Designing the technology for social good is not enough. It has to be useful for the end user. We focus on solution designs on the end user's context and level of knowledge. By closely co-developing tools with our users, the tools are more effective and resilient in the oftentimes harsh environments where they are used -- regardless of differences in language, literacy levels, or types of technology available.
Before iCamp, InSTEDD has been into a series of meeting between farmers in Kandal and Pursat province. As a result of the meeting, each group of the farmers was placed into a FB chat group consists of famers, agriculture expert, and InSTEDD team. The previous meeting, it was all about farmers, thus, to understand deep down and hear from all everyone who are working in agriculture field, iCamp was taking place to fully understand and validate the previous information and to find solutions that will work best and give out impact to farmers.
February 27, 2018 marks the official launching of the Trey Visay App, the first mobile app in the Kingdom that helps students from grade 9 to 12 to better understand and plan for their university major or career in the future.
iCamp: How might we help people to understand about Mental Health?
This iCamp was a particularly emotional one. During an iCamp, participants share their experiences. The men and women in the room shared real stories of mental health struggles that impacted family members, friends, and themselves.
The room was part brainstorm, part group therapy, as people spoke about the difficulties of finding the right care, of being targeted by judgemental people in their communities, and of the emotional toll of dealing with a loved one that was struggling, for example.
One story that was particularly striking involved a participant telling the story of how it took her family twenty years to find the right care for her family member.
An EpiHack™ is a multi-day collaboration event that brings together technologists, epidemiologists, and public health experts for intensive co-creation, networking, and prototyping of solutions for improved disease surveillance. EpiHacks were developed by the Skoll Global Threats Fund, with the support of InSTEDD, iLab Southeast Asia, Open Dream, and others. An EpiHack fuses elements of hacking (in legal software development terms), marathon-like intensive coding, and development in a short period of time, with elements of a symposium on innovations in disease surveillance and epidemiology. InSTEDD has aided in the facilitation of events and contributed to the prototypes created at several EpiHack events worldwide.
In July 2017, the InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia team organized an iCamp at The National Employment Agency in Phnom Penh. The day’s focus was on how to help youth in rural areas have better access to employment information. Participants from nine institutions from government and NGOs, collaborated together.
iCamps are day-long events dedicated to creating prototypes around social issues.
The groups brainstormed possible solutions to issues that affect children, such as poor education, migration difficulties, child abuse, abandonment, and parents behaviors.
iCamp is a day-long event for protection and rights with those who understanding of social challenges would like to build our first few prototypes to learn more about what we would like to solve.
iCamp for Education is a day-long event for technologists and those with an understanding of education challenges to design and prototype digital solutions.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia is a city that quickly inspired me with a vibration of optimism and energy. A place with a violent history that was emerging and growing its entrepreneurial spirit rapidly.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
