The new RX brings a host of new features to market including a bold new exterior styling package with Lexus-first styling cues and a redesigned luxury cabin. It combines this dynamic new appearance with focused on-road performance and new safety technologies, including the new Lexus Safety System+ package on all variants. It is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor with improved handling, ride and steering. Lexus Australia offers the widest choice of any Lexus market in the world, with the local model line- up featuring RX 200t, RX 350 and RX 450h variants in varying grade levels. RX 200t is powered by Lexus' new turbocharged four cylinder powerplant, which develops 175kW and 350Nm and drives the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. RX 200t is available in Luxury grade and can be specified with multiple enhancement packs that offer additional luxury, convenience and safety features. RX 350 features an upgraded 3.5-litre direct injection V6 that develops 221kW and 370Nm - 15kW and 24Nm more than the previous generation - and drives all four wheels via an eight-speed transmission. RX 350 is available in Luxury, F Sport or Sports Luxury grade levels. The RX 450h hybrid develops 230kW combined system power (engine and electric motor) - a 10kW increase in combined system power over the previous generation RX 450h - and drives all four wheels via a CVT transmission. RX 450h is also available in Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury grades. Lexus RX has achieved a strong customer base in Australia. Lexus RX 400h, launched in September 2006, was the country's first petrol-electric hybrid SUV. Convenience and luxury features in the RX Line range from the first-in-category rear-view camera in 2003 to a power-closing tailgate in 2006 and the debut of Lexus Remote Touch three years later. Safety advances through the years include the introduction of a breakthrough 18-litre driver's knee airbag in 2003 and Vehicle Dynamic integrated Management (VDiM) with steering torque assist in 2006. Lexus RX 300, launched in Japan and the US in 1998, is credited with creating a new category of car-based luxury sport vehicles.
3 It was designed to combine the refinement of a luxury car with the high driving position and versatility of four-wheel drive technology. The second-generation luxury sport RX 330 V6 was released in Australia in April 2003 with immediate success, becoming Australia's most popular luxury SUV and setting the benchmark for refinement, build quality and safety. RX would go on to be Lexus' most successful model globally. Leading-edge features included sequential-shift automatic transmission and an advanced 4WD system using traction control hardware and software to control the centre differential and distribute torque to the four wheels. Passive safety equipment included intelligent multi-stage drive and passenger SRS airbags, large- size TAP (Thorax-Abdomen-Pelvis) front-seat side SRS airbags, full-length curtain-shield SRS airbags and a breakthrough 18-litre driver's knee airbag. The RX 330 also had first-in-category (luxury sports) Lexus rear view camera, a power-closing tailgate and a versatile 40/20/40 split multi-adjustable rear seat. The Sports Luxury grade featured an 11-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and touch-screen satellite navigation^. Lexus repowered the RX in March 2006 with a 3.5-litre dual-VVT-i engine, making RX 350 Australia's most powerful six-cylinder 4WD in its class at 203kW (an increase of 18 per cent over RX 330). Flowdown technology included the Adaptive Front Lighting System (headlamps that swivel to 'see around corners') and Bluetooth* technology from flagship LS 430. Driveline innovations included a six-speed sequential transmission for the first time and a new AWD system. There were a raft of interior improvements, including the new Lexus Remote Touch navigation system and more powerful climate control for greater occupant comfort. Safety developments included availability of the Pre-Collision Safety System, a rear camera on all models, wide-view side camera, parking sensors and an upgrade to the VDiM. Four months later Lexus Australia launched the new RX 450h, with the first production Atkinson cycle V6 hybrid engine. All models have powered and air conditioned front seats with memory, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Pre-Collision Safety System, All-Speed Active Cruise Control, Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management, rear-view camera, touch-screen satellite navigation*, power steering-column adjustment and power back door with emblem sensor. Power and fuel efficiency have been improved for all models, highlighted by a 39 per cent improvement in torque and 27 per cent power increase over the superseded model for the entry level RX 200t. The turbocharged petrol 8AR-FTS engine in new RX 200t delivers 175kW of power from 4800 to 5600rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1650 to 4000rpm. Fuel economy is 16 per cent better than the superseded RX 270 at 8.1 litres/100km on the ADR 81/02 combined cycle*. The new RX 350 has seven per cent more power and four per cent more torque, while returning 11 per cent greater fuel economy. RX 350's new-generation 2GR-FKS engine has 221kW of power at 6300rpm and 370Nm of torque at 4700rpm, with combined cycle fuel economy of 9.6 litres/100km*. 12 The new Lexus RX 200t has an innovative turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with a Stop & Start system and the ability to operate on both the fuel-saving Atkinson cycle and the conventional Otto cycle. The late intake valve closing of the Atkinson cycle reduces pumping losses and boosts fuel economy. The turbo engine is matched to an electronically controlled sequential-shift six-speed automatic transmission and front-drive via a pre-load differential. The automatic transmission has cutting-edge Lexus electronic control technology, including G- Sensor Sports AI-Shift control. Special attention was paid during the Lexus 8AR-FTS engine development program to minimising turbo 'lag', including the use of a twin-scroll turbocharger and mounting the intercooler to the engine to minimise the intake volume downstream of the turbocharger to optimise response. Breakthrough features include an integrated cylinder head and four-into-two exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger, and the latest iteration of the Lexus intelligent variable valve timing system, known as VVT-iW ('W' for wide). The wider range of inlet timing variation in the VVT-iW system means the RX 200t engine can switch instantly between Atkinson and Otto cycles, according to vehicle operating conditions. Lexus has previously used the Atkinson combustion cycle exclusively in hybrid-model petrol engines. The 8AR-FTS engine also has the latest Lexus fuel injection system, known as ESTEC D-4ST (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) and an air-to-liquid intercooler. The D-4ST system splits injection between high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port injection according to driving conditions, providing optimum combustion at all times. Integrated systems Lexus has combined the cylinder head, exhaust manifold and intercooler with variable waste-gate control to optimise low-speed torque and fuel economy, while meeting strict emission requirements. Active waste-gate control minimises pumping losses by reducing back pressure during low engine load. The VVT-iW system optimises torque throughout the engine revolution range. It allows the engine to start in the Otto cycle and run in the more fuel efficient Atkinson cycle when required. The VVT-iW system has a mid-position lock to enable Atkinson cycle to be maintained without sacrificing starting performance in cold weather and also to deliver Wide Open Throttle performance.
13 Advanced features The RX 200t engine is cast with low nickel content, heat-resistant steel. Cooling oil jets under the pistons improve durability and enhance warm-up performance. Twin balance shafts with resin gears minimise engine vibration to improve cabin comfort - a marked improvement in four-cylinder engine technology. Further measures to reduce noise, vibration and harshness 'at the source' include an electric air bypass valve and a resonator in the intake system, to reduce the characteristic 'turbo sigh' when the throttle is closed. Sequential-shift transmission Lexus RX 200t has a sequential-shift six-speed automatic transmission. Sequential shifting can be initiated via the gear lever on the steering wheel. The U661 transaxle makes RX 200t only the second Lexus to be compatible with the Stop & Start engine system. A compact, lightweight, ultra-low-noise electrically driven oil pump supplies pressure to the start-off clutch, so the transmission is ready to operate before the engine starts. The oil-pump was specially engineered for low noise, as it continues to operate when the engine is stopped. The U661 transaxle networks with the turbocharged engine to achieve a balance of boost pressure, for improved performance and fuel economy. Features of the new transaxle include a specialised torque converter to complement the turbo engine, low-loss friction materials, a low-loss thrust bearing and low-loss fluid-pressure control system. The RX 200t's transaxle is an evolution of the U660 transmission proven in other Lexus models. It is a lightweight, compact unit with an impressive array of electronic-control features designed to provide smooth shifting and acceleration, optimum fuel economy and response, and sporting driving performance. Fuel-saving features include flexible torque-converter lock-up control from second to sixth gear. Sport AI shift control Lexus Sport AI (artificial intelligence) shift control is a transmission algorithm designed to manage the shift regime according to road conditions and driver intention, thereby optimising the characteristics of the turbo engine.
14 It includes Driver-intention Control, Sudden Braking Downshift Control and G-AI Shift Control. Driver-intention Control monitors accelerator usage and vehicle condition to provide gear shift patterns that suit sporty driving. G-AI Shift Control uses G-sensor information to help set up for a corner and ensure optimum response when re-acceleration occurs. It combines the RX 200t features of Drive Mode Select (DMS) and the new G-sensor when the transmission is in D (automatic) mode. The system selects the most suitable gear for sporting driving by monitoring the status of the vehicle's G sensor, with shifting selection biased towards the lower gears to draw out the full potential of the turbocharged engine. When entering a corner in the D range with SPORT mode selected, the vehicle condition is determined using information gathered from the G-sensor and driver operations, and the transmission downshifts to the optimum gear. While cornering, the gear is held to enable powerful acceleration at the corner exit. Powertrain Cooperative Control Powertrain Cooperative Control uses information based on driver operations, vehicle condition and driving environment to match engine and transmission settings and optimise driveability. In DMS SPORT mode, the targeted drive force and gear range are set according to accelerator pedal angle to provide a sportier driving experience and acceleration from the turbo engine. Weights and measures The Lexus turbo engine weighs just 160kg and was bench-tested for more than 10,000 hours before extensive on-road testing began, covering more than one million kilometres. The Lexus turbo spins to 180,000rpm. Lexus developed a new 0-20W viscosity lubricating oil without calcium content to remove the chance of engine knock at low engine revolutions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TURBO RX HAS STOP & START TECHNOLOGY The new RX 200t turbo adopts the fuel-saving Lexus Stop & Start engine system. The breakthrough Stop & Start system for the Lexus turbocharged petrol engine made its Australian debut in February 2015 on NX 200t.
15 The Lexus system delays engine start-up until the accelerator pedal is activated to maximise fuel savings; many other start and stop systems restart the engine when the brake pedal is released. Intensive development work with the Lexus turbo 8AR-FTS engine's direct-injection technology allows a firing stroke to commence in less than half a crankshaft revolution, providing quicker response. The turbo engine's bespoke D-4S system can inject fuel into the one cylinder while that cylinder is stopped on its compression stroke, allowing ignition and combustion to occur simultaneously to quickly re-start the engine. For added safety and convenience, Lexus Stop & Start operates simultaneously with the Brake Hold function and RX 200t's all-speed active cruise control system. Lexus RX 200t's engine stops automatically while the vehicle is stationary, such as at traffic lights and in heavy traffic. The engine re-starts when the accelerator pedal is depressed and the Brake Hold function is automatically cancelled. A high-performance battery and high-precision battery sensor optimise power supply performance, enabling the engine to be stopped for longer periods. If the Active Cruise Control is in use, the engine stops when the vehicle stops (even if the brake pedal is not activated) and re-starts when the preceding vehicle starts off. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RX 350 AND RX 450h FEATURE UPGRADED POWERTRAINS The powertrains on all-new RX 350 and RX 450h have received a range of enhancements to improve performance and efficiency. RX 350 features a new specification 3.5-litre quad cam V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission with M Mode, for improved driveability and fuel economy. The new Lexus 2GR-FKS engine has 14kW more power and 14Nm more torque than the superseded dual VVT-i 2GR-FE engine. The 2GR-FKS engine has the additional features of VVT-iW (Wide) on the inlet camshaft and the Lexus D-4S dual injection system of high-pressure direct injection and port injection. It is the first Lexus engine to combine VVT-iW and D-4S.
16 The continuously variable valve timing VVT-iW system is shared with the new turbocharged 8AR- FTS engine. Its greater range of adjustment means the valve timing can be advanced for greater performance or retarded, so the engine operates in the high expansion-ratio Atkinson cycle for greater economy. The result is higher torque throughout the engine revolution range. Fuel economy has been optimised by paying careful attention to the balance between direct and port injection, according to engine load and operating conditions. The Lexus VVT-iW system adjusts the inlet timing to ensure reliable engine start in conditions of extreme cold and impressive wide-open throttle (WOT) performance. Centre-spool type control has been adopted for the VVT actuation, with the oil-control valve built into the VVT system to shorten the oil path - enhancing responsiveness and operability in cold conditions. There is a mid-position lock on the intake system VVT. Lexus designed the 2GR-FKS engine and the latest RX 450h 2GR-FXS engine using computer- aided engineering rigidity analysis for key components such as the cylinder block, oil pan and timing-chain cover to suppress noise and vibration at high engine output and high injection- pressure scenarios. The rigidity of the chain case and cylinder head cover has been optimised to reduce noise transmission from the valvetrain parts and high-pressure fuel pump. A sound and heat-insulating engine cover has been adopted for the new-generation V6 engines. Lexus RX 350 F Sport has the additional feature of an optimally tuned sound generator with three resonance frequencies for a powerful and distinctive Lexus intake sound. Eight-speed transmission New-generation RX 350 has an eight-speed sequential-shift transmission in lieu of the previous six-speed transmission, for added driver involvement, driveability and fuel economy. New electronic control technology further adds to driveability. F Sport models have paddle shifters on the steering wheel and paddle shift-shift control in D-range to downshift for corners or in preparation for acceleration. All models have Drive Mode Select, with three mode settings on Luxury and five on Sports Luxury and F Sport grades. The Lexus U881F transmission provides a balance of linear acceleration, optimum fuel economy
17 and driveability under all conditions, plus smooth shift feel. The eight internal ratios have been chosen to balance the needs of sports driving and fuel economy - with a low first gear ratio for initial acceleration, closely spaced ratios in the intermediate gears for performance and urban-driving economy, and a tall eighth-gear ratio for motorway economy. The overall spread of ratios is 44 per cent greater than the superseded six-speed transmission. First gear is 20 per cent shorter than the ratio in the Lexus six-speed transmission and top gear is 16 per cent taller. The internal ratios are: first, 5.250; second, 3.028; third, 1.950; fourth, 1.456; fifth, 1.220 sixth, 1.000; seventh, 0.808; eighth, 0.673 and reverse, 4.014; and the final-drive ratio is 3.329:1. The U881F transmission can be used in D (automatic) or M mode, for a direct and sporty driving feel. The M mode provides full torque-converter lock-up from third to eighth gears for 'clutchless' manual shifting when accelerating and lock-up from second to eighth gears when decelerating. Down changes in M mode are made with the transmission's throttle blipping control matching the engine speed to the gear. In addition, the RX 350 transmission is linked to the Lexus Drive Mode Select function, with its ECO, NORMAL and SPORT modes on Luxury and the addition of SPORT S and SPORT S+ on Sports Luxury and F Sport. NORMAL mode provides the fuel economy and seamless acceleration traditionally associated with a Lexus electronically-controlled transmission. It uses the eight ratios for optimum fuel economy while coordinating control with the throttle to provide smooth acceleration with minimum feeling of gear changes. SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes include newly adopted G-sensor AI-Shift Control, which uses information from the G-sensor on driving status to provide the optimal gear ratio for performance driving. The system selects the suitable gear for sporting driving by monitoring the status of the vehicle's G- sensor, with shifting selection biased towards the lower gears to draw out the full potential of the 3.5-litre engine. The transmission uses G-sensor information to automatically downshift during hard braking to set up for a corner, hold a lower gear through the corner for greater control, and then give the driver a greater power response on corner exit by selecting a suitably low gear. In 'Sport M' transmission mode - which the driver selects by moving the shift lever to M while in the
18 SPORT drive modes - the vehicle can be driven with the feeling of a manual transmission. The Lexus transmission software also monitors throttle opening to provide the acceleration the driver requires, in a system known as Linear Drive-force Management. It can initiate a quick downshift depending on throttle position to ensure responsive re-acceleration out of a corner or a quick upshift to maintain momentum. This minimises the variation in acceleration rate as vehicle speed increases, for a continuous acceleration feeling. Another control technology, Downshift Control, ensures that downshifting response matches driver intention. It prioritises the time taken for the drive force to reach the final gear step when the throttle pedal is pressed sharply, while sequence downshift control prioritises smooth transfer of drive force when the accelerator pedal is pressed slowly. RX 350 F Sport models have paddle shifters that can also be used in D (automatic) mode to initiate downshifts. This feature, known as 'temporary sequential mode', helps the driver set up for a corner or simply slow the vehicle in a low-speed zone. The current gear can be seen in the Multi Information Display (MID). The transmission returns to normal operation from temporary sequential mode when the vehicle stops, is driven at a constant speed for more than one minute (in fourth gear or above) or the driver holds the up-shift paddle. RX 450h: Improved performance and efficiency The new-generation hybrid Lexus RX 450h has improved performance and fuel economy, and reduced emissions. Lexus has made driveability, efficiency and packaging improvements throughout the RX 450h driveline and hybrid system. The new 2GR-FXS 3.5-litre Atkinson cycle quad cam dual VVT-i V6 petrol engine has an additional 18Nm of torque (at lower revolutions) and 10kW more power than the previous engine. The petrol engine delivers 193kW of power at 6000rpm and 335Nm of torque at 4600rpm. The Lexus hybrid system blends that power with the 123kW front electric motor and, when required, the 50kW motor in the E-Four AWD system. RX 450h has an all-gear electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, for ideal gearing at all times and no energy loss through slippage.
19 The new engine adopts the Lexus D-4S dual injection system of high-pressure direct and port injection. The compression ratio has been raised from 12.5:1 to 13.0:1 for improved power and torque throughout the revolution range. The intake ports and combustion chambers have been redesigned to increase the degree of mixture tumbling and improve combustion. The cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has been further refined to improve thermal efficiency and reduce emissions. The cylinder head and exhaust manifold have been integrated, to expand the driving range of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and reduce emissions. Special attention was paid to minimising NVH, both at the source and through new engine covers. CAE analysis of major components has helped suppress noise from high engine output and cylinder pressures, while new designs for the cam-chain case and engine cover suppress noise from the valvetrain and high-pressure fuel pump. A new heat and sound-insulating resin engine cover has been adopted. The 2GR-FXS engine stops when not required to propel the vehicle and electric motor power is used for reversing. The electronically controlled VVT-i system has a default setting to allow for easier and smoother petrol-engine restarting. Special features in the RX 450h design minimise power-drain on the petrol engine to maximise fuel savings while also allowing vital systems to operate when the petrol engine is stopped. The vehicle has electric power-assisted steering and an electric-powered air conditioning compressor. The RX 450h engine does not have a conventional alternator or starter motor. A DC-DC converter supplies 14V power for the RX 450h ancillaries. The number one motor-generator in the RX 450h hybrid transaxle acts as the petrol-engine starter motor when required. Enhanced transaxle Lexus RX 450h's P313 transaxle has been improved to increase fuel efficiency. It has a newly adopted water-to-air cooler for the electric drive motor and reduced oil agitation
20 losses thanks to a newly introduced baffle plate. The new electric motor cooler helps improve fuel economy by optimising electric-motor performance. The unique RX 450h front-axle driveline consists of a V6 petrol engine, transmission damper, compound set of planetary gears and two electric motors/generators. The compound planetary gear set acts as an electronic continuously variable transmission, changing the transmission ratio for optimum performance, driveability and economy. State-of-the-art transmission electronics include the Lexus AI Shift and the Lexus Sequential Shiftmatic System. The sequential shift system allows the driver to select from six gear ranges by moving the shift lever from D to S and shifting between the '+' or '-' symbols. Mechanical connection The Lexus Hybrid Drive in RX 450h has as its mechanical heart a compound set of planetary gears. The two sets of gears combine to perform three roles. One set acts as a motor-speed reduction device for the electric drive motor, and the other as a power-split device, dividing petrol engine power between the generator and the front wheels. Collectively, they act as an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT). The E-CVT smoothly adjusts the engine output speed and the front motor speed to provide drive to the front wheels. The use of planetary gears to perform two roles provides a significant saving in weight and space under the bonnet compared with either a traditional automatic transmission or a belt-and-pulley type CVT. Engine power can be transmitted to the front axle via the mechanical path and the electrical path, or a mixture of both. Some of the engine's power output is transmitted to the electric motor via the generator, as supplementary power for vehicle acceleration. As well as propelling the vehicle, the Lexus Hybrid Drive system allows for energy-saving regenerative braking on both the front and rear axles. Hybrid system improvements Lexus has further refined the power control unit (PCU), hybrid battery and hybrid system electronic control unit in RX 450h for improved driveability, fuel economy, HV performance and interior
21 comfort. The PCU motor control and DC-DC control have been optimised to improve fuel economy and reduce NVH. The hybrid-system battery case and wiring harness have been redesigned for greater package efficiency. The installation position of the battery cooling blower has been changed and the height of the main body lowered by 20mm, allowing for increased rear seat cushion thickness and greater comfort. A pulse-type blower has been adopted to reduce noise. Improvements to the hybrid system ECU include petrol-engine control and HV power management. Driving performance and driver friendliness have been improved under acceleration and deceleration. When accelerating, the power mode emphasises performance by making better use of petrol engine power and the mid-range acceleration contribution from the electric-drive motor. When decelerating, the rate of retardation and the engine sound have been tuned to give a sporty driving feel. The sequential shift feature can be used to downshift the transmission for the optimum feeling of engine braking and to set up for a corner. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEXUS RX LINE HAS TWO AWD SYSTEMS Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h use bespoke all-wheel drive systems, both designed to maximise traction, cornering stability and driver control while saving fuel. RX 350 has the new-generation Dynamic Torque Control system and RX 450h has an improved Lexus E-Four system. In a Lexus first, RX 350 and RX 450h drivers can view the torque distribution in real time on the multi-information display. All RX Line models have a newly adopted pre-load front differential for improved take-off performance and straight-line stability. Dynamic Torque Control
22 The compact, lightweight Lexus Dynamic Torque Control system uses information on vehicle speed, steering and throttle angles, and yaw rate to control torque distribution automatically between the front and rear axles. It saves fuel by driving only the front wheels when the vehicle is cruising, switching to AWD when needed via an electromagnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential housing. Pre-torque control can direct 10 per cent of the available torque to the rear wheels as soon as the driver starts to turn the steering wheel, such as when entering a corner. Yaw-rate feedback control can feed additional torque to the rear wheels every six milliseconds, ensuring an ideal torque split - up to a maximum of 50 per cent. When moving from standstill on slippery roads, it distributes torque to the rear wheels within the range of 100:0 to 50:50 for optimum stability based on available traction. Normal driving control will resume when the vehicle's speed reaches 25km/h. Rear-drive torque is disengaged when brake control systems such as ABS or vehicle stability control (VSC) are in operation, to prevent interference with these functions. The driver can manually override the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system at speeds up to 40km/h by pushing the AWD LOCK button to achieve maximum all-wheel grip. The RX 350 VSC can use the new AWD system to control the front-rear torque split if operating conditions require. For example, sudden acceleration of any vehicle during cornering can cause a driven wheel to start spinning, which in turn could cause the front or rear wheels to skid, resulting in a loss of control. The AWD system controls torque distribution to ensure RX 350 follows the driver's intended line to improve initial turn-in when cornering. If the VSC detects approaching oversteer, rear-wheel torque is reduced. If approaching understeer is detected, rear-wheel torque is increased. Lexus E-Four The Lexus E-Four proactive all-wheel drive system uses an electric motor to drive the rear axle while the front axle can be propelled by petrol or electric power, or a mixture of both. New-generation RX 450h has an improved E-Four system, with a three-shaft configuration to reduce the number of parts and improve package efficiency by reducing the spacing between the input and output shaft. Rear electric motor control functions have been improved to optimise turning performance as the vehicle accelerates through a corner.
23 The E-Four system case and cover are now made from aluminium to reduce weight. The Lexus E-Four system can vary torque distribution to the rear wheels, depending on driving dynamics and road conditions. It provides a level of start-off stability and acceleration on snow-covered or other slippery road surfaces that is appropriate for all-wheel drive models. E-Four saves energy and therefore fuel because the vehicle only uses all-wheel drive when it is needed - for example, in response to a loss of front-wheel traction. If the system detects loss of traction in the front wheels, it reduces the electricity supply to the traction motor in the transaxle and increases supply to the rear-axle motor. The rear motor can act as a generator when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, increasing the amount of vehicle kinetic energy recovered when it decelerates. The new E-Four system has situation-specific control features, including an improved yaw-rate control system for enhanced driving performance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEXUS RX LINE HAS PRE-LOAD DIFFERENTIAL Lexus has adopted a pre-load differential on every RX model to improve driveability. It provides enhanced steering feel and greater ease of control under acceleration and deceleration in a wide variety of driving and road conditions. The pre-load differential facilitates smoother control during take-off and improved low-speed manoeuvrability when turning on normal or slippery road surfaces. When driving at a constant speed in a straight line on a motorway, the device delivers a more stable feeling when the steering wheel is in the neutral position. On gravel or rough road surfaces the new differential acts to increase straight-line stability. The key component of the pre-load differential is a conical spring between the differential case and the side gear. It applies preload in the differential case during light loads and at low differential revolutions, providing torque to limit the speed difference between the driven wheels.
24 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW RX HAS IMPROVED RIDE AND HANDLING The new-generation Lexus RX Line has improved handling, ride and steering response. Lexus has redesigned the RX body structure to improve rigidity and provide a stable platform for the vehicle's improved suspension. The new RX has a larger footprint on the road, providing increased stability. The wheelbase has been increased by 50mm, and track by 10mm front and rear. Lexus RX Line has MacPherson-strut front suspension and trailing-arm double-wishbone rear suspension. The rear suspension has short coil springs and separate dampers to maintain a low floor line and optimise cabin space. The suspension and RX's electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering have been improved and recalibrated. Special aerodynamic features on the body and underbody optimise handling stability and straight- line stability at motorway speeds. RX 350 and RX 450h F Sport and Sports Luxury models have the additional feature of Active Variable Suspension. Lexus has comprehensively redesigned the RX body to optimise safety and body rigidity. High-strength and hot stamp steel sheet up to 980MPa tensile strength have been adopted, along with special techniques to strengthen key panel joints - additional spot welds, greater use of body adhesive and Lexus-developed laser-screw welding. Improvements have been made to the rigidity of the cowl and connection between the front- suspension towers and between the rear-wheel housings, as well as the door frames, back-door opening and rear body frame. Examples include the new annular construction for the door surrounds and the new rear-body frame construction, which increases rigidity while reducing weight. The new rear body design suppresses deformation of the rear-door opening and disperses input from the rear suspension into the rear quarter pillar and rear pillar.
25 Improvements to RX Line's front suspension include a new, large diameter stabiliser bar to increase front roll stability and minimise roll when cornering. The stabiliser-bar bushings now have internal rings to optimise stabiliser-bar effectiveness and initial steering response. Changes to the stabiliser bar mean the front spring rate can be reduced, to optimise ride comfort, while reducing roll when turning. Softer front bound-stopper characteristics have been adopted to provide a more natural roll posture when cornering. Roll stability has been increased by 10 per cent. New-generation hub bearings increase front-axle stability and therefore vehicle stability in corners. The rear suspension has been optimised to ensure a firm suspension feel and excellent steering response. Special attention was paid to the bushing rigidity of the lower number-one arm on both the body and carrier sides. RX Line's ride comfort has been further improved by the increase in wheelbase, and a reduction in vertical body movement over both hard and soft bumps. The steering hardware in RX Line has been optimised, to deliver improved steering response and steering feel. The rigidity of the intermediate shaft and instrument-panel reinforcements have been increased to reduce localised deflection. The steering-gear ratio has been revised and the electric power-assistance curve recalibrated to offer excellent stability while providing quicker steering response. The steering-feel target was agility and feedback for smooth corner entry, ease of maintaining steering angle when deeper into the corner, and slower steering-wheel return speed for good controllability on corner exit. RX Line F Sport models have a unique EPS steering calibration. The RX Line braking system has been refined for improved pedal feel on petrol models. All models have new ventilated rear brakes, with 338mm by 18mm disc rotors with floating callipers replacing the previous 309mm by 10mm solid discs and fixed callipers. The electronically controlled brake system in new RX 450h smooths brake feel by providing a
26 natural transition between regenerative and friction braking. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AVS SYSTEM DEBUTS ON RX LINE The new RX 350 and RX 450h F Sport and Sports Luxury grades have, for the first time, the added comfort and flat-ride stability of Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). AVS electronically controls and monitors all four dampers simultaneously to suit certain conditions and driving preferences. It increases ride comfort when driving on rough roads by lowering the damping force, but can also deliver a sporting drive with greater response and handling stability by increasing the damping force when SPORT S+ mode is engaged via Drive Mode Select. RX Line has the latest Lexus AVS iteration, with linear-solenoid actuators and 30 levels of damping-force switching in lieu of nine in previous generations, providing more precise control. In new RX the actuators are located on the lower side of the damper body - below the spring in the case of the front dampers. The RX Line designers specified this location, instead of the traditional actuator location on top of the dampers, to lower the bonnet line and maximise cargo space. AVS also interacts with RX Line's Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS)/Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+), optimising damper rates to prepare the vehicle during potentially hazardous driving situations. For example, AVS will increase front damper force to prevent dive during emergency braking. It also monitors steering operations and road conditions, and adjusts the dampers to suit - monitoring inputs on vehicle posture including roll, dive and squat. AVS provides distinct advantages in the following conditions: Rough surfaces Switches to a lower damping force (oil moves through the dampers quickly) to help absorb vibrations for a smoother ride. Heavy braking or hard acceleration Damping force is increased (less oil is allowed to move through the damper) for ideal vehicle composure when the vehicle pitches forward or back. This is detected from the brake/accelerator pedal (not just from vehicle angle sensors) to ensure early AVS reaction.
27 Cornering Damping force is increased to ensure exceptional handling and reduced body roll through the turn, creating a feeling of unity flowing from natural and smooth vehicle movements while providing a more comfortable ride. The AVS system has the following damping force controls: Vehicle speed sensing control Controls damping force in accordance with vehicle speed to help achieve both ride comfort at low speed and handling stability at high speed. Roll attitude control Based on signal input from steering, yaw rate and linear G sensors, the system controls damping forces on all four wheels to maintain optimum vehicle attitude during cornering. Anti-dive control The system predicts that the vehicle will pitch forward due to brake operation based on the pressure in the brake master cylinder, and maintains a higher damping force. This moderates the speed at which the vehicle pitches forward, helping ensure ride comfort and handling stability. Anti-squat control This feature predicts a squat condition due to acceleration, based on output torque signals from the engine control computer or the HV control computer, and increases damping force. This reduces the amount of vehicle attitude change, helping ensure excellent ride comfort and handling stability. Rebound control Based on signals from a vertical G sensor, oscillations are detected in the directions of heave, roll and pitch due to inputs from the road surface. By controlling damping force on all four wheels, rebound is naturally smoothed down to ensure excellent ride comfort. Ruggedness-sensing control Low damping force is maintained when rough vibration is sensed by the vertical G sensor output while driving over irregular road surfaces. This lessens the transmission of vibrations to the cabin to provide a more comfortable ride. Unsprung mass vibration control damping A higher damper force is maintained when unsprung resonance is detected, based on speed- sensor signal output, thereby ensuring optimum road holding with no loss of ride comfort (unsprung mass being the mass of the brakes, suspension and wheels). VSC Cooperative Control Appropriate damping force is exerted in response to vehicle side skid and friction coefficient changes in the road surface, based on damping force and cooperative control signals from the skid control computer, thereby ensuring the VSC effect. PCS/LSS+
28 When the driving support computer judges that there is a possibility of a collision, the PCS system exerts the appropriate damping-force cooperative control. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LONGER AND WIDER RX FEATURES DYNAMIC STYLING The exterior styling package on all-new RX delivers a dramatic appearance in tune with the model's bold new direction. Its aggressive spindle grille design sets the tone for the styling package, fusing with the overall body to deliver a sleek, streamlined appearance. The new headlamp design complements the more pronounced spindle grille and works in combination with the daytime running lamps to provide a strong, commanding frontal road presence. The side design is characterised by a sharp, angular profile while continuing the lines of the spindle grille from the front to the rear. The rear design evokes the styling elements of the front, specifically the trapezoidal spindle grille design, to provide continuity and a feeling of width, which contributes to the aggressive styling nature across all grades. The wheelbase of new RX is 50mm longer to provide additional rear legroom. RX is 120mm longer and 10mm wider but 20mm lower than the previous generation vehicle, adding to its sleek profile. Front and rear track have also increased to 1640mm and 1630mm respectively, an increase of 10mm each over the third generation RX. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SELECTABLE WHEELS AND WIDE COLOUR CHOICE ENHANCE INDIVIDUALITY All-new RX offers a wide range of paint and interior colours to match its striking body and cabin designs.
29 Sports Luxury models allow further customisation via unique 20-inch alloy wheels with world-first selectable colour inserts. The selectable inserts are standard in the Sonic Titanium colour but can be optioned in black, amber and Sonic Quartz (white) to provide a custom, individual appearance. Luxury and F Sport grade alloy wheel designs provide a dynamic appearance while also featuring specific constructions befitting of the grade. The Luxury grade alloy wheels feature a medium-grey machined alloy wheel with a hollow chamber construction, similar to that of the Lexus LS flagship sedan, for improved NVH performance. F Sport rims receive a multiple spoke design and exclusive dark metallic finish to emphasise the grade's sporting intention. The RX colour spectrum includes six new colours: Sonic Quartz (white), titanium, vermillion (red), Graphite Black, Deep Blue and Deep Metallic Bronze. Existing colours from previous-generation RX are also available: White Nova (F Sport only), Premium Silver, Metallic Silk and onyx (black). The premium leather-accented RX interior is also available in new colours - Noble Brown and Topaz Brown - joining black and ivory to provide a unique interior ambience. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RX CABIN OOZING WITH STYLE AND LUXURY Fourth-generation Lexus RX combines high levels of build quality with superior ergonomic design to deliver the ideal environment for all occupants. It is based on Lexus' concept of Human Machine Interface (HMI), separating the operation and display zones for enhanced operability and minimum external driver distraction. The remote touch controller takes centre stage in the operation zone and is ergonomically positioned to allow natural, intuitive control. The instrument panel incorporates a wide, flowing structure to provide a sense of openness and fluidity through the operation zone. A new vertical element from the meter hood to the centre cluster separates the display zone and operation zone to give the driver a distinct cockpit feel when behind the wheel.
30 The centre console also exhibits a long, flowing form to provide a welcoming and spacious feel to the cabin. The RX cabin also offers greater complexity of material composition, textures and shapes to enhance the feeling of contemporary luxury. Placement of the multimedia screen in the display zone is also designed to provide maximum ease of use without distracting the driver from the road ahead. The new generation RX front seats feature an ergonomic design, with a cut-in side shape to enable easy operation of the remote touch controller. They also incorporate rounded seat cushions with a vertical stitch pattern to provide a cohesive, luxurious appearance. Quilting on the seat-backs matches the door trim to provide an additional feeling of design unity. Door trims also receive a substantial upgrade through enhanced arm rests with soft-feel material and relocation of the door lock knobs (from inside the door handle to the door trim shoulder) to achieve a premium appearance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLEVER PACKAGING COMPLEMENTS QUALITY SURROUNDS The new-generation Lexus RX Line has increased passenger and luggage space, and features world-first height-adjustable front cup holders. The luxury SUV's wheelbase has been increased by 50mm, contributing to a 30mm increase in couple distance (improving rear-seat leg room) and a 20mm increase in luggage area length. The front and rear pillars, and the door opening/exterior mirror placement, have been redesigned to increase the driver's field of view. All RX models have a wireless charger within the dashboard centre box. The storage options include a vertical-sliding height adjustment mechanism for the front cup holder section. The bottom of the cup holder section can be lowered by pressing it down with the object, and the bottom can be raised by pressing the up button.
31 Interior comfort and quality improvements include new seats at the front and rear. The front seats have a new frame, enhanced pelvic and thigh support, and a greater range of adjustment. Front-seat heating and ventilation has been improved, with greater wiring density for the heater elements and double air flow for the ventilators. The new seat-back frame construction helps boost RX Line's rear-seat knee room to 38mm. New seat cushion and seat-back shapes enhance support for the pelvis while increasing the feeling of integration with the vehicle. The seat strap position has been revised, bringing the cushion shape closer to that of the human body when the seat is occupied. The lower seat-back bulges out, creating a better pelvic angle for comfortable support. Cushion shape and firmness have been optimised to prevent fatigue on long drives. The angle of the seat cushion between the hip point and the lower thigh has been increased by 8.4 degrees to 19.4 degrees, enhancing occupant holding and reducing slippage for reduced fatigue. Seat-adjustment range has been increased with a 15mm expansion of the downwards adjustment range, giving a total of 60mm lifter adjustment. RX Line has a 10-way adjustable driver's seat in Luxury and F Sport models, and 14-way front adjustment in Sports Luxury models, including power adjustment in key areas. The rear seat has also been redesigned for greater comfort and convenience. The seat-back bolster angle has been increased by five degrees to 40 degrees, for improved holding performance. Luxury and F Sport models have a 40/20/40 split manual reclining and folding rear seat, with a recliner damper for more gentle movement when reclining the seat back. Sports Luxury grades have a power reclining and folding 60/40 split rear seat with seat heaters. The seat can be reclined by using switches on the sides of the seat. It can also be folded by using switches on the sides of the seat, the driver's seat and inside the luggage compartment. All RX models have Lexus Drive Mode Select, with the controller on the centre console. The switch controls the various drive modes and allows the driver to customise the Adaptive Variable Suspension on F Sport and Sports Luxury models.
32 There are supplementary switches for VSC OFF, AWD Lock (on RX 350 and RX 450h), EV Mode on RX 450h and the disable button for Stop & Start on RX 200t. Storage locations include a centre box, console box, glove box, overhead console for small items, driver's side small-item storage, passenger-side console pocket, cup holders with vertical-sliding height adjustment, door pockets and rear cup holders. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RX LINE HAS NEW AUDIO SYSTEMS Lexus RX Line has the latest-generation large-format display audio head units with Green Edge speakers. The new audio head units have full-screen TFT display of the menu and satellite navigation# maps, with eight-inch display on Luxury and F Sport models, and 12.3-inch display on Sports Luxury grade. Both audios have voice recognition and Bluetooth* connectivity, with an AUX mini jack and two USB ports inside the console box. The audio switch panel has been redesigned and integrated with the heater control panel. Interior appearance has been improved by adopting two-tone aluminium knobs, with black alumite around the circumference of the silver-aluminium knobs. The audio panel has a dark smoked finish with resin to adjust the opacity for a 'blackout' impression. Lexus Remote Touch Interface allows for navigation control by both the driver and front passenger, without changing the driving position of the front-facing line of sight. The ENTER function can now be controlled by switches on both sides of the remote-touch unit. A BACK function has been included in front of the remote touch, for greater ease of operation. Lexus RX Luxury and F Sport have 12 speakers, including a 20cm sub-woofer to boost bass tones and CST (Coherent Sound Transducer) technology for high-quality, realistic sound production in the mid to high range. CST technology is used for the speakers at the sides of the instrument panel and these combine with the 18cm woofer in each front door to create a three-way sound structure comprised of low, medium and high-range sounds in the front of the cabin.
33 The TFT liquid-crystal display has high-quality IPS (in-plane switching) and minimal colour variation at different viewing angles, providing a clear image from either front seat. The screen displays rich blacks, and enables a high level of contact and clarity. Flagship Sports Luxury has a 15-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround-sound system. The display screen is 12.3-inch high-definition TFT liquid crystal EMV with high-quality IPS. The landscape-oriented 1280mm by 480mm screen has a 24:9 aspect ratio. The screen contains light-control film with special anti-glare and anti-reflection surface treatments to diffuse reflections and reduce reflected light. The Mark Levinson audio features Clari-Fi (compressed music restoration technology) to optimise frequency characteristics, dynamic range, low-tone tension and detail reproduction of compressed audio sources such as MP3. Green Edge technology uses high-efficiency speakers to double the sound output while using the same energy consumption as conventional speaker technology. #Current navigation mapping database encompasses major capital and primary national road networks and offers some coverage in regional areas. *The Bluetooth word mark is owned by Bluetooth SIG, Inc. Not all devices will be compatible and functionality varies depending on the device. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PIANO MAKERS DELIVER VIRTUOSO PERFORMANCE INSIDE NEW LEXUS RX Lexus' all-new RX luxury SUV will be the first in the brand's line-up to feature an interior finish known as laser cut ornamentation, which evokes the premium finish of high-end pianos. The Japanese luxury marque engaged long-term partner Yamaha to produce the finish, which involves combining a thin veneer of wood and aluminium and then making precision laser cuts through the wood to expose the metal beneath. The result is a striking line design that draws on the sharp contrast between the rich qualities of the wood and the cool appearance of the metal. The effect is heightened by the application of a protective clear coat that is polished to a deep shine for a high quality look and feel.
34 The technique is applied to sapele wood, a material with a distinctive ribbon grain that is also used in the manufacture of grand pianos and guitars. The work can only be completed by skilled craftsmen due to the delicate and vulnerable nature of the wood. The quality of the results can be compared to a pinstripe woven into the material of a tailor-made suit, or a light-capturing design engraved on the surface of a piece of fine crystal. Laser cut ornamentation appears on the high grade Sports Luxury level of all-new RX. The collaboration between Yamaha and Lexus continues a 25-year association that has spanned multiple projects, including supply of high-end, exclusive ornamentation elements for the LS limousine and other models. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RX FEATURES LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM+ The new Lexus RX Line has the Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+) package and a suite of driver-assist technologies. A number of the LSS+ and driver-assist systems share sensors, including millimetre-wave radar for the Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) and All-Speed Active Cruise Control (ACC). LSS+ also includes Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), which combines Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Warning+ (with steering control) and Sway Warning Control. The full LSS+ package is PCS, ACC, LKA and Auto High Beam. Driver-assist technology in new-generation RX Line includes Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross- Traffic Alert, Panoramic View Back Monitor on F Sport and Sports Luxury grades, rear-guide monitor, and clearance and parking sonar. Lane Keeping Assist The Lexus LKA strategy begins with Lane Departure Warning*, which warns the driver if they are veering outside the lane to help avoid a collision. LDW uses a lane recognition camera sensor mounted near the interior mirror to monitor the vehicle's position on the road. A buzzer sounds in the cabin and a warning message is displayed on the multi-information screen when it detects that the vehicle has deviated from its position.
35 Both warnings encourage the driver to correct the vehicle's path. LDW can also operate during rain and when only one side of the road has a line marker. An LDW indicator is shown in the combination meter when it is in operation and its status is shown on the multi-information display. A switch on the steering wheel turns the system on and off. Lane Departure Warning+ adds steering control. If the system determines that the vehicle will deviate from the current lane and the audio-visual warnings have been initiated, it will also apply force to the steering wheel to make a correction and avoid lane departure. The LKA function operates when the All-Speed Active Cruise Control is engaged to assist the driver with some of the steering input required to drive in the current lane. It can operate at speeds down to almost stopping. The driver can use the steering wheel controls to customise the steering assist and centre-trace control. As a driver-assist function, LKA will de-activate when the driver is not steering. The Sway Warning Control (SWC)* function monitors the vehicle's position within the lane and the driver's steering operations to detect sway - which may be the result of driver drowsiness, fatigue, inattention or distraction. If such behaviour is detected, the system will alert the driver by sounding a buzzer and displaying a warning on the MID. The SWC will react to vehicle sway, gentle meandering and abrupt steering operation following a period of less frequent steering input. The SWC function can be deactivated according to driver preference by an on/off switch on the steering wheel and the sensitivity can be customised via the DISP switch. *Lane Departure Warning, Lane Departure Warning+ and Sway Warning Control are driver assist devices only and should not be used as a substitute for safe driving practices. Driver should continue to monitor the road. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY SYSTEMS The new RX Line has top-level active and passive safety features, including 10 SRS airbags, All- Speed Active Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and the Lexus Pre-Collision Safety
36 System (PCS) on all models. Lexus LKA made its Australian debut in September 2015 on the ES and IS Lines. The 10 SRS airbags include dual-stage twin-chamber driver and front-passenger airbags, driver and front-passenger knee airbags, and rear-seat side airbags. The body structure of new-generation RX Line includes increased use of high-tensile strength and hot-stamped steels up to 980MPa tensile strength, a new construction method for the door surrounds and a high-strength, lightweight aluminium rear-bumper reinforcement. Active safety technology also includes Automatic High Beam, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), rear-guide monitor, clearance and back sonar, and Tyre-Pressure Monitor. The brake-control system is comprehensive, with the electronic safety features of ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, traction control, enhanced vehicle stability control and Hill-start Assist Control. New-generation RX Line's larger footprint on the road, improved suspension and steering, and improved braking feel further add to active safety. In addition, RX Line now has LED daytime running lamps and heated exterior mirrors on all models. F Sport and Sports Luxury models have Adaptive Variable Suspension, with special features to enhance vehicle responsiveness in potentially hazardous driving situations. The Lexus BSM* uses two radar sensors to detect other vehicles in either adjacent lane and warn the driver, via illuminating LED indicators in the relevant exterior mirror (at speeds above 40km/h), if there is a vehicle in the 'blind spot' on either side. Lexus RCTA* is designed to provide added safety and driver convenience when backing out of a parking space. It warns the driver of approaching vehicles that may not be visible in either the rear- view camera or door mirrors. RCTA is a further refinement of Lexus' BSM technology, and uses the same radar sensors. All new RX Line models have the combined features of millimetre-wavelength radar ACC and the latest-generation PCS. The new PCS* includes a more powerful Pre-Collision Brake Assist function and Pre-Collision Brake, which will automatically apply the brakes to slow the vehicle if the system determines that the vehicle is in a potential collision situation. * Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Pre-Collision Safety System are driver assist technologies and should not be used in place of safe driving and parking practices. Drivers should continue to monitor road ahead.

