Mike Korb, PA DEP, “Mine Reclamation and Monarch Butterfly Habitat”Michael Hewitt, GISP
Monarchs need milkweed as a breeding habitat. Loss of meadow and farm milkweed stands in eastern and Midwestern US due to no till farming, herbicides, “getting rid of weeds”, and genetically modified corn has caused a major decline in Monarch Butterflies. We have started what may become a major initiative to utilize mineland reclamation as replacements for some of these habitats, and this presentation will discuss this effort.
Forest Farming: Seeing the Forest for More Than Just the Trees - Presented by...DiegoFooter
For most of human existence, our sustenance has come from the forest. Trees and forest crops offer a range of incredible plants and fungi that can be called food-medicines, as they both nourish and restore us.
This session offers a conversation about the ways we can both conserve the ,forest while increasing the pallate of useful yields from them. To to this, a farmer must take advantage of the many microclimates and functions trees offer and also possess the long-haul vision of managing a system that develops over lifetimes rather than a single season. Learn from the stories of active forest farmers growing mushrooms, elderberry, paw paw, tree syrups, and integrating animals into their woods, and discuss the ways you can integrate more of your growing within the trees.

Monarch Conservation-Increase Population Chuck Melvin
Butterfly Conservation, The Monarch butterfly population is declining due to decreasing habitat in Mexico and the USA. You can help the Monarch planting milkweed in yards, gardens and open areas in the Monarch migration paths. There are vacant lands where seeds of milkweeds and wild flowers can be planted, this includes roadsides and power line right-of-ways. This year the monarch started their migration north, but the climate prevented milkweed plants from maturing enough to provide leaves for female butterflies to lay eggs and to feed the newly hatched caterpillars. Starting milkweed plants inside, then replanting them outside for the migrating butterflies to use will help sustain the Monarch butterfly population. Harvesting Milkweed seeds in the fall will provide seeds to plant in the spring. Your area may have seen a decline in Monarch butterflies. Monarch eggs, caterpillars and chrysalises can be purchased online or from local butterfly farms.

Southern SAWG - Farming for Beneficial Insects (Pollinators, Predators, and P...Nancy Adamson
Farming for Beneficial Insects (Pollinators, Predators, and Parasitoids), presented at the 2014 Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group conference in Mobile, AL, January 17 & 18, 2014. Pollinators (especially native bees) and other beneficial insects (that help control crop pests) are crucial to ensure healthy crop harvests. This session will help you understand habitat needs of pollinators, predators and parasitoids common in our region and ways you can support their conservation with habitat and farm management. Also learn where to access resources for bee and other insect identification, plant selection, and successful habitat establishment. A habitat assessment guide to evaluate your farm habitat and other resources are available from the Xerces Society at http://www.xerces.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/PollinatorHabitatAssessment.pdf . Improving the viability of probiotics by encapsulation methods for developmen...Open Access Research Paper
The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.
