MORALITY IN
UMAYYAD &
ABBASID TIME
PERIOD
WHAT IS MORALITY?
 Comes from Latin word moralitas meaning manner, character
 It is the human attempt to define what is right and wrong about our actions and
thoughts, and what is good and bad about our being who we are.
 It carries the concept of:
o Moral standards
o Moral responsibility
o Moral identity
 Common synonyms include ethics, principles, virtue and goodness
MORALITY IN ISLAM
 Islam defines a universal standard by which actions may be suspected
moral or immoral.
 In Quran Allah says:
“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West;
but it is righteousness to believe in God and the Last Day and the
Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance,
out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans for the needy, for the
wayfarer, for those who ask; and for the freeing of captives; to be
steadfast in prayers, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the
contracts which you made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or
suffering) and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are
the people of truth, the God-conscious.”
(Quran, 2:177)
MORALITY IN ISLAM (CONT)
 Holy Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) is the greatest model of setting high
standards of ethics and morality.
 Allah praised him in these words:
“And verily, you O Muhammad are on an exalted character”
(Quran 68:4)
 The Prophet (SAW) used to emphasize how important good manners are for
Muslims
 He (SAW) said:
“The best of you is the best among you in conduct”
(Bukhari)
SOURCES OF MORALITY IN ISLAM
 Revelation
 Human reasoning
 Do not publicize
 Honesty in transaction
UMAYYAD DYNASTY
 First great Muslim dynasty to rule the empire of caliphate(661-750 CE)
 Umayyads, headed by Abu Sufiyan, were a largely merchant family of
the Quraish tribe centered at Mecca
 The first caliph of Umayyad empire was Muawiya – he moved the capital
from Madina to Damascus
 They conquered new lands – empire spanned parts of three continents:
Africa, Asia and Europe in less than 100 years
MORALITY IN UMAYYAD DYNASTY
 In Umayyad Caliphate freedom to practice religion was given to non-
Muslims
 Allowed many of the local government workers to keep their jobs under the
new Umayyad government
 There were six boards at the Centre to assist the Caliph
 One of which was Diwan al-Qudat – the Board of Justice
 A series of judges succeeded one after another under the Umayyad Caliphs,
Hisham and Walid II.
 The Umayyads meddled with the register and the recipients regarded
pensions as the subsistence allowance even without being in active service.
FALL OF UMAYYADS
 During Hisham’s reign, Muslims expanded out of Spain and into
France until their advance was finally stopped by Franks
 When Hisham died, the empire was collapsed by disaffected non-
Arabs and Kharjites.
 It was one such rebellious group, the Abbasids that would finally
overthrow the dynasty
ABBASID DYNASTY
 Abbasid family overthrew Umayyad dynasty in 750 CE
 Abbasid Caliph was third to succeed Prophet(S.A.W)
 Dynasty was named on Muhammad’s youngest uncle, Abbas ibn
Abd al-Muttalib
 Map of the Abbasid Caliphate at its greatest extent,850 CE:
MORALITY IN ABBASID DYNASTY
 Huge focus on legal system to ensure justice
 Sufi missionaries made Islam appealing by assimilating it into
existing religious traditions
 Conversion from other religions was relatively easy and quick
 Women had important status in society
 Women were given freedom to pray, teach, work and fight
 Ulmas and pious men were Caliph’s advisors
FALL OF ABBASID DYNASTY
 In 1055, the Abbasids were overpowered by the Seljuas
 Took what temporal power may have been left to the Caliph but
respected his position
 In 1258, the dynasty fell during a Mongol siege of Baghdad
CONCLUSION
 One of the basic Islamic teachings is Islam
 Muslims should act in accordance with the teachings of Islam
 Muslims should be moral and ethical in their conduct.
