Module 05 – A Universe of Galaxies Edwin Hubble’s observations of the Andromeda “nebula” in 1924, using the then new 100 inch telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory, lead to the understanding that the Milky Way was not the only galaxy, but one of a countless large groups of stars in our Universe. Within this new field of astronomy, Hubble devised a classification system for galaxies based on their observed shape and structure. In this laboratory exercise, you will use Stellarium to observe a number of galaxies and attempt to classify them using Hubble’s system. Background Question – Describe the major Hubble galaxy classifications and how they are organized on Hubble’s “turning fork”. Object: Explain the purpose of this laboratory assignment in your own words. What do you think you will accomplish or learn from this exercise? Hypothesis: Write a simple hypothesis connected to observed properties of galaxies that you will be able to test using the Stellarium software (for example, most galaxies are spiral in shape like our Milky Way). Procedure 1) Open the Stellarium software. Open the Sky and Viewing options window (F4). Motions in the Nighttime Sky and the Celestial Sphere Background Throughout time, humans have created models of the nighttime sky to help them predict the motions within the nighttime sky as well as the Sun throughout the year. One of the earliest models, which is still used today, is the celestial sphere. A larger model is a (physical) planetarium where the nighttime sky is illuminated over your head. While these models are very helpful, they are not easy to transport. Thus various types of star maps and planispheres have also been used over the ages. Now with technology, "planetarium software," apps, and web pages can be used, such as Stellarium, Google Sky, and World Wide Telescope. Like all models, these are not perfect. Rather, they are intended to help us visualize what is happening, and perhaps help us understand how or why. In this lab, we will be exploring at least one of these models. Instructions You will need to read this lab completely. You will be presented with questions of various types that you will need to answer on the lab report that you will upload to eCampus once complete. The student should expect this lab to take 3 hours to complete. Section I : Motions in the Night Sky In this section of the lab, you will be asked to go outside for observations of the nighttime sky. You will need scratch paper to help you with your observations. (Scratch paper will always be for the benefit of the student and will not be turned-in.) As always, you will want to read all directions carefully before proceeding. While the observations can be made from anywhere at any time during nighttime, it is recommended that you choose a location that you are familiar with, and that has at least one direction where you can see down to the horizon without barriers such as buildings, mountains, et cetera. Wait at least 45 minutes after sundown to make your first observation. Then wait at least 1 hour after your first observation (and at least 1 hour before sunrise) to make your second observation. Your observations will need to take place on the same night. You will need to be sure you know with certainty the cardinal directions (north, east, south, west) from your observation location. You may find a smartphone or tablet app (like Google Sky or SkEye) helpful but not necessary. Your observations may each require up to 30 minutes for your eyes to become (mostly) dark-adjusted plus another 10 to 20 minutes to get set-up and record your observation. Part A : Observations Observation 1 : You will need to make sure your viewing location is dark. Try to find a location with minimal lights (like the lights found in lit parking lots, along streets, or building lights). You will also need to view on a night mostly free from clouds. While the U.S. looked great from an outside perspective, with its rich flaunting their wealth and industry booming, it was riddled with exploitation of the people and political corruption, thus earning the name the Gilded Age. This brought in a sense of moral obligation and led to a reform movement that swept across the nation, with organization developing locally and nationally. This period of reform is known as the Progressive Era. It was a time to expose the underlining errors of the U.S. society and to make changes for the good of the people. The Progressive Era would address a variety of issues, including factory and living conditions, agriculture reform, child labor, women’s rights, political reform, conservation, and other social concerns. While not perfect in its initial steps of change, this period will pave the way for continued social justice in our nation’s history. Objectives: Discuss the impact of political corruption on the U.S. government and evaluate the effectiveness of political reform. Identify the leading reformers of the Progressive Era and evaluate the effectiveness of the reform movements. Describe the problems facing farmers in the late 19th century and evaluate the effectiveness of the reform movement by the Populists and other farmers’ organizations and alliances. Compare the Progressivism domestic and foreign policies of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and William Howard Taft. Unit 4 Imperialism and WWI In Unit 4, we will focus on the role of the United States in World affairs. In the late 19th century, the United States not only sought to redefine itself as American, but also to establish its place in the global political arena. Foreign policies paralleled those of many European nations, with a focus on imperialism and preserving foreign interests and markets, specifically in the Western hemisphere. It will be the United States positioning in the Spanish-American war that marks the beginning of its imperial power, with future expansions and political involvement in Latin America and the Pacific Ocean. At the turn of the century, the United States will feel the long-term effect of its imperialistic decisions. Being recognized as a World leader, involvement in international affairs now spanned beyond the Western Hemispher.

1. Module 05 – A Universe of Galaxies Edwin Hubble’s observations of the Andromeda “nebula” in 1924, using the then new 100 inch telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory, lead to the understanding that the Milky Way was not the only galaxy, but one of a countless large groups of stars in our Universe. Within this new field of astronomy, Hubble devised a classification system for galaxies based on their observed shape and structure. In this laboratory exercise, you will use Stellarium to observe a number of galaxies and attempt to classify them using Hubble’s system. Background Question – Describe the major Hubble galaxy classifications and how they are organized on Hubble’s “turning fork”. Object: Explain the purpose of this laboratory assignment in your own words. What do you think you will accomplish or learn from this exercise? Hypothesis: Write a simple hypothesis connected to observed properties of galaxies that you will be able to test using the Stellarium software (for example, most galaxies are spiral in shape like our Milky Way). Procedure 1) Open the Stellarium software. Open the Sky and Viewing options window (F4). Under the “Sky” tab, uncheck the Atmosphere. 2) Select the Landscape tab and uncheck “Show ground”. 3) Open the Search window (F3) and enter Andromeda Galaxy. The view should shift to center on the Andromeda Galaxy. Scroll your mouse wheel forward to zoom in until you can see the Andromeda Galaxy in detail. 4) Based on the Andromeda Galaxy’s shape and appearance, record on the lab data table which major type of galaxy you think it is (Spiral, Elliptical, Irregular). Make a note if you see any particular interesting features (color, if spiral is there a bar, if a galaxy is interacting with another galaxy)

2. 5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each galaxy listed on the data table. You make need to zoom in or out to see the selected in detail. Q1: From the list of galaxies given, did you find more of classification group then the other? Q2: Did you observe any spiral galaxies with a bar structure? Q3: Where all the elliptical galaxies all the same exact shape? Q3: Did you notice a difference in general color between elliptical and spiral galaxies? Q4: Which classification group showed evidence of ongoing star formation (visible new O and B blue stars)? 6) Continue using Stellarium if you need further information to test your individual hypothesis. If you need further direction, please ask your instructor. Conclusion: In 1-2 paragraphs, explain if your observations and data support or conflict with your hypothesis and if you have met your assignment objective.