    1 2015 Lexus RXLine Press Kit 23/11/2015 LEXUS LAUNCHES ALL-NEW FOURTH GENERATION RX SUV Lexus has launched the all-new fourth generation of the luxury marque's renowned RX midsize luxury SUV. The new RX brings a host of new features to market including a bold new exterior styling package with Lexus-first styling cues and a redesigned luxury cabin. It combines this dynamic new appearance with focused on-road performance and new safety technologies, including the new Lexus Safety System+ package on all variants. It is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor with improved handling, ride and steering. Lexus Australia offers the widest choice of any Lexus market in the world, with the local model line- up featuring RX 200t, RX 350 and RX 450h variants in varying grade levels. RX 200t is powered by Lexus' new turbocharged four cylinder powerplant, which develops 175kW and 350Nm and drives the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. RX 200t is available in Luxury grade and can be specified with multiple enhancement packs that offer additional luxury, convenience and safety features. RX 350 features an upgraded 3.5-litre direct injection V6 that develops 221kW and 370Nm - 15kW and 24Nm more than the previous generation - and drives all four wheels via an eight-speed transmission. RX 350 is available in Luxury, F Sport or Sports Luxury grade levels. The RX 450h hybrid develops 230kW combined system power (engine and electric motor) - a 10kW increase in combined system power over the previous generation RX 450h - and drives all four wheels via a CVT transmission. Lexus RX 400h, launched in September 2006, was the country's first petrol-electric hybrid SUV. Convenience and luxury features in the RX Line range from the first-in-category rear-view camera in 2003 to a power-closing tailgate in 2006 and the debut of Lexus Remote Touch three years later. Safety advances through the years include the introduction of a breakthrough 18-litre driver's knee airbag in 2003 and Vehicle Dynamic integrated Management (VDiM) with steering torque assist in 2006. Lexus RX 300, launched in Japan and the US in 1998, is credited with creating a new category of car-based luxury sport vehicles.

