculosis and
kwashiorkor, 19 (63.33%), low socioeconomic status (earned less than USD$100 dollars per month), 16
(53.33%), coming from a family with more than 5 dependants 11 (36.67%), not being on ART 15 (50%), and
birth weight below or equal to 2500g 6 (20%). The major contributing factors to malnutrition were
extrapersonal stressors (54.83) interpersonal stressors (30.28%) and intrapersonal stressors (29.76%).
The purpose of this research was to investigate the students' attitude and consciousness degree regarding the pregnancy health in 2013 in Eastern-Azerbaijan Province. So, 300 students in different semesters have been taken up as accidentally from Tabriz, Marand, Bonab, Maragheh and Ahar have been taken up in this study. The WHO illustrative questionnaire for interview-questionnaire designed by John Cleland surveys with young people has been applied in this study. The statistical data has been completed by the help of SPSS software and descriptive and t-test statistical cases. The results showed the attitude score from the family adjustment is significantly higher than the determined degree positively. The results showed the sexual diseases are significantly higher than the fixed determined degree positively. Also it showed there is no observed any significant difference between the degree of the conscious and the students' attitude based on their marital status The results did not show any significant difference regarding the degree of the attitude among students.

ABSTRACT- Background: Malnutrition constitutes a major public health concern worldwide and serves as an indicator
of hospitalized patient’s prognosis. Nutritional support is an essential aspect of the clinical management of children
admitted to hospital. Malnutrition has been long associated with poor quality, poor diet and inadequate access to health
care, and it remains a key global health issue that both stems from and contributes to weakness, with 50% of childhood
deaths due to principal under nutrition.
Methods: The present hospital based cross sectional study was conducted in April to Dec 2015 among 300 rural
adolescents of 9-18 years age (146 boys and 154 girls) attending the outpatient department at Patna Medical College and
Hospital, Bihar, India, belonging to the all caste communities. The nutritional status was assessed in terms of under
nutrition (weight-for-age below 3rd percentile), stunting (Height-for-age below 3rd percentile) and thinness (BMI-for-age
below 5th percentile). Diseases were accepted as such as diagnosed by pediatrician, skin specialist and medical officer.
Results: The prevalence of underweight, stunting and thinness were found to be 31%, 22.3% and 30.7% respectively. The
maximum prevalence of malnutrition was observed among early adolescents (23% - 54%) and the most common
morbidities were diarrhoea (16.7%), carbuncle / furuncle (16.7%) and scabies (12%).
Conclusion: Malnutrition among hospitalized under five children and around suffers moderately high rates of
malnutrition. Present nutrition programs attention on education for at risk children and referral to regional hospitals for
malnourished children. Screening tools to classify children at risk of developing malnutrition might be helpful.

Abstract—Obesity is the major global nutrition concern. Modernisation and urbanisation have led to changes in dietary and lifestyle factors which are contributing to the increased prevalence of overweight and obesity.
Objective: To find out various life style risk factors for obesity among school children of affluent families aged 10-18 years in Jaipur city.
Methods: A cross-sectional study in ten randomly selected schools of Jaipur city with tuition fee > 18000 ₹/year was conducted from July 2012 to April 2013. 1610 students of class V to XII were included and their detailed life style history with anthropometric measurements was recorded after their informed written consent. Indian Academy of Pediatrics' growth Monitoring Guidelines for children from birth to 18 years was followed for defining and classifying obesity.
Result: 364 (22.61%) participants were found obese/overweight. Watching television during meals, frequency of main meals outside home per month, frequency of snacks outside home per week and duration of television/ computer watching per day were found significant predictors of overweight/ obesity on binary multivariate logistic regression method.
Conclusion: The present study highlights childhood overweight/obesity is an emerging health problem (22.61%) and lifestyle factors are important risk for it.

