Clayton Wilkins Autobiography
When I was a child the atmosphere of baseball was almost intoxicating to me. The scent of freshly
cut grass as it tickles your nose, the sound of the ball whooshing through the air from the mound
to the catchers glove, and the sudden crack of the bat as it knocks the little leather ball hundreds of
feet out into the park. All of my senses are in full joyous glee when I am surrounded by that
environment. Unfortunately, I only got to enjoy this atmosphere from the bleachers. I was born
with many medical issues, one of which being asthma that did not particularly like the freshly cut
grass tickling my nose. I would spend my time in the stands watching my half brothers and cousins
who were much healthier than me live my dream of becoming the next... Show more content on

This happened when my Great Grandmother married a man named, Clayton Thompkins.
Clayton was eighty eight years old, had never married before, and did not have any kids of his
own. My father had left my Mom and I many years before so the relationship seemed to spark
instantly. Clayton took me under his wing and became a father figure that I was not use to
having around in my life. Every Sunday at my grandmother s house, we would waste the day
away with the sounds of our voices. We would discuss about our favorite team the Oakland A s
and how much we despised the New York Yankees. Clayton had kept me happier that I could
ever remember as a child. However, it never slipped his mind that I was upset with all my
sicknesses and that I couldn t actually do any of the things we would talk about. It was then
Clayton would fill my young heart with the ideas of being in sports without being on the field. The
theory arose that, I could become a statistician for baseball since math came so easy to me as a
subject. We would listen to ESPN Radio and he said I could be like our favorite sports radio
analyst, Colin Cowherd. I may even choose to get into writing and become a sports journalist for
a newspaper or magazine or even interview my favorite athletes on Television. These new dreams
that Clayton inspired in me gave me new goals and purpose in

Rhetorical Devices In How I Found Religion
Faith is the belief in a person, thing, or idea without concrete evidence of its certainty. Although
in some arenas, such as science, it is looked down upon, faith is ever presence in people s lives. It
takes faith to belief that a chair will support one s weight. It takes faith to belief that others will
fulfill their promises and responsibilities. John Donne, Robert Fink, and Annie Dillard are three
authors who use faithas a topic for one of their works. The use of rhetorical devices, such as tone
and diction, in John Donne s Meditation 17, Robert Fink s How I Found Religionat a Baseball
Game, and Annie Dillard s An American Childhood contributes to each work s message about faith,
the influence of Godon the outlook of life, and the camaraderie found with others.... Show more

The diction and metaphors used in John Donne s Meditation 17 and Robert Fink s How I Found
Religion at a Baseball Game creates a solemn tone that gives an impression the writer has had a
great deal of experience like a socratic philosopher. In Meditation 17, Donne writes, ... and
therefore never send to know whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee (Donne 24). He never outright
says death or dies in his essay but only uses words like the bell tolls or buried . The words the
bell tolls especially contributes to the solemn tone of his essay. Church bells in antiquity are only
sounded for church services, marriages, and funerals. They are events that all should be aware off.
Donne also uses the relationship between bells and emotions to contribute to the tone. Church bells
used to announce funerals are usually lower pitched and are one note. That sound is relatable to
everyone. Everyone can assume that the bell tolls signifies

The God Of Small Things And Chemmeen
What makes people who they are? From a young age, cultural rules that outline the expectations
of a person in their society are instilled in a person s mind . They are molded by their
fundamental role in their society and continually adhere to that role throughout their lives. They
can t over cross those boundaries. The different roles assigned to a person by society influences
their identity through their life. The characters of The God of small things and Chemmeen are
an example of how breaking these cultural values can go well, as well as disastrously. The
characters Ammu, Velutha, and Karuthamma struggle to follow these societal codes of their
community and this undoubtedly leads to their demise. For my paper, I will display to you how
one s community can influence one s occupation, social graces, relationships, and all in all, their
whole lives. In The God of small things Ammu is from a village called Ayemenem. She is the
daughter of Pappachi and Mammachi and the sister of Chacko. Chacko, being the son of the
family, and the future man of the house was allowed to go far to get an education, while Ammu
was left with her abusive and drunkard father. Her father believed that a college education was an
unnecessary expense for a girl. (Roy). Ammu became desperate to leave the nest so she wanted to
find a husband and get married quickly. She had the thought of using it as an escape from

