goods.
• It is the cheapest mode of
transportation.
• It is slowest among all the modes
of transportation.

7. Advantages &
Disadvantages
• It promotes international trade.
• It is economical for heavy goods.
It is not suitable for transportation of
perishable goods.
It is adversely affected by weather
condition.
Its response time is high.

8. Truck
• Truck load(TL):-
• TL pricing displays the economics
of scale with respect to the
distance travel.
• Less than truck load(LTL):-
• This operation is priced to
encourage the small shipments.
• LTL operators tend to run hub and
spoke network.

9. Rail
• Rail is suited for bulk shipment of
products for long distance.
• It is relatively faster than road
transport.
• It is cost effective transport.

10. Pipeline
• It is used for transportation of
crud oil, refined petroleum,
natural gas, etc.
• It needs a significant fixed cost
for setting up the pipeline.
• It is not flexible.
• Unable to transport variety of
material.

11. Package
carrier
Package carriers are
transportation companies such as
DHL, FEd-X.
Package carrier uses air, truck, and
rail transport to transport the
goods.
It also provides the value added
services such as track order status.
Shipper can proactively inform the
costumer about there packages.
It is suited for e-Business.

12. Intermodal
• Intermodal transportation is the use of more than one mode of transportation to move the
shipment to its destination.