Background UP, India’s most popular state recorded the most diarrhoeal deaths. 22.21 deaths nationwide over five year to 2017. Method A quantitative evaluative approach using questionnaire on diarrhoea. Pre experimental one group pre test and post test design was used. Convenient sampling technique was used to select 30 samples from the selected Anganwadi in Lucknow. Initially researcher got permission for study from concern authorities. Pre test done followed by structured teaching program on prevention and home management of diarrhoea for 50 min followed by 10 min session of question and answer. A post test was conducted after 2 weeks of structured teaching program. The tools used for data collection, part 1 demographic variables, part 2 assessing knowledge on home management of diarrhoea. Results the pre test mean value of knowledge 23±1.9 was lesser than post test mean value 23.62±1.75. The effectiveness of STP, the obtained, “t- test value is 9.469. which is found to be greater than the, “t- table value p=0.000 0.01 level at 29df. Since the obtained t value is significant at p 0.01 level, therefore research hypotheses H1 is accepted. It is inferred that, there is significant difference between pre test and post test knowledge regarding diarrhoea among mothers of under five year children. Conclusion The study concludes that the structured teaching program was very effective in providing knowledge prevention and home management of diarrhoea among mothers. The school age period is nutritionally
significant because this is the prime time to build up body
stores of nutrients in preparation for rapid growth of
adolescence.1 Malnutrition remains the world’s most
serious health problem and the single biggest contributor to
child mortality, nearly one third of the children in the
developing world are either underweight or stunted and
more than 30% of the developing world’s population suffer
from micronutrient deficiencies. However the data available
from urban slums of Hyderabad in this age group is very
sparse and hence an attempt has been made to study the
same.

Effect of Nutrition Education on Anemic Rural Adolescent Girls in OdishaYogeshIJTSRD
Adolescence is considered as the nutritionally vulnerable period due to an increased demand for nutrients due to growth spurt. It has a far reaching implication on their reproductive health in their later years. In Odisha, the prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls in general, has not been well documented. Hence, the present study investigated the prevalence of anemia and effect of nutrition education on anemic adolescent girls in a selected population of Odisha. Adolescent girls 12 17 years who were studying in schools and colleges and residing in the study area for a minimum of six months were included in this study. Total numbers of 508 adolescent girls 12 17years were screened for anemia. Considering its association with the lack of right knowledge, attitude, and practice KAP , it could be preventable. The objectives of the study were 1 to assess the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice KAP of the adolescent girls about Anemia, 2 To determine the association between the selected demographic variables and the level of KAP among the adolescent girls, 3 to analyse the effectiveness of the planned nutrition education of Anemia programme on knowledge, attitude and practice. Impact of Health Education on Preventive Practices of A.R.I among Mothers Liv...iosrjce
Acute respiratory tract infections in young children take a heavy toll on life among urban slum
dwellers and where medical care is not available or sought. The effective way to reduce deaths from ARI is
early and prompts treatment as well as health education. The urban slum population is more vulnerable to
health risk as they face many risk factors like living condition, sanitation, health care facilities. In this pre
experimental study, the variables were assessed through pre and post test followed by educational intervention
for 476 mothers of under five children residing in urban slums of Bangalore District. The data regarding socio
demographic variables of mothers and knowledge of mothers on preventive practices of acute respiratory tract
infections was collected through structured interview schedule. The major study findings indicate that there is
significant difference between the knowledge of practice scores of mothers between pre and post test. The
results also indicates that there is significant relationship between knowledge scores of mothers with their socio
demographic variables and community based health education could enhance the knowledge of mothers
regarding preventive practices of acute respiratory tract infections in their young children.

Nutritional Status of School Age Children in Private Elementary Schools: Basi...IJAEMSJORNAL
Department of Education (DepEd) organizes nutritional programs to improve the health status of children in public schools. Likewise, the researcher believes that health awareness must be raised in private schools as well. This study aimed to affect the community to be aware and more knowledgeable about nutrition. Specifically, this study focused on the nutritional status of school age children in private elementary schools in Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija. It sought to determine the profile of the learners, anthropometrics, clinical data and the knowledge of the learners as to dietary and the significant relationship between the profile of the learners and the nutritional status of the school aged children. With all the data gathered a meal management program was proposed. The study employed the quantitative description design. The study manifests that majority of the respondents were not yet aware of what they eat. In addition, age, greatly affects the respondent’s anthropometrics as to height. More so, age, number of siblings and family income, greatly affect the respondents’ anthropometrics as to weight. The researcher adopted the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipino program that was developed by the DOST- FNRI.