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bio-Based Polymers
Introduction
Bio based polymers are materials which are produced from renewable resources. The terms bio
based and biodegradable will be used repeatedly in the literature, however there is a key
difference between the two types of materials. Biodegradable are defined as materials whose
physical and chemical attributes will undergo degradation and completely deteriorate when
exposed to microorganisms, aerobic processes, anaerobic processes, or both process simultaneously.
On the other hand, Bio based polymers can be biodegradable like polylactic acid or not degradable
like biopolyhethylene. Comparably many bio based polymers are biodegradable, yet not all
biodegradable polymers are bio based.

known as lactide dimers. The next step is to convert these lactide dimers into higher molecular
weight PLA via ring opening polymerization using a catalysts. Various types of PLA polymers can
be obtained using l lactic or d lactic acid in differing ratios. The final properties of PLA is highly

Analysis Of All Quiet On The Western Front By Eric Remarque
The novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Eric Remarque is a powerful anti war novel.
It is about a young man of nineteen who fights in the German army at the western front. He is
accompanied by his friends and soon realise that war isn t glorious or honourable, and they live in
constant terror. Throughout the novelRemarque describes the physical and psychological horrors
of war as well as how they have become the lost generation and the question of who is the enemy.
He includes many writing techniques to describe each topic, especially the physical horrors of war.
Throughout the novel Remarque explains the physical horrors of war and the effect they have on
soldiers through the use of descriptive language. During the war these men were seen with their
skulls blown open, their two feet cut off, men without mouths, without jaws, without faces (Pg.
91). These injuries are horrific and that no men should ever have to endure. Remarque also uses
descriptive language to describe these horrors. An example of imagery is taking his splinted arm
(pg51); this produces an image of his arm in our heads. Remarque is also very honest in his
writing and gives us in depth accounts of horror throughout. He uses brutal and graphic words as
well. A good example of the use of these types... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

been destroyed long ago (Pg.93) and there life is limited to death (Pg.173). All the beliefs they

Remarque describes that they have lost all their youth in the war Youth is long ago. We are old
folk (Pg.18). He uses short, sharp sentences like Life is short (Pg.94) to make a strong point about
the soldier s lives. Each soldier loses his youth throughout and feels isolated while trying to fight off

Secession 16 By Alfred Roller Essay
Design 1: Secession 16 by Alfred Roller (1902) Heller, S., Ilic, M. (2001). Genius moves: 100
icons of graphic design (First ed., p. 12). Cincinnati, OH: North Light Books. The design is a
poster designed as a part of the 16th exhibition of the Viennese secession (1902). The design is a
poster, laid out in a narrow vertical format. The title text stands at the top with the s glyphs
stretched out to two thirds of the page length, where they draw the eye to an ornate and densely
packed font outlining the names of those exhibiting, the date and presumably the location. The
colours are subtle so as to recede into the background and allow the solid black of the text to stand
out. The pattern in the background consists of three inverted, uneven pentagons; the inverted form
creates an arrow like motion and the implied movement, aids in drawing the eye toward the bottom
of the poster. The process used to create this image is lithography. In lithography, the stone is not
raised as in relief printing, nor incised, as with intaglio. Rather it is formed on the flat plane of the
printing surface. Printing from a flat surface is called planographic printing. (Meggs Purvis (2012))
German printers spearheaded colour lithography, and the French printer Godefroy Engelmann
(1788 1839) patented a process named chromolithographie in 1837. After analysing the colours
contained within the original image, the printer separated them into a series of printing plates and

was full of enchantment, it was decorated with shops and home of Disney princesses, also there
were many interesting rides and foods related to the theme of each Disney characters. Visiting
Disney s Fantasyland zone in Japan gave me the most memorable and happiest moment that
fulfilled my childhood memory and totally made my dream comes true.
It was a chilling cold windy day on Christmas eve. The winter breeze woke me up and reminded
me of an exciting day to come. My family and I walked down the quiet street under the dark blue
sky but my heart was pounding with excitement. We got off at JR Maihama station and took the

The Challenges Of Homer s Journey In The October Sky
The film October Sky is a motion picture consisting of Homer Hickam s journey. His journey is

Homer s journey due to all of the challenges he faced throughout his journey. Homer s journey to