    3 It was designedto combine the refinement of a luxury car with the high driving position and versatility of four-wheel drive technology. The second-generation luxury sport RX 330 V6 was released in Australia in April 2003 with immediate success, becoming Australia's most popular luxury SUV and setting the benchmark for refinement, build quality and safety. RX would go on to be Lexus' most successful model globally. Leading-edge features included sequential-shift automatic transmission and an advanced 4WD system using traction control hardware and software to control the centre differential and distribute torque to the four wheels. Passive safety equipment included intelligent multi-stage drive and passenger SRS airbags, large- size TAP (Thorax-Abdomen-Pelvis) front-seat side SRS airbags, full-length curtain-shield SRS airbags and a breakthrough 18-litre driver's knee airbag. The RX 330 also had first-in-category (luxury sports) Lexus rear view camera, a power-closing tailgate and a versatile 40/20/40 split multi-adjustable rear seat. The Sports Luxury grade featured an 11-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and touch-screen satellite navigation^. Lexus repowered the RX in March 2006 with a 3.5-litre dual-VVT-i engine, making RX 350 Australia's most powerful six-cylinder 4WD in its class at 203kW (an increase of 18 per cent over RX 330). Flowdown technology included the Adaptive Front Lighting System (headlamps that swivel to 'see around corners') and Bluetooth* technology from flagship LS 430. MP3 and WMA compatibility was now available, and the CD/DVD player in the Sports Luxury model could play DVDs when the vehicle was stationary. Audio head-unit innovations also included DVD-based satnav, a high-res seven-inch LCD touch screen and voice recognition for Bluetooth hands-free telephone communications. In September 2006 Lexus launched Australia's first hybrid petrol-electric luxury SUV, RX 400h. It had official ADR fuel economy of 8.1 litres/100km# and was rated in the US as a SULVE (Super Low Emissions Vehicle). Technology included a new E-four drive system to drive the rear axle as required and VDiM with the added feature of steering torque assist. An all-new Lexus RX 350 was launched in February 2009.