Significance of Health Education among Adolescent GirlsQUESTJOURNAL
ABSTRACT: Adolescence is the period of storm and stress due to rapid changes in various aspects of growth. It is the most challenging phase of development especially in the physiological aspect. Awareness on growth and development among adolescent girls is essential to build a healthy personality. It helps to prevent them from unhealthy lifestyles and teenage pregnancy. The present study focuses on analyzing the level of awareness among adolescent girls about the major physical changes like menstruation and reproduction. The sample consists of 100 adolescent girls from government and aided schools of Kerala. The study found that the awareness related to menstruation is satisfactory. But the awareness related to sex is at below average level. Thus the study highlights the need of health education among adolescents with more focus on sex education.

Abstract—Adolescents are the future resources for any country to progress and prosper. According to Census 2001, in India, adolescent constitute one-fifth of the total population. Adolescent AGs are one of the important segments of the population for they are the future mother whose nutritional status affects that of the newborn baby. Anemia being a major public health problem among adolescent girls, a study was conducted with the objective to determine the socio-demographic correlates of anemia among girls. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 467 adolescent AGs in Ahmadabad city during May 2011 to august 2012 in Adolescent Friendly Health Services clinics. Results: Prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls was 85.9%. Highest prevalence was observed during mid-adolescence phase. As the age of girls increases, Hemoglobin tends to get on the lower side. A statistically significant association was observed between anemia and nutritional status. No association was observed between anemia and religion, birth order, type of -family, education of parents and occupation of parents. Conclusion: Association between anemia and under-nutrition has been reported earlier in numerous studies; however present study highlights the fact that it is not common to have anemia among girls who are over nourished or obese. Hence, special efforts should be made to address this issue among girls by doing dietary modifications.
Effect of Mothers Working and Non Working Status on the Nutritional Status of...YogeshIJTSRD
Health and nutritional status are two crucial and interlinked aspects of human development, which in to interact with demographic variables Malnutrition a condition that occurs due to intake of inadequate amount of nutrients leading to insufficient nourishment continues to be a problem of considerable magnitude in most of the developing countries in the world. Preschool children are one of the most nutritionally vulnerable segments of the population. Nutrition during the first 5 years has not only an impact on growth and morbidity during childhood, but also acts as a determinant of nutritional status in adolescent and adult life. Global comparative data indicate that contrary to common perception, prevalence of under nutrition is highest in South Asian children. India has the highest occurrence of childhood malnutrition in the world. Malnutrition is responsible for 55 percent of all deaths of children younger than 5 years of age globally. Malnutrition makes a child susceptible to infections and delayed recovery, thus increasing mortality and morbidity. It is therefore logical to direct attention to the quality of life of the survivors Bose and Das, 2010 . A Study on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice KAP on Anemia and Socio Economic ...YogeshIJTSRD
Anemia is a critical public health problem in India that affects women and children throughout the lifecycle. The Govt. of India took an effort by launching the programme called “12 by 12 initiatives- addressing the problem of anemia in adolescents. Under Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Adolescent Girls SABALA programme initiated in 2011, adolescent girls are being received weekly supplementation of iron folic acid tablets and biannual de worming tablets. Age at menarche, family type, mother’s educational status, personal hygiene and sanitation facilities and the gain score of knowledge, attitude and practice. There is a significant difference between the family income and the gain score of the knowledge, attitude and practice of anemia at the 0.05 level of significance. Thus, it is concluded that the demographic variables would have influence over the knowledge, attitude, and practice on anemia. Dr. Sandhya Rani Mohanty "A Study on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) on Anemia and Socio Economic Characteristics of Rural Adolescent Girls in Odisha" Published in International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development (ijtsrd), ISSN: 2456-6470, Volume-5 | Issue-5 , August 2021, URL: https://www.ijtsrd.com/papers/ijtsrd45033.pdf Paper URL: https://www.ijtsrd.com/home-science/food-and-nutrition/45033/a-study-on-knowledge-attitude-and-practice-kap-on-anemia-and-socio-economic-characteristics-of-rural-adolescent-girls-in-odisha/dr-sandhya-rani-mohanty