The Impact Of The Easter Rising In Ireland
The Easter Rising is commonly regarded as one of Ireland s most patriotic moments, similar to the
United State s Revolutionary War. This rebellion was the result of decades of nationalism and a
group of independence seeking Irishmen seeing an opportunity with England being tied up in the
First World War. They were not going to let this chance pass, and they orchestrated a very secretive
plan with many different moving parts, relying almost entirely upon receiving weapons from
Germany and catching the English off guard. While some counties played a more active role than
others, each county contributed to the rising in its own unique way. County Wicklow is not known
for its active involvement in the conflict during the rebellion, however there were several people
who had a significant impact on the rising. County Wicklow is located just south of County Dublin.
It has a population just over 60,000, eighty percent of which are Roman Catholic. It earned the
nickname, Garden of Irelandfor its large and beautiful mountain ranges and trails throughout the
mountains. This also offered the county locals an advantage, by being the home of the largest
mountain range in the island, nationalist groups like Sinn Fein are able to go on campouts
throughout the mountain for private discussions, as well as hide smuggled goods and keep
wanted people out of custody. Wicklow also borders St. George s Channel with several port cities
and towns giving easy access to foreign nations. These ports

Ancient Greek Art And Its Impact On Ancient Greece
Ancient Greek art has been one of the most influential art forms in the past centuries. The Keros
sculptures predominantly stand out while referring to the ancient Greek scluptures and art. The
Keros sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created
in a small island called Cycladesin 2600 2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the
Aegean Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of
islands around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos.
The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate
event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found
in their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. It has been noticed, that all
through history, the Keros scultpures have been incrediblly difficult to analyze and interpret due to
lack of background information and it s obvious missing parts. An abudance of myths surround
these sculptures since Ancient Greece is also known for its devotion to Greek mythology. The
significance, use, and meaning of the figures are unclear. There is even debate about whether the
figures were meant to lie flat or to stand against a wall there is no definitive evidence either way.

most, low budget airlines are their first option. Passengers are willing to give up their comfort and
other in flight services such as entertainment and during their journey for low ticket prices.
However, over the past few decades, operating long haul flights was not to the advantage of these
budget airlines. The cost of fuel made it for the most part, took up a huge proportion of the costs
needed to manage/operate these flights.According to The Economist article, Oasis airline went into

How Is Media Inherently Bias
Media is not inherently bias, however different viewpoints, goals and opinions cause media
sources to be biased. Even though the press is supposed to be impartial and provide truthful
information to the people, emotions, and opinions cause journalists to manipulate the content the
press produces. This leads to a multitude of alternate biases. For example, some media sources
are biased in the favor of Republicans and others in the favor of Democrats. Many are also
independent and have a set of views and beliefs all their own. Media biases also vary in intensity.
Some sources may attempt to seem neutral, but possess an underlying biasto a certain side. Others,
on the other hand, may thrive on criticizing and denouncing an opposing side.

It was created to be free of external influence and free to cover all stories possible. Even though
some news is impartial, people have different biases and many media organizations attempt to
appeal to that bias through gatekeeping and agenda setting. This allows people to congregate
with others with the same views and create an atmosphere that ignores people who do not have
the same biases. Consequently, people become polarized and oblivious to the people on the
opposite side of the ideological spectrum. However, simply diversifying the sources of one s
media intake may break through the atmosphere of polarization. If one understands the opposing
side s point of view, then he or she will discover other types of bias and the reasons behind that
bias. In other words, if a person were to watch solely Democratic sources of media, then he or
she will never comprehend the Republican point of view. However, if the person chooses to
watch a variety of news sources, then he or she will learn to appreciate both sides of the political
spectrum. The observer will then understand that the media is geared towards a specific audience
and all have different biases and bias

necessity for capitalist exploitation of lesser developed countries and the causes of war among

In The Cask Of Amontillado, The Raven, And Annabel Lee
The unity of effect is all the elements in a story that channels the effect the author wants the
audience to experience. Therefore, to achieve the unity of effect in the Cask of Amontillado, The
Raven, and Annabel Lee, Poe used the elements of setting, alliteration, and unreliable narrator to
help elicit the unsettling mood in the audience.
For the sake of the unity of effect , Poe uses setting for the purpose of conceiving a sinister mood.
As Montresor and Fortunato walked deeper into the catacombs in the Cask of Amontillado,
Montresor points out the trickling of the water on the bones. We are below the river s bed. The
drops of moisture trickle among the bones. (Cask)The setting is under the surface of the earth, so
the audience associates it with with Hell because of the bones that lie around. The bones also make
the audience feel that the setting is eery and dangerous because it reminds them of death. This only
makes isolation and danger prominent factors in the setting. The mood becomes unpredictable and
treacherous, with a sense of fear and dread knowing that something bad will happen to the
characters who are away from safety. Under those circumstances, Poe controlled the audience s fear
and the diabolical mood using the dark setting.
Once again Poe uses the unity of effect to elicit this tense mood and draw out terror in the audience.
In The Raven, Poe used alliteration with the intention to build a suspenseful mood and dread in the
audience. The narrator of