    4 Its new exteriorreduced the coefficient of drag to 0.33 and fuel economy was improved by seven per cent. Driveline innovations included a six-speed sequential transmission for the first time and a new AWD system. There were a raft of interior improvements, including the new Lexus Remote Touch navigation system and more powerful climate control for greater occupant comfort. Safety developments included availability of the Pre-Collision Safety System, a rear camera on all models, wide-view side camera, parking sensors and an upgrade to the VDiM. Four months later Lexus Australia launched the new RX 450h, with the first production Atkinson cycle V6 hybrid engine. Petrol engine capacity had increased from 3.3 to 3.5 litres, but the new engine helped cut fuel consumption to 6.4 litres/100km and CO2 emissions to 150g/km#, cutting-edge figures for a luxury SUV. Lexus RX 450h also featured a class-leading 10 SRS airbags. A restyled RX Line appeared in June 2012, with a bold spindle grille, improved chassis dynamics and F Sport models for the first time. Lexus also introduced a third powertrain, the new RX 270 model. Chassis improvements increased steering response and driver enjoyment across the range, while new features included daytime running lamps, a new generation push-to-enter Lexus Remote Touch controller and DAB+ digital radio^^ as standard equipment. RX 200t produces 175kW and 350Nm of torque; a substantial 38kW increase in power and a full 100Nm more torque than the naturally aspirated four cylinder engine it replaces in RX 270. Its torque figure is even higher than that of the previous generation RX 350. The turbo powerplant also produces more power than the 2.0-litre turbo engine in the Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI Quattro, and more power and torque than the two-litre four cylinder turbo engine of BMW X3 xDrive20i and X4 xDrive20i. Power and fuel efficiency have been improved for all models, highlighted by a 39 per cent improvement in torque and 27 per cent power increase over the superseded model for the entry level RX 200t. The turbocharged petrol 8AR-FTS engine in new RX 200t delivers 175kW of power from 4800 to 5600rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1650 to 4000rpm. Fuel economy is 16 per cent better than the superseded RX 270 at 8.1 litres/100km on the ADR 81/02 combined cycle*. The new RX 350 has seven per cent more power and four per cent more torque, while returning 11 per cent greater fuel economy. RX 350's new-generation 2GR-FKS engine has 221kW of power at 6300rpm and 370Nm of torque at 4700rpm, with combined cycle fuel economy of 9.6 litres/100km*. Hybrid RX 450h has 10kW or 4.5 per cent more combined power, at 230kW, coupled with a 9.5 per cent fuel economy improvement to 5.7 litres/100km*. * Fuel consumption varies depending on driving conditions / style, vehicle conditions and options / accessories.     12 The new LexusRX 200t has an innovative turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with a Stop & Start system and the ability to operate on both the fuel-saving Atkinson cycle and the conventional Otto cycle. The late intake valve closing of the Atkinson cycle reduces pumping losses and boosts fuel economy. The turbo engine is matched to an electronically controlled sequential-shift six-speed automatic transmission and front-drive via a pre-load differential. The automatic transmission has cutting-edge Lexus electronic control technology, including G- Sensor Sports AI-Shift control. Special attention was paid during the Lexus 8AR-FTS engine development program to minimising turbo 'lag', including the use of a twin-scroll turbocharger and mounting the intercooler to the engine to minimise the intake volume downstream of the turbocharger to optimise response. Breakthrough features include an integrated cylinder head and four-into-two exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger, and the latest iteration of the Lexus intelligent variable valve timing system, known as VVT-iW ('W' for wide). The wider range of inlet timing variation in the VVT-iW system means the RX 200t engine can switch instantly between Atkinson and Otto cycles, according to vehicle operating conditions. Lexus has previously used the Atkinson combustion cycle exclusively in hybrid-model petrol engines. The 8AR-FTS engine also has the latest Lexus fuel injection system, known as ESTEC D-4ST (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) and an air-to-liquid intercooler. The D-4ST system splits injection between high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port injection according to driving conditions, providing optimum combustion at all times. Integrated systems Lexus has combined the cylinder head, exhaust manifold and intercooler with variable waste-gate control to optimise low-speed torque and fuel economy, while meeting strict emission requirements. Active waste-gate control minimises pumping losses by reducing back pressure during low engine load. The VVT-iW system optimises torque throughout the engine revolution range. It allows the engine to start in the Otto cycle and run in the more fuel efficient Atkinson cycle when required. The VVT-iW system has a mid-position lock to enable Atkinson cycle to be maintained without sacrificing starting performance in cold weather and also to deliver Wide Open Throttle performance.

