• Mollusca is the second largest phylum of the invertebrate animals
• Molluscs have a soft unsegmented body and most kinds have an external calcareous shell.
• Marine molluscs occur in diverse habitats: rocky coasts, sandy beaches, coral reef ecosystems, eustaries and
also at abyssal depths in the sea. However, in terms of molluscan species diversity and abundance, rocky
intertidal zones and coral reef areas of India are rich.
• Molluscan fisheries have came up as important fisheries to earn from the seas, its commercial importance has
induced involvement of many people of the coastal areas to earn livelihood from the sources of seas.