the opposite of Jane. She acted like AdelГЁ; superficial, and much like a porcelain doll, pretty to
look at but empty inside.
BrontГ« endorsed the view that a woman was not a machine without feelings . A woman in
Victorian society, who was not as brilliant as her jewels , experienced life without one bit of love

women against Victorian society. The Chartist movement of the time was one when middle class
people fought for political representation and the ability to move up the social ladder. This desire
for liberty also impacted on women, due to their status as an oppressed social class.
BrontГ« also seems to believe that women need to do more than custom has pronounced necessary

How Did Peter The Great Modernize Russia

a domestic policy that allowed him to get rid of foreign policies which was helpful when trying to

Swot Analysis Of Delta Air Lines
In 2012, Delta Air Lines had emerged like the phoenix, from the ashes of a 2008, Chapter 11
bankruptcy to become the second largest airline worldwide. Through its network of operations,
Delta provides air transport both domestically and internationally for cargo, mail, and passengers.
In the past, Delta successfully utilized mergers and acquisitions to increase its market share and
grow its existing service base. Since 2012, Delta has been aggressively seeking out new
opportunities for further growth in a volatile market with high price elasticity and low brand
loyalty. The 2008 merger with Northwest Airlinesleft Delta with higher long term debt, making
Delta vulnerable limited debt assumption required for future growth.

Delta can utilize these current benefits to emerge as a lower cost option through its increased
buying power and lower overhead costs, allowing Delta to gain higher margins while maintaining
competitive pricing with its main two competitors, American Airlines and United Airlines.
Additionally, the efficiency of the reduced fuel and operations cost structure enables Delta to set its
pricing lower than that of its competitors, which, in the end, will capture much of its competitor s
market share including that of its mid line competitor US Airways. The increased buying power for
fuel contracts will give Delta a competitive advantage should we see another spike in crude oil due
to conflicts in the Middle East. Delta must also compete with the value pricing of its lower end,
economy competitors Southwest and Jet Blue. Southwest Airlines stands out in the pack and
boasts, according to a customer satisfaction index, the highest customer satisfaction rating in the
industry at 81% in 2011.
Finding of Fact 2
Delta is forced to compete with low cost carriers.
As the old adage goes, if you can t beat them, join them . Delta s current business model makes it
incredibly difficult to compete with low cost airline carriers. The acquisition of Southwest would
not center on product differentiation but rather as the product or commodity when compared to
Delta s competitors. Delta has long proved that it is incapable of merging with or sustaining a low
cost airline. The

Summary of Canadian Confederation Essay
During the years before Confederation, there was much happening in the colonies that would
eventually unite to become the Dominion of Canada in 1867. The Fathers of Confederation were
the architects of the plan that resulted in the proposal that would bring the individual British
American colonies together under a Federalist system. There were three main conferences which
were held and to be included as a Father of Confederation. These conferences were The
Charlottetown Conference 1864, The Quebec Conference 1864, and The London Conference 1866.

Many internet companies operate as online retailers only which means they don t have to pay
any intermediaries such as distributors and they don t have to hire sales people. Thus, they can
pass some of the savings to the customers by offering reduced prices. Internet also enables the
customers to do price comparisons in an instant, thus, they can buy from the online retailer that
offers the best prices. Internet companies are aware of this thus, they price their inventory
competitively. Moreover, companies get bigger audience of their products online so they often
put clearance products on sale and offer other deals to clear out inventory faster. Moreover, most
customers are also able to save on taxes because taxes are applicable only if the online retailer
operates in the same state as the customer. Shopping mall retailers have higher costs because not
only they have to invest in physical property but they also have to hire sales people and
managerial staff. Their audience is only limited to the number of visitors in the shopping mall at
any time. Thus, they are forced to generate higher sales per customers which mean higher prices
on the average. It s also more expensive for the visitors to compare prices in terms of both cost and
time, thus, the shopping mall customers are at a