The main purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of regular home visits on the developmental indices of low birth weight infants. The present study was an on-site clinical investigation. 90 infants ranging between 1500 to 2500g born in Razi Hospital of Marand town having the entrance criteria to the present study were taken into consideration through the available sampling method and then they were divided into two intervention and control groups. The intervention group has received the whole routine cares since the first to fourth week and then they were visited at home for 45 minutes a week. The control group received the routine cares. The evolutionary indices of both groups were also completed monthly for three months by referring homes. The related data gathering tool was also subjected to the demographic information through registration list and the Persian version of the Low Weight Infant Inventory (LWII) (2 months) that have been completed by the researcher on the birthday, first, second and third months of the birth through the interview. SPSS-15 software and the application of the inferential and descriptive statistical tests (K2 and T-tests) were also applied in order to analyze the related data in this study. The significance level was considered as p<0.05.
More than half of these related research units of both groups had experience (61.5%) and control (55.8%) regarding all women in this study; the mean score of the low weight infants on the first month had not shown any statistical significant difference; but on the second months (p=0.04) and the third months (p=0.001), they had shown statistical significant difference progressively. The healthcare based on home-visit had influence on the recovery indices of the low weight infants. Hence, nurses and other health monitors of the infants should apply for the healthcare programs based on home-visit particularly in caring infants.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Abstract:
Research Question: What is the morbidity profile in primary school children and is there any relation of their
illness with socioeconomic determinants.
Methodology: A cross sectional study carried out in six randomly selected Municipal Corporation Primary
schools in Visakhapatnam city. Study population were children aged 6-11 years enrolled in class 2 to class 5. A
sample of 1029 children who attended the school on the day of study were included. Study tools include
questionnaire for obtaining information on socio-demographic data, education and income of their parents, h/o of
episodes of illness and anthropometric parameters. Data was analysed using SPSS.
Results: A total number of 901 out of 1029 children (87.56%) had one or more illness. The most prevalent
conditions were anaemia (50.15 %) followed by worm infestation and dental caries ( 37.12 % and 29.54%)
respectively. About one third were underweight ( 33.3%). Conditions such as underweight, anemia and worm
infestation had significant relation with socio economic status. Morbidity was significantly high among children of
illiterate mothers.
Conclusion: The overall proportion of children suffering from various illnesses is high especially in lower
socioeconomic strata. Improvement of living conditions and providing adequate facilities in school, regular health
check up including health education will address some of the issues.

I. Introduction
Twenty eight percent of the population in India comprises of children aged 0-14 years. The 6-11 yrs
age group ie the primary school children constitute a large part of it. As they begin attending to school, they get
exposed to several risk factors, which may in turn have effect on their health and nutritional status. These
children, especially those residing in urban slums, are more vulnerable because of overcrowding, inadequate
ventilation, lack of sanitation, etc. While the health problems of school children may vary from one place to
another, surveys carried out in India indicate that the main emphasis will fall on 1.Malnutrition 2.Infectious
diseases 3.Intestinal parasites 4.Diseases of skin eye and ear 5.Dental caries. [1]
Inspite of several initiatives, these primary school children have not received as much attention from
health providers and planners as compared to infants and under fives through various National health
programmes [e g: ICDS, RCH programmes].[2] There is a dearth of information on the health status of primary
school age children from developing countries, particularly at the community level [3,4]. Hence an attempt was
made to study the morbidity profile of children [6-11 years] attending Municipal Corporation primary schools in
Visakhapatnam city, Andhra Pradesh state and its relation to factors such as socio economic status and
education of the parents.