    13 Advanced features The RX200t engine is cast with low nickel content, heat-resistant steel. Cooling oil jets under the pistons improve durability and enhance warm-up performance. Twin balance shafts with resin gears minimise engine vibration to improve cabin comfort - a marked improvement in four-cylinder engine technology. Further measures to reduce noise, vibration and harshness 'at the source' include an electric air bypass valve and a resonator in the intake system, to reduce the characteristic 'turbo sigh' when the throttle is closed. Sequential-shift transmission Lexus RX 200t has a sequential-shift six-speed automatic transmission. Sequential shifting can be initiated via the gear lever on the steering wheel. The U661 transaxle makes RX 200t only the second Lexus to be compatible with the Stop & Start engine system. A compact, lightweight, ultra-low-noise electrically driven oil pump supplies pressure to the start-off clutch, so the transmission is ready to operate before the engine starts. The oil-pump was specially engineered for low noise, as it continues to operate when the engine is stopped. The U661 transaxle networks with the turbocharged engine to achieve a balance of boost pressure, for improved performance and fuel economy. Features of the new transaxle include a specialised torque converter to complement the turbo engine, low-loss friction materials, a low-loss thrust bearing and low-loss fluid-pressure control system. The RX 200t's transaxle is an evolution of the U660 transmission proven in other Lexus models. It is a lightweight, compact unit with an impressive array of electronic-control features designed to provide smooth shifting and acceleration, optimum fuel economy and response, and sporting driving performance. Fuel-saving features include flexible torque-converter lock-up control from second to sixth gear. Sport AI shift control Lexus Sport AI (artificial intelligence) shift control is a transmission algorithm designed to manage the shift regime according to road conditions and driver intention, thereby optimising the characteristics of the turbo engine.

