    Mixtures and Solutions

    Vocabulary
+
    Mixture: two or more materials
    stirred together.
+
    Property: a characteristic of an
    object, something you can observe
    (color, shape, size, or texture)
+
    Solution: a special mixture formed
when a material dissolves in water.

                                    Note: solutions
                                    must be CLEAR!
+
    Dissolving: when one material
    disperses uniformly into another
material, so that the first material
    seems to disappear.
+
    Elements: cannot be reduced to
    simpler substances (everything on
    earth is made from these).

+
    Solute: a substance that dissolves
in a solvent to form a solution.
    Solvent: a substance that dissolves
the solute to form a solution.
+
    Saturated Solution: a solution in
which as much solute as possible
    has been dissolved.
+
    Concentration: the amount of material
dissolved in a measure of liquid.
+
Dilute: to make a solution less
    concentrated, usually by adding more
    liquid.
+
    Volume: is the 3-dimensional space
    occupied by something (like a
    liquid).
+
    Chemical reaction: when two or
    more materials are mixed together
    and a change occurs.
+
    Precipitate: a solid material that
forms as a product of a reaction.
+
Atom: the smallest particle of an
    element. Atoms are the building
    blocks of matter.
+
Molecule: The smallest part of a
substance that is made up of two or
    more atoms.