II. Methodology
This is a cross sectional study carried out from 1.6.2012 to 1.9.2012. [3 months] This study was
conducted with a sample frame consisting of six randomly selected Municipal Corporation Primary schools in
Visakhapatnam city, Andhra Pradesh. One thousand and twenty nine children aged 6-11 years, from those
enrolled in class 2 to class 5 in these primary schools and attended the school on the day of study were included.
Handicapped children [e.g. Poliomyelitis] and children with serious systemic diseases [e.g. congenital heart
diseases etc.] were not included in the study. Study tools include questionnaire for obtaining information on
socio-demographic data, education and income of their parents, h/o of episodes of illness and anthropometric
parameters. Data regarding the date of birth of the child, education, h/o of parents’ literacy status and income
was obtained from the school records. Educational and Economic status was categorized using the Modified
Kuppu Swamy classification for urban families. Examination was done under natural illumination for any

specific signs. Each child was weighed using the electronic weighing scale to the nearest 0.5 kilograms and the
height was measured to the nearest 0.1 centimetre with a tape that was attached to the wall. Anemia was
diagnosed by palpebral conjunctiva and palmar pallor and was confirmed by hemoglobin estimation by Sahli-
Hellige acid hematin method. Hemoglobin less than 11gms/dl was taken as the cut-off point for the diagnosis of
anaemia. Statistical analysis : Data was organised and analysed using SPSS package.
III. Results
The number of children enrolled in this study were 1029. Among these, there were 562 boys (54.62%)
and 467 girls (45.38%). There were 47 children from the lower socioeconomic strata (4.56%), 665 children
(64.62%) from the upper lower and 317 children (30.8%) from lower middle strata.
Table 1 shows that a total number of 901 children (87.56%) had one or more illness in the present
study. The most prevalent condition were anaemia (50.15 %) followed by worm infestation and dental caries (
37.12 % and 29.54%) respectively. About one third of the study population were underweight ( 33.3%).
Prevalence of other conditions such as Vitamin A deficiency was found to be 6.22%, Vitamin B deficiency as
8.87%, Skin infection including pyoderma, Scabies, Tinea 13.41%, eye infection 1.94%, ear infection 2.62%,
respiratory infection 16.81% and that of dental caries was 29.54%. Table 2 shows that 90 % children whose
mothers were illiterates were having some illness as compared to 67 % of those whose mothers were educated
beyond high school.
In the present study the prevalence of malnutrition is 33.53% (345 out of 1029). 315 (30.61%) of
children were under weight and 30 (2.91%) were severely under weight. In lower socioeconomic strata, 51.06%
of children were under weight and 17.02% were severely under weight. In upper lower socioeconomic strata,
36.54% of children were under weight and only 3.31% children were severely under weight. In lower middle
socioeconomic strata only 15.14% of children were under weight and no child is severely under weight. This
difference in prevalence of malnutrition in different socioeconomic strata is statistically significant (P<0.001).
Prevalence of anemia was found to be 50.15%. It is found that similar percentages of both boys and
girls were suffering from anemia ( 47% and 53%) respectively. Table no 4 shows that majority ( 68%) of the
students having anemia were from lower socio economic group where as it was 51.13% and 45.43% in
children from upper lower and lower middle strata. This difference between socioeconomic status and
anemia was found to be statistically significant (P<0.02).
Worm infestation and Dental caries were another two important morbid conditions found among the
primary school children in this study. The prevalence of worm infestations was present in 57.45% of children
belonging to lower socioeconomic status ( Table no 5) and 34.07 of children belonging to lower middle
socioeconomic status. This difference in prevalence of worm infestation in different socio economic strata is
statistically significant (P<0.01). Also significant association is found between H/o worm infestation and
anaemia, as table no 6 shows that 78.8% of those having worm infestation were anaemic.