    14 It includes Driver-intentionControl, Sudden Braking Downshift Control and G-AI Shift Control. Driver-intention Control monitors accelerator usage and vehicle condition to provide gear shift patterns that suit sporty driving. G-AI Shift Control uses G-sensor information to help set up for a corner and ensure optimum response when re-acceleration occurs. It combines the RX 200t features of Drive Mode Select (DMS) and the new G-sensor when the transmission is in D (automatic) mode. The system selects the most suitable gear for sporting driving by monitoring the status of the vehicle's G sensor, with shifting selection biased towards the lower gears to draw out the full potential of the turbocharged engine. When entering a corner in the D range with SPORT mode selected, the vehicle condition is determined using information gathered from the G-sensor and driver operations, and the transmission downshifts to the optimum gear. While cornering, the gear is held to enable powerful acceleration at the corner exit. Powertrain Cooperative Control Powertrain Cooperative Control uses information based on driver operations, vehicle condition and driving environment to match engine and transmission settings and optimise driveability. In DMS SPORT mode, the targeted drive force and gear range are set according to accelerator pedal angle to provide a sportier driving experience and acceleration from the turbo engine. Weights and measures The Lexus turbo engine weighs just 160kg and was bench-tested for more than 10,000 hours before extensive on-road testing began, covering more than one million kilometres. The Lexus turbo spins to 180,000rpm. Lexus developed a new 0-20W viscosity lubricating oil without calcium content to remove the chance of engine knock at low engine revolutions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TURBO RX HAS STOP & START TECHNOLOGY The new RX 200t turbo adopts the fuel-saving Lexus Stop & Start engine system. The breakthrough Stop & Start system for the Lexus turbocharged petrol engine made its Australian debut in February 2015 on NX 200t.

    15 The Lexus systemdelays engine start-up until the accelerator pedal is activated to maximise fuel savings; many other start and stop systems restart the engine when the brake pedal is released. Intensive development work with the Lexus turbo 8AR-FTS engine's direct-injection technology allows a firing stroke to commence in less than half a crankshaft revolution, providing quicker response. The turbo engine's bespoke D-4S system can inject fuel into the one cylinder while that cylinder is stopped on its compression stroke, allowing ignition and combustion to occur simultaneously to quickly re-start the engine. For added safety and convenience, Lexus Stop & Start operates simultaneously with the Brake Hold function and RX 200t's all-speed active cruise control system. Lexus RX 200t's engine stops automatically while the vehicle is stationary, such as at traffic lights and in heavy traffic. The engine re-starts when the accelerator pedal is depressed and the Brake Hold function is automatically cancelled. A high-performance battery and high-precision battery sensor optimise power supply performance, enabling the engine to be stopped for longer periods. If the Active Cruise Control is in use, the engine stops when the vehicle stops (even if the brake pedal is not activated) and re-starts when the preceding vehicle starts off. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RX 350 AND RX 450h FEATURE UPGRADED POWERTRAINS The powertrains on all-new RX 350 and RX 450h have received a range of enhancements to improve performance and efficiency. RX 350 features a new specification 3.5-litre quad cam V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission with M Mode, for improved driveability and fuel economy. The new Lexus 2GR-FKS engine has 14kW more power and 14Nm more torque than the superseded dual VVT-i 2GR-FE engine. The 2GR-FKS engine has the additional features of VVT-iW (Wide) on the inlet camshaft and the Lexus D-4S dual injection system of high-pressure direct injection and port injection. It is the first Lexus engine to combine VVT-iW and D-4S.

    16 The continuously variablevalve timing VVT-iW system is shared with the new turbocharged 8AR- FTS engine. Its greater range of adjustment means the valve timing can be advanced for greater performance or retarded, so the engine operates in the high expansion-ratio Atkinson cycle for greater economy. The result is higher torque throughout the engine revolution range. Fuel economy has been optimised by paying careful attention to the balance between direct and port injection, according to engine load and operating conditions. The Lexus VVT-iW system adjusts the inlet timing to ensure reliable engine start in conditions of extreme cold and impressive wide-open throttle (WOT) performance. Centre-spool type control has been adopted for the VVT actuation, with the oil-control valve built into the VVT system to shorten the oil path - enhancing responsiveness and operability in cold conditions. There is a mid-position lock on the intake system VVT. Lexus designed the 2GR-FKS engine and the latest RX 450h 2GR-FXS engine using computer- aided engineering rigidity analysis for key components such as the cylinder block, oil pan and timing-chain cover to suppress noise and vibration at high engine output and high injection- pressure scenarios. The rigidity of the chain case and cylinder head cover has been optimised to reduce noise transmission from the valvetrain parts and high-pressure fuel pump. A sound and heat-insulating engine cover has been adopted for the new-generation V6 engines. Lexus RX 350 F Sport has the additional feature of an optimally tuned sound generator with three resonance frequencies for a powerful and distinctive Lexus intake sound. Eight-speed transmission New-generation RX 350 has an eight-speed sequential-shift transmission in lieu of the previous six-speed transmission, for added driver involvement, driveability and fuel economy. New electronic control technology further adds to driveability. F Sport models have paddle shifters on the steering wheel and paddle shift-shift control in D-range to downshift for corners or in preparation for acceleration. All models have Drive Mode Select, with three mode settings on Luxury and five on Sports Luxury and F Sport grades. The eight internal ratios have been chosen to balance the needs of sports driving and fuel economy - with a low first gear ratio for initial acceleration, closely spaced ratios in the intermediate gears for performance and urban-driving economy, and a tall eighth-gear ratio for motorway economy. The overall spread of ratios is 44 per cent greater than the superseded six-speed transmission. First gear is 20 per cent shorter than the ratio in the Lexus six-speed transmission and top gear is 16 per cent taller. The internal ratios are: first, 5.250; second, 3.028; third, 1.950; fourth, 1.456; fifth, 1.220 sixth, 1.000; seventh, 0.808; eighth, 0.673 and reverse, 4.014; and the final-drive ratio is 3.329:1. The U881F transmission can be used in D (automatic) or M mode, for a direct and sporty driving feel. The M mode provides full torque-converter lock-up from third to eighth gears for 'clutchless' manual shifting when accelerating and lock-up from second to eighth gears when decelerating. Down changes in M mode are made with the transmission's throttle blipping control matching the engine speed to the gear. In addition, the RX 350 transmission is linked to the Lexus Drive Mode Select function, with its ECO, NORMAL and SPORT modes on Luxury and the addition of SPORT S and SPORT S+ on Sports Luxury and F Sport. NORMAL mode provides the fuel economy and seamless acceleration traditionally associated with a Lexus electronically-controlled transmission. It uses the eight ratios for optimum fuel economy while coordinating control with the throttle to provide smooth acceleration with minimum feeling of gear changes. SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes include newly adopted G-sensor AI-Shift Control, which uses information from the G-sensor on driving status to provide the optimal gear ratio for performance driving. The system selects the suitable gear for sporting driving by monitoring the status of the vehicle's G- sensor, with shifting selection biased towards the lower gears to draw out the full potential of the 3.5-litre engine. The transmission uses G-sensor information to automatically downshift during hard braking to set up for a corner, hold a lower gear through the corner for greater control, and then give the driver a greater power response on corner exit by selecting a suitably low gear. In 'Sport M' transmission mode - which the driver selects by moving the shift lever to M while in the