The Effect Of Ph On Catechol Oxidase
Henriquetta Saba Paul Samipla Bio 1130 20 October 2014 The Effect of pH on Catechol
Oxidase Abstract Catechol, in the presence of oxygen is oxidized by catechol oxidase to form
benzoquinone (Harel et al., 1964). Bananas and potatoes contain catechol oxidase that acts on
catechol which is initially colorless and converts it to brown (Harel et al., 1964). In this
experiment, the effect of pH on the activity of catechol oxidase was conducted using buffers
ranging from pH2 to pH10. Two trials were conducted due to the first trial results being altered
by an external factor. The results were acquired by taking readings every 2 minutes for 20
minutes from a spectrophotometer and then recorded on to the table. The data collected in the
table were then made into graphs to illustrate the influence of pH on the catechol oxidase
catalyzed reaction. After analysis, the data revealed that pH did have a significant influence on the
enzyme as recorded by absorbance per minute. However, the data was collected was not accurate
due to external factors, thus the results are debatable and should be experimented again for
validation. Introduction Living cells within our bodies perform an abundance of chemical reactions
very speedily because of the participation of enzymes. Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed
up a chemical reaction without being depleted or altered in the reaction (Garrette Grisham, 1999).

Latino Culture Vs American Culture
For the past three years I have been learning about industry and underserved communities; the

purpose of this is to create social change at the systemic level to transform communities.
When learning about the US UK Fulbright Commission, the program was described as an exchange

Fulbright Commission was to expand my limited knowledge of the UK and to nurture the
relationship between the two global powers as an ambassador of the US. That changed during a
presentation where I learned about the Wales Summer Institute. Learning about the industry,

Democracy And Its Effect On Democracy
Democracy in its most basic form is a type of governing system ruled by the citizens of a
particular society. The first form of democracy can be found in ancient Greece, and the modern
form of Democracy was established in part by the French revolution because it brought back the
idea of rule by the people. Although, for most of history democracywas not viewed in a positive
light. According to Mintz, Close, and Croci many people feared democracy because they
thought the masses would not act with reason and would try to take away power from the elite
classes (2015). It was not until relatively recently in history that democracy became the leading
form of governing around the world. This essay will focus on the different manifestations of
democracy and how they function. The core of democracy is that the people in a society should
have a say in governing and decision making; however in order to be considered a democracy a
country must follow other democratic principles. This essay will argue that in many cases
practical application of democracy does not always allow the people to have their view
adequately translated into government and policy, due to the limitations of their political system.
The only real power people have is electing a select few to their positions in government, or
voting on decisions and policy decided by those officials. This does not allow for everyone and
their views represented in government. This essay will also argue that some democratic systems

The History Of Human Language
The history of human language is long, complicated and somewhat controversial. Even the
definitions of the word language are varied slightly. The Merriam Webster dictionary states,
Language is the system of words or signs that people use to express thoughts and feelings to each
other: and one of the systems of human languagethat are used and understood by a particular group
of people: words of a particular kind . Additionally, the American Heritage Dictionary defines
language as, a communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such
as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols . Between these two definitions of language we can
see how complicated the history of human language actually is. The definitions vary based on the
assumptions of whether the writer believes language is more learned or instinctive behavior. The
debates on the origin of language are still going on today. There are two basic views represented in
the definitions of language. The first view is based on language being primarily a mental faculty of
humans to learn languages and the biological differences that are unique to the human brain. The
second view is concentrated around the idea that learning a language is natural. While other views
are more centered on the structured learning of formal signs.

Health And Health Of The World Health Organization Essay
The definition of health according to the World Health Organization is: a state of complete
physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity . It is the
goal of health psychologists to identify and understand what determines physical, mental, and social
well being. Rather than focusing on mental illness, it focuses on physical health. The aim of health
psychologyis to promote and maintain health, prevent and treat illness, identify and diagnose the
correlation between health, illness, and dysfunction, and to improve the health care system and the
formation of health policies (Graham, 131).
Personal Interest
The field of health psychology interests me because I have personally seen the effects that
psychological processes have on a person s health and well being. I was a caregiver to a family

stress, negative thinking, and lack of social contact intensified their condition. Their physical health

their depression compounded their pain, and in return, the pain exacerbated their depression. It was

positive things in life, their health improved immensely. Their symptoms improved and they were

The Two Major Theories Of International Relations

The study of international relations takes a wide range of theoretical approaches. Some emerge
from the discipline itself; others have been imported, in whole part from disciplines such as

of ideas that explains how the international system works (SparkNote on International Politics,