IV. Discussion
A total number of 901 children (87.56%) had one or more illness in the present study. This is little
more than that reported by Saluja et al (67.8 %) and Deb et al (70%) [5,6]. However the spectrum of morbidity
seen in this cross sectional study was almost similar to that reported in other studies [3,5,6,7]
In present study, morbidity is found to be significantly higher among children from lower
socioeconomic status. Also a significant relation has been found between mothers’ literacy status and
morbidity among the children. Children of illiterate mothers were having increased morbidity as compared to
those of educated mothers. This difference in morbidity status of children in relation with mother’s literacy
status is statistically significant (P<0.001). Gender wise distribution shows that morbidity among boys is higher
as compared to girls . This finding is similar to that reported by Mhaske et al [7].
In the present study prevalence of malnutrition (underweight) is 33.53% of which 30.61% were
under weight and 2.91% were severely under weight which means the rest one third of the students were
normally nourished. This is similar to study by Deb et al in South Kolkata who reported that 54% of boys and
74% girls were normally nourished[6]. However study by Saluja et al has reported very high morbidity related
to nutritional deficiency (93.4% ) and malnutrition ( 73%) [5]. When analysed in relation with socioeconomic
determinant in the present study, it shows that’s about half (51.06%) of the children belonging to lower socio
economic group were underweight and 17.02% were severely under weight. There was a significant difference
in the weight of the children belonging to different socio economic strata. Children from lower middle and
upper lower socioeconomic strata were better in their weights as compared to other.
Anemia was found to be most common morbidity among the primary school children (50.15%). It is
observed that not only girls but also boys were having low haemoglobin status which is almost 50% in each
group, and this needs to be addressed with early intervention. Similar finding is also reported by Deb et al, but
a study by Das et al in north Kolkata has reported prevalence of anaemia as 22%. Anemia in the lower

socioeconomic strata was significantly higher that other classes. Although anemia may be due to various factors,
one common contributing factor is worm infestation, which is again one of the common illnesses among
children. In this study, the prevalence of worm infestation was found to be 37.12% which is similar to that
reported by Das et al as 39.4% [8] .
Oral health and hygiene is very important particularly in this age as it may affect the nutritional status
as well as cognitive development of the child. Prevalence of Dental caries in the study population was found to
be 29.54% and was almost same in both boys and girls. This was at par with 27.9% and 29.9% as reported by
Anantha Krishnan et al and Das et al respectively [3,8]. Mhaske et al reported higher percentage of children
with dental caries (65.1%) [7]. Spectrum of conditions included under disease of Oral cavity were as high as
92.3% as reported by Saluja et al [5]. This suggests an urgent need to educate the parents about improving oral
health among their children.
Prevalence of respiratory conditions, which included upper respiratory tract infections, Bronchial
asthma and epistaxis, was found to be 16.81% . Results obtained by other studies by Saluja et al ( 23.3%) and
Mhaske et al (38.2%) show slight variation [5,7]. This can be attributed to the poor infrastructure and sanitary
facilities in government schools and increasing number of enrollments leading to over crowded classrooms
without provision for proper cross ventilation. Also malnutrition being an underlying factor , primary school
children are more vulnerable to respiratory infections. Overcrowding may also contribute to increase skin and
eye infections. Skin infections including pyoderma, Scabies and Tinea was found in 13.41% children in this
study similar to findings by Mhaske et al ( 12%) and Anantha Krishnan et al ( 8.7%). However higher degree
of skin infections ( 59%) was reported by Saluja et al in their study. Prevalence of eye infection and ear
infection in the present study was 1.94% and 2.62% which is similar to that reported Anantha Krishnan et al
(2.7% ). [3,5,7]
V. Conclusion
The overall proportion of children suffering from various illnesses is high especially in lower
socioeconomic strata. As majority of them are slum dwellers, improvement of living conditions as well as
providing adequate facilities in school such as, infrastructure, drinking water and sanitation, regular health
check up including health education by strengthening the school health program will address some of the issues.
