How do you transform a team who are struggling to keep up with the demands of providing a busy and demanding service? How do you address problems like high sickness rates and low morale? This session will describe the transformation of a team who found themselves under so much pressure that it led to problems with attendance and motivation. Working with colleagues from inside and outside the institution who provided expertise, support and coping mechanisms, the team’s managers worked with the team themselves to turn things around, and are now functioning as a truly collaborative, happy and effective group. The session will describe the techniques and strategies that were used to deliver this change, and how the team themselves contributed not only to the transformation, but to identifying how they had achieved it, and what they were doing differently in order to be successful and enjoy their jobs.

Lumen Learning’s David Wiley speaks about Waymaker, our next-generation courseware that combines open educational resources (OER) with person-centered learning tools and strategies. Rather than relying on a system to make decisions on the learner’s behalf, Waymaker provides visibility into the learning process and asks students to make their own choices as they learn how to learn better. Waymaker also creates efficiencies for instructors to help them identify and reach out to students who need their help and encouragement. Economics professor Steven Greenlaw shares his experience teaching with the courseware during the current pilot.
How to engage students as individuals as they experience a personal intellectual journey, while systematically understanding and enhancing the quality of the learning environment at the level of the course, faculty and whole institution.

The learning pathway is a navigational element in Blackboard courses at the University of Queensland and a visual representation of what students need to know and need to do each week to stay on track. A JavaScript visualises course materials and activities in form of a clickable pathway that easily guides users to relevant course content to help learners can _see_a pathway for achieving the learning objectives. Since the first iteration of the Learning Pathway in 2012 the system has been successfully embraced by a variety of small and large classes (1200+ students) at different levels across faculties and institutions. The presentation will introduce an updated version and showcase pathway examples from a range of different disciplines and report on usage and how students interacted with the pathway and learning resources. We will provide an outlook to the next stage of the project which aims to provide students with individually tailored maps for planning and tracking learning trajectories. These maps, embedded within Blackboard courses, will make engagement visible to academics and learning visible to students, including factual knowledge and conceptual understandings, metacognitive and problem solving abilities, as well as professional and behavioural skills.

Learner centered teaching n flipped classroom- paper presented at mct on 7th ...DrAnsari MQ
‘Guide more, teach less.’ ‘From sage on the stage to guide on the side.’ ‘I do, I learn.’ These quotes clearly indicate that the role of teacher has gone a sea change from sage on the stage to guide on the side of the students. For well over a decade, the focus of the classroom has steadily shifted from a teaching-centric approach to a learning-centric approach (Barr & Tagg, 1995). This approach warrants for a rethinking of the traditional way of teaching still prevalent in our institutions. Active learning is anything that students do in a classroom other than merely passively listening to the lecture. All genuine learning is active, not passive. It involves the use of mind, not just the memory. A paradigm shift is occurring in teaching-learning activities and the world has moved ahead but our educational institutions still caught in a web of old, traditional methods originated a century ago. It is time for teachers and administrators to think, analyze and steer ahead with the integration of the approaches blended with the tools of technology leading to better learning of our students. Today’s gathering is a step in this direction.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

'Mooting Moodle' A panacea for blended learning, or a problematic proposal?
1. Presentation Name December 05 “Mooting MoodleA panacea for blended learning, or a problematic proposal?” Clare Denholm Debbie Reynolds
2. Drivers for change Issues and challenges Lack of student engagement observed (large cohort & inherent problems / continuity etc.) Lectures and seminars not linking well Students failing / Academics failing students ? Institutional drive towards embracing technology Presentation Name December 05
3. Drivers for changeDeveloping the use of Moodle Envisaged Opportunities Enhance student engagement & use Moodle tools to closely monitor student understanding and progress Provide opportunity to “respond” quickly where students require further support Exploit the dynamic and responsive nature of the Moodle environment and its functions Opportunity to meet perceptions that students enter HE “techno savvy mode” and ready to “learn on line” Develop understanding and inform best practice in teaching Presentation Name December 05

10. What we have learned Student Perspectives They did engage – 54,000 hits from 500 students The feedback and experience was varied but overall positive They like the flexibility of online learning and generally it helps them feel engaged Particularly like the powerpoints & quizzes *Good contact with tutors*
11. Student Quotes What do you like about the unit? “the combination of online study and seminar is excellent. I can have a basic knowledge through online study first because i attend the workshop. The advantage is that I can do my online study whenever I want, rather than doing it together in the class. This measure gives me more flexibility in time management. I support this arrangement.” What are you finding challenging? “Keeping up with what to do prior to each lecture, can at times feel slightly overwhelming, although the work is not hard nor is it lengthy, it just feels like there are lots of tiny deadlines for work,(rather than one large piece of work) although I do see the bigger picture.” How do you think this unit could be improved? “lessons should be about the powerpoint on mycourse. our lessons are often nothing to do with what is on mycourse.” “more quizs and assessments in the virtual learning tasks for the students to prove and apply what they learn in the virtual learning tasks.” Presentation Name December 05
12. Presentation Name December 05 What we have learned Lecturer Perceptions and ChallengesDeveloping academic engagement “why do we have to keep changing everything every year, we are doing ok aren’t we?” “they [students] won’t do the on line stuff before coming to my workshop so what can I do!!?” “only half of them [students] have ever watched the on line lectures, or done the quizzes so I do it in the lesson with them”
14. Presentation Name December 05 Developing and supporting academics on the journey Traditional preferences (tricky) Developing competency Building technical confidence Implementing policies and management structures to support development of staff competency

Support students in learning online“I feel this unit is taught in a way whicj makes me want to learn and listen, there is plently of interaction and communication in class, therefore I have no suggestions as to how this unit could be improved.”“Gavin is a superb tutor! Very helpful, well organised and very approachable. Also like how the seminars are open to discussion, rather than just hearing the tutor talk the whole time. This makes me remember the sessions more and have a better knowledge of researching on a whole”
