Mobile learning for care workers
This document summarizes user testing of a prototype mobile e-learning solution designed for care workers. Mobile apps usage at BoP in Kenya- presented in Mysore, India
This document summarizes research on the gap between mobile application developers and the base of the pyramid (BoP) population in Kenya. It finds that while mobile phone penetration in Kenya is around 75%, adoption of mobile applications among the BoP is very low due to developers' poor understanding of the BoP consumer needs. Developers conduct little research, design applications based on their own assumptions, and have limited marketing. The document recommends that the tech community collaborate more with research institutions and that the government support skills development and scaling of mobile applications that can benefit the poor through policies like the Universal Access Fund.

A few years ago, with limited staff, limited budget, and limited physical space, CASA of Montgomery County turned to Train by Cell’s mobile technology to train their staff, board members, and 350 volunteers.

Going Mobile

Computers play an essential role in nearly every aspect of modern life. They are used widely in education, business, healthcare, and at home. In education, computers enable distance learning through online classes and lectures and facilitate online exams. Businesses rely on computers for marketing, managing stock exchanges, and networking with clients. In healthcare, computers are used for hospital management, storing patient health histories, monitoring patients, and aiding in diagnosis and treatment. At home, computers allow people to manage budgets, work remotely, access information online, and communicate with others. The idea was to create an app for farmers, village inspectors, and customers to view farm information, provide feedback, and help farmers project results. The idea was approved by SKC and there was interest from organic producers and potential customers. Data was also available to start developing the app. Kim requested technical and financial support as well as specialists in app development, cloud computing, and vegetable value chains.

Eileen and Sochet presented an idea to develop a research forum mobile application. The app would allow researchers, academics, and civil society to share information on natural resource management research findings and current events. They have already created an online forum but need help developing a phone app. To complete the project, they require developers, training on app software, partnerships with academic institutions, and funding.
Pitch Presentation - FHI 360
Mr. Phal Sophat is proposing a smartphone application to help reduce HIV transmission among most at-risk populations (MARPs) such as entertainment workers, men who have sex with men, and transgender individuals in urban areas of Cambodia. The application would provide these groups, over 50% of whom use smartphones, with HIV prevention information and resources as they are highly mobile with only 30% literacy. He is seeking developers to build the application and train local NGO staff, as well as interested parties to refine the idea and develop an implementation strategy with the goal of launching in April 2014 and expanding features by September 2014.
Grants fund - Development Innovations Orientation
The Development Innovations Catalyst Fund is offering $1.2 million in grants to support social innovation through technology. There are three types of grants available: short-term technical assistance grants up to $50,000; solution grants up to $100,000 to support development or implementation of ICT projects; and private partnership grants up to $150,000 to develop technology solutions of interest to social innovators. Applications are open until March 31, 2016 and will be evaluated based on addressing development challenges, sustainability, encouraging ICT uptake, tangible results, efficiency, and ability to adapt ideas from other contexts.

Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
