Mitsubishi Electric has developed the EMIRAI 3 xDAS concept car featuring next-generation driving assistance technologies to enhance safety and comfort. Key technologies include a multi-bonding display with personalized layouts, minimization of eye movement through gesture and haptic controls, a 3D head-up display, driver sensing of face and heartbeat, cloud-based analysis of driving behavior, and remote appliance control. The car will be exhibited at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show to demonstrate Mitsubishi Electric's continued innovations in human-machine interfaces and assisted driving.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze how autonomous vehicles are becoming economically feasible throug through improvements in lasers, microelectronic mechanical systems (MEMS), integrated circuits (ICs), and other components. Although the cost of the Google Car is currently about 150,000 USD, 30% annual improvements in lasers, MEMS, and ICs will make these economically feasible for a broad number of users in the next ten years. A key issue is when certain lanes, roads or even entire highway systems are restricted to automated vehicles. This would enable collision avoidance to rely more on between-vehicle communications. This would further reduce the cost of automated vehicles, stimulate diffusion, and also reduce transportation time and increase fuel efficiency.

These sensors can be used in automotive active safety systems that aim at detecting driver’s fatigue, a major issue to prevent road accidents. The key point of this approach is to design a prototype of sensor units, so that it can serve as platform for integrating different kinds of sensors into the steering wheel. Since the sensors are attached to the steering wheel, therefore they can’t be detached by the driver. It will also detect dangerous stylish driving which may lead to fatal accidents. The major drawback is that the eye blink sensors frame worn by the driver can be removed causing the sensor non-operational. The outcome is that the vibrator attached to eye blink sensor’s frame vibrates if the driver shuts his eyes for approximately 3 seconds and also the LCD displays the respective warning message. The wheel is slowed or stopped depending on the condition. This is accompanied by the vehicle’s owner being notified through the GSM module, so the owner can retrieve the driver’s location, photograph and a list of nearby police stations through an android mobile application. Therefore, driver can be alerted during drowsiness and the owner can be notified simultaneously.

Human evolution has included the development of transportation systems. People are currently driving a significant number of fuel-powered automobiles. This resulted in an increase in the number of accidents as well as pollution in the environment. To address the disadvantages of gasolinebased vehicles, this study presents an IoT-based E-vehicle monitoring system (E-VMS) for early accident detection and to make the environment cleaner and greener by using alternative energy. E-VMS employs internet of things (IoT) technology to continuously monitor the vehicle as well as to access and control it remotely. The IoT devices installed in vehicles are built using an Arduino microcontroller and sensors to detect accidents quickly. When an accident occurs, the E-VMS recognizes it quickly and determines the severity of the incident. The machine will then promptly alert the authorities. The E-VMS is also familiar with the GPS system. This will allow the E-VMS to maintain track of the cars' location in real time. This information will be used to locate the car in the event of an accident or theft. The E-VMS system's results were promising in terms of accurately identifying accidents, determining the severity of the accident, and determining the position of the vehicle.IRJET- Review Paper on Iot Based Technology in Automobiles

EMIRAI 3 xDAS will be exhibited during the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition complex in Tokyo, Japan from October 29 to November 8. Building on the EMIRAI 2 xDAS, which was introduced at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi Electric has developed the EMIRAI 3 xDAS, with evolved technologies for human machine interface (HMI), driver sensing, telematics, and light control, under the theme of "Feelings come true." HMI (1) Multi-bonding display - LCDs panels on the dashboard and center console are laminated with and optical bonding process for high visibility and operability, as well as aesthetic harmony with vehicle interiors. - Larger images are achieved without larger LCDs by narrowing the widths between separate displays. - High-visibility panels reduce reflections thanks to optical-bonding and optical-design technologies. - Display items can be changed according to user preferences. Cloud content synchronization and selectable contents layouts enable drivers to create highly personalized interiors. The operator’s hand profile and motions are detected for simplified adjustment of air temperature and music volume. - Wearable device vibrates to notify specific passengers of information, etc. as required. - Overwrite input function, which was co-developed with Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, allows the driver to write on top of characters without confirming each time. (3) Combiner 3D Head-up display (HUD) - The HUD, which appears in the combiner provides three-dimensional images of objects up to more than 10 meters ahead of the driver so that the driver can keep their eyes on the road ahead. - 3D imaging with binocular disparity on Head-up Display. - Adjusts the display’s position in the combiner according to specific situations, such as when turning driving on an expressway, etc., for safer, easier driving. Driver sensing - The driver’s operating condition is sensed with a camera and a cardiograph that is based on a non-contact cardiograph co-developed with the National University Corporation Kyushu Institute of Technology. The driver’s face direction and line of sight are sensed via a camera. - Safe-driving support and predictive assistance based on driver behavior. - Proactive analysis of map data, for example, to identify intersections with poor visibility, and then display side-camera views looking up and down the cross street. Further, the system learns to react automatically whenever the same location/situation is reencountered. If fatigue is detected, suitable rest stops are recommended. - Collects and shares information on dangerous locations.