    18 SPORT drive modes- the vehicle can be driven with the feeling of a manual transmission. The Lexus transmission software also monitors throttle opening to provide the acceleration the driver requires, in a system known as Linear Drive-force Management. It can initiate a quick downshift depending on throttle position to ensure responsive re-acceleration out of a corner or a quick upshift to maintain momentum. This minimises the variation in acceleration rate as vehicle speed increases, for a continuous acceleration feeling. Another control technology, Downshift Control, ensures that downshifting response matches driver intention. It prioritises the time taken for the drive force to reach the final gear step when the throttle pedal is pressed sharply, while sequence downshift control prioritises smooth transfer of drive force when the accelerator pedal is pressed slowly. RX 350 F Sport models have paddle shifters that can also be used in D (automatic) mode to initiate downshifts. This feature, known as 'temporary sequential mode', helps the driver set up for a corner or simply slow the vehicle in a low-speed zone. The current gear can be seen in the Multi Information Display (MID). The transmission returns to normal operation from temporary sequential mode when the vehicle stops, is driven at a constant speed for more than one minute (in fourth gear or above) or the driver holds the up-shift paddle. RX 450h: Improved performance and efficiency The new-generation hybrid Lexus RX 450h has improved performance and fuel economy, and reduced emissions. Lexus has made driveability, efficiency and packaging improvements throughout the RX 450h driveline and hybrid system. The new 2GR-FXS 3.5-litre Atkinson cycle quad cam dual VVT-i V6 petrol engine has an additional 18Nm of torque (at lower revolutions) and 10kW more power than the previous engine. The petrol engine delivers 193kW of power at 6000rpm and 335Nm of torque at 4600rpm. The Lexus hybrid system blends that power with the 123kW front electric motor and, when required, the 50kW motor in the E-Four AWD system. RX 450h has an all-gear electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, for ideal gearing at all times and no energy loss through slippage.

    19 The new engineadopts the Lexus D-4S dual injection system of high-pressure direct and port injection. The compression ratio has been raised from 12.5:1 to 13.0:1 for improved power and torque throughout the revolution range. The intake ports and combustion chambers have been redesigned to increase the degree of mixture tumbling and improve combustion. The cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has been further refined to improve thermal efficiency and reduce emissions. The cylinder head and exhaust manifold have been integrated, to expand the driving range of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and reduce emissions. Special attention was paid to minimising NVH, both at the source and through new engine covers. CAE analysis of major components has helped suppress noise from high engine output and cylinder pressures, while new designs for the cam-chain case and engine cover suppress noise from the valvetrain and high-pressure fuel pump. A new heat and sound-insulating resin engine cover has been adopted. The 2GR-FXS engine stops when not required to propel the vehicle and electric motor power is used for reversing. The electronically controlled VVT-i system has a default setting to allow for easier and smoother petrol-engine restarting. Special features in the RX 450h design minimise power-drain on the petrol engine to maximise fuel savings while also allowing vital systems to operate when the petrol engine is stopped. The vehicle has electric power-assisted steering and an electric-powered air conditioning compressor. The RX 450h engine does not have a conventional alternator or starter motor. A DC-DC converter supplies 14V power for the RX 450h ancillaries. The number one motor-generator in the RX 450h hybrid transaxle acts as the petrol-engine starter motor when required. Enhanced transaxle Lexus RX 450h's P313 transaxle has been improved to increase fuel efficiency. It has a newly adopted water-to-air cooler for the electric drive motor and reduced oil agitation

The unique RX 450h front-axle driveline consists of a V6 petrol engine, transmission damper, compound set of planetary gears and two electric motors/generators. The compound planetary gear set acts as an electronic continuously variable transmission, changing the transmission ratio for optimum performance, driveability and economy. State-of-the-art transmission electronics include the Lexus AI Shift and the Lexus Sequential Shiftmatic System. The sequential shift system allows the driver to select from six gear ranges by moving the shift lever from D to S and shifting between the '+' or '-' symbols. Mechanical connection The Lexus Hybrid Drive in RX 450h has as its mechanical heart a compound set of planetary gears. The two sets of gears combine to perform three roles. One set acts as a motor-speed reduction device for the electric drive motor, and the other as a power-split device, dividing petrol engine power between the generator and the front wheels. Collectively, they act as an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT). The E-CVT smoothly adjusts the engine output speed and the front motor speed to provide drive to the front wheels. The use of planetary gears to perform two roles provides a significant saving in weight and space under the bonnet compared with either a traditional automatic transmission or a belt-and-pulley type CVT. Engine power can be transmitted to the front axle via the mechanical path and the electrical path, or a mixture of both. Some of the engine's power output is transmitted to the electric motor via the generator, as supplementary power for vehicle acceleration. As well as propelling the vehicle, the Lexus Hybrid Drive system allows for energy-saving regenerative braking on both the front and rear axles. Hybrid system improvements Lexus has further refined the power control unit (PCU), hybrid battery and hybrid system electronic control unit in RX 450h for improved driveability, fuel economy, HV performance and interior

    21 comfort. The PCU motorcontrol and DC-DC control have been optimised to improve fuel economy and reduce NVH. The hybrid-system battery case and wiring harness have been redesigned for greater package efficiency. The installation position of the battery cooling blower has been changed and the height of the main body lowered by 20mm, allowing for increased rear seat cushion thickness and greater comfort. A pulse-type blower has been adopted to reduce noise. Improvements to the hybrid system ECU include petrol-engine control and HV power management. Driving performance and driver friendliness have been improved under acceleration and deceleration. When accelerating, the power mode emphasises performance by making better use of petrol engine power and the mid-range acceleration contribution from the electric-drive motor. When decelerating, the rate of retardation and the engine sound have been tuned to give a sporty driving feel. The sequential shift feature can be used to downshift the transmission for the optimum feeling of engine braking and to set up for a corner. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEXUS RX LINE HAS TWO AWD SYSTEMS Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h use bespoke all-wheel drive systems, both designed to maximise traction, cornering stability and driver control while saving fuel. RX 350 has the new-generation Dynamic Torque Control system and RX 450h has an improved Lexus E-Four system. In a Lexus first, RX 350 and RX 450h drivers can view the torque distribution in real time on the multi-information display.     22 The compact, lightweightLexus Dynamic Torque Control system uses information on vehicle speed, steering and throttle angles, and yaw rate to control torque distribution automatically between the front and rear axles. It saves fuel by driving only the front wheels when the vehicle is cruising, switching to AWD when needed via an electromagnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential housing. Pre-torque control can direct 10 per cent of the available torque to the rear wheels as soon as the driver starts to turn the steering wheel, such as when entering a corner. Yaw-rate feedback control can feed additional torque to the rear wheels every six milliseconds, ensuring an ideal torque split - up to a maximum of 50 per cent. When moving from standstill on slippery roads, it distributes torque to the rear wheels within the range of 100:0 to 50:50 for optimum stability based on available traction. Normal driving control will resume when the vehicle's speed reaches 25km/h. Rear-drive torque is disengaged when brake control systems such as ABS or vehicle stability control (VSC) are in operation, to prevent interference with these functions. The driver can manually override the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system at speeds up to 40km/h by pushing the AWD LOCK button to achieve maximum all-wheel grip. The RX 350 VSC can use the new AWD system to control the front-rear torque split if operating conditions require. For example, sudden acceleration of any vehicle during cornering can cause a driven wheel to start spinning, which in turn could cause the front or rear wheels to skid, resulting in a loss of control. The AWD system controls torque distribution to ensure RX 350 follows the driver's intended line to improve initial turn-in when cornering. If the VSC detects approaching oversteer, rear-wheel torque is reduced. If approaching understeer is detected, rear-wheel torque is increased. Lexus E-Four The Lexus E-Four proactive all-wheel drive system uses an electric motor to drive the rear axle while the front axle can be propelled by petrol or electric power, or a mixture of both. New-generation RX 450h has an improved E-Four system, with a three-shaft configuration to reduce the number of parts and improve package efficiency by reducing the spacing between the input and output shaft. Rear electric motor control functions have been improved to optimise turning performance as the vehicle accelerates through a corner.

    23 The E-Four systemcase and cover are now made from aluminium to reduce weight. The Lexus E-Four system can vary torque distribution to the rear wheels, depending on driving dynamics and road conditions. It provides a level of start-off stability and acceleration on snow-covered or other slippery road surfaces that is appropriate for all-wheel drive models. E-Four saves energy and therefore fuel because the vehicle only uses all-wheel drive when it is needed - for example, in response to a loss of front-wheel traction. If the system detects loss of traction in the front wheels, it reduces the electricity supply to the traction motor in the transaxle and increases supply to the rear-axle motor. The rear motor can act as a generator when the vehicle is in regenerative braking mode, increasing the amount of vehicle kinetic energy recovered when it decelerates. The new E-Four system has situation-specific control features, including an improved yaw-rate control system for enhanced driving performance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEXUS RX LINE HAS PRE-LOAD DIFFERENTIAL Lexus has adopted a pre-load differential on every RX model to improve driveability. It provides enhanced steering feel and greater ease of control under acceleration and deceleration in a wide variety of driving and road conditions. The pre-load differential facilitates smoother control during take-off and improved low-speed manoeuvrability when turning on normal or slippery road surfaces. When driving at a constant speed in a straight line on a motorway, the device delivers a more stable feeling when the steering wheel is in the neutral position. On gravel or rough road surfaces the new differential acts to increase straight-line stability. The key component of the pre-load differential is a conical spring between the differential case and the side gear. It applies preload in the differential case during light loads and at low differential revolutions, providing torque to limit the speed difference between the driven wheels.

    24 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW RX HASIMPROVED RIDE AND HANDLING The new-generation Lexus RX Line has improved handling, ride and steering response. Lexus has redesigned the RX body structure to improve rigidity and provide a stable platform for the vehicle's improved suspension. The new RX has a larger footprint on the road, providing increased stability. The wheelbase has been increased by 50mm, and track by 10mm front and rear. Lexus RX Line has MacPherson-strut front suspension and trailing-arm double-wishbone rear suspension. The rear suspension has short coil springs and separate dampers to maintain a low floor line and optimise cabin space. The suspension and RX's electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering have been improved and recalibrated. Special aerodynamic features on the body and underbody optimise handling stability and straight- line stability at motorway speeds. RX 350 and RX 450h F Sport and Sports Luxury models have the additional feature of Active Variable Suspension. Lexus has comprehensively redesigned the RX body to optimise safety and body rigidity. High-strength and hot stamp steel sheet up to 980MPa tensile strength have been adopted, along with special techniques to strengthen key panel joints - additional spot welds, greater use of body adhesive and Lexus-developed laser-screw welding. Improvements have been made to the rigidity of the cowl and connection between the front- suspension towers and between the rear-wheel housings, as well as the door frames, back-door opening and rear body frame. Examples include the new annular construction for the door surrounds and the new rear-body frame construction, which increases rigidity while reducing weight. The new rear body design suppresses deformation of the rear-door opening and disperses input from the rear suspension into the rear quarter pillar and rear pillar.

