The library tested using handheld devices and e-readers to provide mobile reference services with decreasing staff budgets. For handhelds, they tested 4 devices and found the Fujitsu Lifebook worked best, though voice communication was important. Testing continued with iPod Touches. For e-readers, they tested Sony Readers in classrooms and for accessibility, finding issues with page refresh time, lack of interactivity, and DRM. Future partnerships across organizations were seen as important to address accessibility and format challenges.

BYOT: Why We Took The Plunge
The school took the plunge into a BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) program to meet increasing technology demands from faculty and students. A survey found that students wanted greater access to technology during the school day as the 2:1 student to computer ratio was not enough. Faculty also wanted students to have access to specialized software, increased wireless access on personal devices, and file access from home. The IT department took a user-driven approach to implement the BYOT program with clear expectations and policies to address these needs and make technology a fully integrated part of the learning environment.

While the upfront costs of equipping learners with devices and maintaining the technology can be high, mobile learning is appropriate for distance and e-learning by enabling student-student, student-teacher, and student-content interactions both synchronously and asynchronously. Materials can be quickly created, distributed, changed, updated and modified through mobile phones, PDAs, or other mobile devices, allowing instructors to provide content in various formats like text, audio, images and video. Organizational support is needed for financial, technical, and maintenance requirements to fully leverage mobile learning.

Technical Aspects of Sony Readers
Penn State University Libraries loaned out Sony Readers loaded with ebooks to students and faculty. They used virtual machines to simulate 20 separate Sony libraries on 2 computers. Each virtual machine hosted 10 Sony Readers for a total of 100 available. Content was cataloged and the devices circulated for 2 weeks with no renewals or holds allowed. English and first year seminar classes had semester-long loans while others were 2 weeks. Users received instruction and training materials. Surveys and other assessments were used to evaluate the program.

The Mobile Playground: Can Databases and iPads Play Nice?
This study examined how seven major database vendors functioned on iPad tablets. The researchers tested four areas of functionality: presentation of pages, access to multimedia content, database-specific tools, and ability to email full text. Overall, databases worked well on iPads, though some had issues with emailing full text or using Flash or Java features. While most databases did not require separate apps, apps from vendors could be useful for instruction. The researchers concluded that with some workarounds, databases and iPads can generally have good functionality for student and instructional use.

- Talk about proposal to Sony/Amazon – Spring of 2008. Sony Responded and was excited at the opportunity to gain feedback from students, library, and facultySony donated 100 model PRS-505 Sony Readers to the University Libraries so that we could carry out a pilot project
- To date, the readers have been tried in 8 class sections by 162 undergraduates and 18 graduate studentsContent pre-loaded – facilitated by the university libraries; students can also load non-proprietary content if they optimize it with CallibreEnglish Classes made presentations to Sony Electronics Inc. rep, faculty from the university libraries and english dept.Surveys & Video interviews