Societal ideas, interests, and institutions influence state behaviour by shaping state preferences, that

central point in realism is then that sometimes we as persons and still more important as

to say that we are not made moral, there is no common power, and that is international relations as
the frontiers of the state are the limits of morals which on one side we have security of the state, on

The Works Of Vincent Van Gogh

receiving praise and knowing that your hard work has paid off in the end, only for you to be
shattered when you re work is ridiculed. Now imagine that this doesn t just happen once, but
everytime. Constantly being surrounded by this negativity would surely make you believe that the
people are right; that your work is useless. This is the constant state of mind that Vincent Van Gogh
lived in with his work being heavily criticized and never praised.
Background and Audience Relevance: Van Gogh is one of the most well known artists today.
His vivid landscapes and portraits are praised for their use of different colors and bold brush

some history and culture. Impressionism was an art movements that begun in France, so naturally

Necco Wafers Research Paper
In 1847, with Oliver Chase s invention of the lozenge cutter, the famous Necco Wafers were
born. Necco Wafers quickly became an American favorite with eight flavors to enjoy: orange,
lemon, lime, clove, chocolate, cinnamon, licorice, and wintergreen. Aside from consumption,
Necco Wafers have also been used as poker chips, for first communion practice, and even as bulls
eyes at target ranges. Four billion Necco Wafers are produced each year, and if placed edge to
edge, would wrap around the world twice. In the early 1900 s, Necco Wafers came in handy for
more than just gingerbread house decorations. For example, in 1913, Donald MacMillan, an
arctic explorer, gave eskimo children the American candy on his expedition. In the 1930 s, two
and a half tons of this chalky candy were included on Admiral Byrd s two year journey in the
Antarctic, enough for each of member of his crew to consume a pound of wafers each week.
Since Necco Wafers did not melt and rarely broke during transport, during World War II, the
American government sent massive amounts of these candies overseas to soldiers. Although World
War II veterans were not the first soldiers to have rations of Necco Wafers, Union... Show more

After being flattened in a different machine, the dough is cut into wafers and stamped with the
brand name using the lozenge cutter, first American candy machine made by Oliver Chase. The
wafers are now dropped onto a moving belt where they go through a 30 minute drying process.
After, the eight flavors are mixed together and workers pack them in rows that are then
packaged. These rolls of Necco Wafers are then sold year round everywhere from convenience
stores to online, or even in bulk. In exchange for around $1.49, a roll containing all eight flavors of
wafers can be

Negative Effects Of Running Marathons
For most, running 26.2 miles just for fun is not appealing; however, others do want to run
marathons for the excitement of a race or to prove to themselves that they can do it. For many
reasons, runners are on board to hit the pavement, whether it is for the challenge or for the
numerous health benefits that come along with it, including weight loss and fitness. Because of the
positive effects of running, the negative aspects of running long distances are sometimes
overlooked. Before deciding to just get up one day and start training for a marathon, know that
running this lengthy race has both desirable and undesirable physical consequences.
Often, running is a route to weight loss and, thus, motivates individuals to get out and exercise,
to burn calories. The activity does burn calories. For example, running at a 6 mph pace burns
372 calories in 30 minutes for a 155 pound person, according to Andrea Cespedes a freelance
wellness expert. However, since calories are needed for performance during long runs, one must
increase calorie intake to fuel the run, especially if the runner s mileage is lengthy (Cespedes). In
addition, some uneducated runners believe that the exercise can be an excuse to eat unhealthy
food, saying that their running makes up for what they eat. This, however, is a myth because often
the calories are empty and do not promote general health. You ran 10 miles, therefore you deserve
the fries, shake and burger. Calories still count and running doesn t

The Killing Poor White Women
Desperation of the times . . . that s what kills them (Potts 609). Desperation, defined by the
Merriam Webster dictionary means, strong feeling of sadness, fear, and loss of hope ( Desperation
def.). In What s Killing Poor White Women?, readers learn about the life and death of Crystal
Wilson, a poor white woman from Arkansas. Crystal had many factors that exhibited the feelings
associated with desperation, lack of education, living in poverty, and living in a desolate location.
The more education a person acquires throughout their life time means they are more likely to find
high paying jobs. So, the amount of education a person receives correlates with if they live in
poverty or not. None of Crystal s siblings finished high school. Instead, they became adults when
they were teenagers (Potts 598). Without a high school diploma the chances of any of the
family members attaining a job that makes above minimum wage was almost impossible. The
desperation of not being able to make an adequate amount of money for basic needs, lowers the
life expectancy for poor women. The more educated among us are better at forgoing pleasurable
and possibly risky behavior because we ve learned to look ahead to the future (Potts 595). In the
case of Crystal, she dropped out of high school because she married Possum. In today s society a
majority of women want to continue their education before marrying, because marriage is risky
with possibilities of children, or their spouse may