    25 Improvements to RXLine's front suspension include a new, large diameter stabiliser bar to increase front roll stability and minimise roll when cornering. The stabiliser-bar bushings now have internal rings to optimise stabiliser-bar effectiveness and initial steering response. Changes to the stabiliser bar mean the front spring rate can be reduced, to optimise ride comfort, while reducing roll when turning. Softer front bound-stopper characteristics have been adopted to provide a more natural roll posture when cornering. Roll stability has been increased by 10 per cent. New-generation hub bearings increase front-axle stability and therefore vehicle stability in corners. The rear suspension has been optimised to ensure a firm suspension feel and excellent steering response. Special attention was paid to the bushing rigidity of the lower number-one arm on both the body and carrier sides. RX Line's ride comfort has been further improved by the increase in wheelbase, and a reduction in vertical body movement over both hard and soft bumps. The steering hardware in RX Line has been optimised, to deliver improved steering response and steering feel. The rigidity of the intermediate shaft and instrument-panel reinforcements have been increased to reduce localised deflection. The steering-gear ratio has been revised and the electric power-assistance curve recalibrated to offer excellent stability while providing quicker steering response. The steering-feel target was agility and feedback for smooth corner entry, ease of maintaining steering angle when deeper into the corner, and slower steering-wheel return speed for good controllability on corner exit. RX Line F Sport models have a unique EPS steering calibration. The RX Line braking system has been refined for improved pedal feel on petrol models. All models have new ventilated rear brakes, with 338mm by 18mm disc rotors with floating callipers replacing the previous 309mm by 10mm solid discs and fixed callipers.     26 natural transition betweenregenerative and friction braking. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AVS SYSTEM DEBUTS ON RX LINE The new RX 350 and RX 450h F Sport and Sports Luxury grades have, for the first time, the added comfort and flat-ride stability of Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). AVS electronically controls and monitors all four dampers simultaneously to suit certain conditions and driving preferences. It increases ride comfort when driving on rough roads by lowering the damping force, but can also deliver a sporting drive with greater response and handling stability by increasing the damping force when SPORT S+ mode is engaged via Drive Mode Select. RX Line has the latest Lexus AVS iteration, with linear-solenoid actuators and 30 levels of damping-force switching in lieu of nine in previous generations, providing more precise control. In new RX the actuators are located on the lower side of the damper body - below the spring in the case of the front dampers. The RX Line designers specified this location, instead of the traditional actuator location on top of the dampers, to lower the bonnet line and maximise cargo space. AVS also interacts with RX Line's Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS)/Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+), optimising damper rates to prepare the vehicle during potentially hazardous driving situations. For example, AVS will increase front damper force to prevent dive during emergency braking. It also monitors steering operations and road conditions, and adjusts the dampers to suit - monitoring inputs on vehicle posture including roll, dive and squat. AVS provides distinct advantages in the following conditions: Rough surfaces Switches to a lower damping force (oil moves through the dampers quickly) to help absorb vibrations for a smoother ride. Heavy braking or hard acceleration Damping force is increased (less oil is allowed to move through the damper) for ideal vehicle composure when the vehicle pitches forward or back. This is detected from the brake/accelerator pedal (not just from vehicle angle sensors) to ensure early AVS reaction.

The AVS system has the following damping force controls: Vehicle speed sensing control Controls damping force in accordance with vehicle speed to help achieve both ride comfort at low speed and handling stability at high speed. Roll attitude control Based on signal input from steering, yaw rate and linear G sensors, the system controls damping forces on all four wheels to maintain optimum vehicle attitude during cornering. Anti-dive control The system predicts that the vehicle will pitch forward due to brake operation based on the pressure in the brake master cylinder, and maintains a higher damping force. This moderates the speed at which the vehicle pitches forward, helping ensure ride comfort and handling stability. Anti-squat control This feature predicts a squat condition due to acceleration, based on output torque signals from the engine control computer or the HV control computer, and increases damping force. This reduces the amount of vehicle attitude change, helping ensure excellent ride comfort and handling stability. Rebound control Based on signals from a vertical G sensor, oscillations are detected in the directions of heave, roll and pitch due to inputs from the road surface. By controlling damping force on all four wheels, rebound is naturally smoothed down to ensure excellent ride comfort. Ruggedness-sensing control Low damping force is maintained when rough vibration is sensed by the vertical G sensor output while driving over irregular road surfaces. This lessens the transmission of vibrations to the cabin to provide a more comfortable ride. Unsprung mass vibration control damping A higher damper force is maintained when unsprung resonance is detected, based on speed- sensor signal output, thereby ensuring optimum road holding with no loss of ride comfort (unsprung mass being the mass of the brakes, suspension and wheels). VSC Cooperative Control Appropriate damping force is exerted in response to vehicle side skid and friction coefficient changes in the road surface, based on damping force and cooperative control signals from the skid control computer, thereby ensuring the VSC effect. Front-seat heating and ventilation has been improved, with greater wiring density for the heater elements and double air flow for the ventilators. The new seat-back frame construction helps boost RX Line's rear-seat knee room to 38mm. New seat cushion and seat-back shapes enhance support for the pelvis while increasing the feeling of integration with the vehicle. The seat strap position has been revised, bringing the cushion shape closer to that of the human body when the seat is occupied. The lower seat-back bulges out, creating a better pelvic angle for comfortable support. Cushion shape and firmness have been optimised to prevent fatigue on long drives. The angle of the seat cushion between the hip point and the lower thigh has been increased by 8.4 degrees to 19.4 degrees, enhancing occupant holding and reducing slippage for reduced fatigue. Seat-adjustment range has been increased with a 15mm expansion of the downwards adjustment range, giving a total of 60mm lifter adjustment. RX Line has a 10-way adjustable driver's seat in Luxury and F Sport models, and 14-way front adjustment in Sports Luxury models, including power adjustment in key areas. The rear seat has also been redesigned for greater comfort and convenience. The seat-back bolster angle has been increased by five degrees to 40 degrees, for improved holding performance. Luxury and F Sport models have a 40/20/40 split manual reclining and folding rear seat, with a recliner damper for more gentle movement when reclining the seat back. Sports Luxury grades have a power reclining and folding 60/40 split rear seat with seat heaters. The seat can be reclined by using switches on the sides of the seat. It can also be folded by using switches on the sides of the seat, the driver's seat and inside the luggage compartment. All RX models have Lexus Drive Mode Select, with the controller on the centre console. The switch controls the various drive modes and allows the driver to customise the Adaptive Variable Suspension on F Sport and Sports Luxury models.

The audio panel has a dark smoked finish with resin to adjust the opacity for a 'blackout' impression. Lexus Remote Touch Interface allows for navigation control by both the driver and front passenger, without changing the driving position of the front-facing line of sight. The ENTER function can now be controlled by switches on both sides of the remote-touch unit. A BACK function has been included in front of the remote touch, for greater ease of operation. Lexus RX Luxury and F Sport have 12 speakers, including a 20cm sub-woofer to boost bass tones and CST (Coherent Sound Transducer) technology for high-quality, realistic sound production in the mid to high range. CST technology is used for the speakers at the sides of the instrument panel and these combine with the 18cm woofer in each front door to create a three-way sound structure comprised of low, medium and high-range sounds in the front of the cabin.

The Japanese luxury marque engaged long-term partner Yamaha to produce the finish, which involves combining a thin veneer of wood and aluminium and then making precision laser cuts through the wood to expose the metal beneath. The result is a striking line design that draws on the sharp contrast between the rich qualities of the wood and the cool appearance of the metal. The effect is heightened by the application of a protective clear coat that is polished to a deep shine for a high quality look and feel.

A number of the LSS+ and driver-assist systems share sensors, including millimetre-wave radar for the Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) and All-Speed Active Cruise Control (ACC). LSS+ also includes Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), which combines Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Warning+ (with steering control) and Sway Warning Control. A buzzer sounds in the cabin and a warning message is displayed on the multi-information screen when it detects that the vehicle has deviated from its position.

    35 Both warnings encouragethe driver to correct the vehicle's path. LDW can also operate during rain and when only one side of the road has a line marker. An LDW indicator is shown in the combination meter when it is in operation and its status is shown on the multi-information display. A switch on the steering wheel turns the system on and off. Lane Departure Warning+ adds steering control. If the system determines that the vehicle will deviate from the current lane and the audio-visual warnings have been initiated, it will also apply force to the steering wheel to make a correction and avoid lane departure. The LKA function operates when the All-Speed Active Cruise Control is engaged to assist the driver with some of the steering input required to drive in the current lane. It can operate at speeds down to almost stopping. The driver can use the steering wheel controls to customise the steering assist and centre-trace control. As a driver-assist function, LKA will de-activate when the driver is not steering. The Sway Warning Control (SWC)* function monitors the vehicle's position within the lane and the driver's steering operations to detect sway - which may be the result of driver drowsiness, fatigue, inattention or distraction. If such behaviour is detected, the system will alert the driver by sounding a buzzer and displaying a warning on the MID. The SWC will react to vehicle sway, gentle meandering and abrupt steering operation following a period of less frequent steering input. The SWC function can be deactivated according to driver preference by an on/off switch on the steering wheel and the sensitivity can be customised via the DISP switch. *Lane Departure Warning, Lane Departure Warning+ and Sway Warning Control are driver assist devices only and should not be used as a substitute for safe driving practices. F Sport and Sports Luxury models have Adaptive Variable Suspension, with special features to enhance vehicle responsiveness in potentially hazardous driving situations. The Lexus BSM* uses two radar sensors to detect other vehicles in either adjacent lane and warn the driver, via illuminating LED indicators in the relevant exterior mirror (at speeds above 40km/h), if there is a vehicle in the 'blind spot' on either side. Lexus RCTA* is designed to provide added safety and driver convenience when backing out of a parking space. It warns the driver of approaching vehicles that may not be visible in either the rear- view camera or door mirrors. RCTA is a further refinement of Lexus' BSM technology, and uses the same radar sensors. All new RX Line models have the combined features of millimetre-wavelength radar ACC and the latest-generation PCS.
