◈ Any academic or intellectual activity demands an evidence based argument
◈ The reference of the original source in (our) work is called citation.
◈ “Citing sources means listing the materials you used for your research”

◈ A citation is an abbreviated alphanumeric expression embedded in the body
of an intellectual work that denotes an entry in the bibliographic references
section of the work for the purpose of acknowledging the relevance of the
works of others to the topic of discussion at the spot where the citation

◈ Using an idea that someone else has already expressed

◈ It provides the readers some necessary information to find the
original source
◈ To avoid Plagiarism, the original author is acknowledged by citing
sources
◈ It helps in strengthening one’s work by lending outside support to
his/her ideas
◈ It provides a kind of authenticity to one’s argument in academic
work.
◈ It reflects one’s own reading/observing habit

◈ An in-text citation is a reference made within the body of
text of an academic essay. The in-text citation alerts the
reader to a source that has informed your own writing.
◈ The exact format of an in-text citation will depend on the
style you need to use, for example, MLA.

11. IN-TEXT CITATION
◈ Brief in-text citations point the reader to more complete
information in the Works Cited list at the end of the paper.
• In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a
page number enclosed in parentheses.

• If the author's name is not given, then use the first word or words
of the title. Follow the same formatting that was used in the
Works Cited list, such as quotation marks.