  • 2. Clayton Wilkins Autobiography When I was a child the atmosphere of baseball was almost intoxicating to me. The scent of freshly cut grass as it tickles your nose, the sound of the ball whooshing through the air from the mound to the catchers glove, and the sudden crack of the bat as it knocks the little leather ball hundreds of feet out into the park. All of my senses are in full joyous glee when I am surrounded by that environment. Unfortunately, I only got to enjoy this atmosphere from the bleachers. I was born with many medical issues, one of which being asthma that did not particularly like the freshly cut grass tickling my nose. I would spend my time in the stands watching my half brothers and cousins who were much healthier than me live my dream of becoming the next... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This happened when my Great Grandmother married a man named, Clayton Thompkins. Clayton was eighty eight years old, had never married before, and did not have any kids of his own. My father had left my Mom and I many years before so the relationship seemed to spark instantly. Clayton took me under his wing and became a father figure that I was not use to having around in my life. Every Sunday at my grandmother s house, we would waste the day away with the sounds of our voices. We would discuss about our favorite team the Oakland A s and how much we despised the New York Yankees. Clayton had kept me happier that I could ever remember as a child. However, it never slipped his mind that I was upset with all my sicknesses and that I couldn t actually do any of the things we would talk about. It was then Clayton would fill my young heart with the ideas of being in sports without being on the field. The theory arose that, I could become a statistician for baseball since math came so easy to me as a subject. We would listen to ESPN Radio and he said I could be like our favorite sports radio analyst, Colin Cowherd. I may even choose to get into writing and become a sports journalist for a newspaper or magazine or even interview my favorite athletes on Television. These new dreams that Clayton inspired in me gave me new goals and purpose in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Rhetorical Devices In How I Found Religion Faith is the belief in a person, thing, or idea without concrete evidence of its certainty. Although in some arenas, such as science, it is looked down upon, faith is ever presence in people s lives. It takes faith to belief that a chair will support one s weight. It takes faith to belief that others will fulfill their promises and responsibilities. John Donne, Robert Fink, and Annie Dillard are three authors who use faithas a topic for one of their works. The use of rhetorical devices, such as tone and diction, in John Donne s Meditation 17, Robert Fink s How I Found Religionat a Baseball Game, and Annie Dillard s An American Childhood contributes to each work s message about faith, the influence of Godon the outlook of life, and the camaraderie found with others.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The diction and metaphors used in John Donne s Meditation 17 and Robert Fink s How I Found Religion at a Baseball Game creates a solemn tone that gives an impression the writer has had a great deal of experience like a socratic philosopher. In Meditation 17, Donne writes, ... and therefore never send to know whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee (Donne 24). He never outright says death or dies in his essay but only uses words like the bell tolls or buried . The words the bell tolls especially contributes to the solemn tone of his essay. Church bells in antiquity are only sounded for church services, marriages, and funerals. They are events that all should be aware off. Donne also uses the relationship between bells and emotions to contribute to the tone. Church bells used to announce funerals are usually lower pitched and are one note. From a young age, cultural rules that outline the expectations of a person in their society are instilled in a person s mind . They are molded by their fundamental role in their society and continually adhere to that role throughout their lives. They can t over cross those boundaries. The different roles assigned to a person by society influences their identity through their life. The characters of The God of small things and Chemmeen are an example of how breaking these cultural values can go well, as well as disastrously. The characters Ammu, Velutha, and Karuthamma struggle to follow these societal codes of their community and this undoubtedly leads to their demise. For my paper, I will display to you how one s community can influence one s occupation, social graces, relationships, and all in all, their whole lives. Cincinnati, OH: North Light Books. The design is a poster designed as a part of the 16th exhibition of the Viennese secession (1902). The design is a poster, laid out in a narrow vertical format. The title text stands at the top with the s glyphs stretched out to two thirds of the page length, where they draw the eye to an ornate and densely packed font outlining the names of those exhibiting, the date and presumably the location. The colours are subtle so as to recede into the background and allow the solid black of the text to stand out. The pattern in the background consists of three inverted, uneven pentagons; the inverted form creates an arrow like motion and the implied movement, aids in drawing the eye toward the bottom of the poster. The process used to create this image is lithography. In lithography, the stone is not raised as in relief printing, nor incised, as with intaglio. Rather it is formed on the flat plane of the printing surface. Printing from a flat surface is called planographic printing. (Meggs Purvis (2012)) German printers spearheaded colour lithography, and the French printer Godefroy Engelmann (1788 1839) patented a process named chromolithographie in 1837. • 11. The Impact Of The Easter Rising In Ireland The Easter Rising is commonly regarded as one of Ireland s most patriotic moments, similar to the United State s Revolutionary War. This rebellion was the result of decades of nationalism and a group of independence seeking Irishmen seeing an opportunity with England being tied up in the First World War. They were not going to let this chance pass, and they orchestrated a very secretive plan with many different moving parts, relying almost entirely upon receiving weapons from Germany and catching the English off guard. While some counties played a more active role than others, each county contributed to the rising in its own unique way. County Wicklow is not known for its active involvement in the conflict during the rebellion, however there were several people who had a significant impact on the rising. County Wicklow is located just south of County Dublin. It has a population just over 60,000, eighty percent of which are Roman Catholic. Therefore, to achieve the unity of effect in the Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, and Annabel Lee, Poe used the elements of setting, alliteration, and unreliable narrator to help elicit the unsettling mood in the audience. For the sake of the unity of effect , Poe uses setting for the purpose of conceiving a sinister mood. As Montresor and Fortunato walked deeper into the catacombs in the Cask of Amontillado, Montresor points out the trickling of the water on the bones. We are below the river s bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones. (Cask)The setting is under the surface of the earth, so the audience associates it with with Hell because of the bones that lie around. The bones also make the audience feel that the setting is eery and dangerous because it reminds them of death. This only makes isolation and danger prominent factors in the setting. The mood becomes unpredictable and treacherous, with a sense of fear and dread knowing that something bad will happen to the characters who are away from safety. Under those circumstances, Poe controlled the audience s fear and the diabolical mood using the dark setting. • 30. The Effect Of Ph On Catechol Oxidase Henriquetta Saba Paul Samipla Bio 1130 20 October 2014 The Effect of pH on Catechol Oxidase Abstract Catechol, in the presence of oxygen is oxidized by catechol oxidase to form benzoquinone (Harel et al., 1964). Bananas and potatoes contain catechol oxidase that acts on catechol which is initially colorless and converts it to brown (Harel et al., 1964). In this experiment, the effect of pH on the activity of catechol oxidase was conducted using buffers ranging from pH2 to pH10. Two trials were conducted due to the first trial results being altered by an external factor. The results were acquired by taking readings every 2 minutes for 20 minutes from a spectrophotometer and then recorded on to the table. The data collected in the table were then made into graphs to illustrate the influence of pH on the catechol oxidase catalyzed reaction. After analysis, the data revealed that pH did have a significant influence on the enzyme as recorded by absorbance per minute. However, the data was collected was not accurate due to external factors, thus the results are debatable and should be experimented again for validation. The first form of democracy can be found in ancient Greece, and the modern form of Democracy was established in part by the French revolution because it brought back the idea of rule by the people. Although, for most of history democracywas not viewed in a positive light. According to Mintz, Close, and Croci many people feared democracy because they thought the masses would not act with reason and would try to take away power from the elite classes (2015). It was not until relatively recently in history that democracy became the leading form of governing around the world. This essay will focus on the different manifestations of democracy and how they function. The core of democracy is that the people in a society should have a say in governing and decision making; however in order to be considered a democracy a country must follow other democratic principles. This essay will argue that in many cases practical application of democracy does not always allow the people to have their view adequately translated into government and policy, due to the limitations of their political system. The only real power people have is electing a select few to their positions in government, or voting on decisions and policy decided by those officials. Additionally, the American Heritage Dictionary defines language as, a communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols . The definitions vary based on the assumptions of whether the writer believes language is more learned or instinctive behavior. The debates on the origin of language are still going on today. There are two basic views represented in the definitions of language. The first view is based on language being primarily a mental faculty of humans to learn languages and the biological differences that are unique to the human brain. The second view is concentrated around the idea that learning a language is natural. While other views are more centered on the structured learning of formal signs. The stereotype of the luxurious woman portrays a woman who is extremely wealthy, adorned with jewelry and designer clothing. At first glance, a woman might aspire to live that extravagant lifestyle.
