1) Sam realizes her pet Buzz is missing and frantically searches the house. Unable to find him, she prints and posts missing pet flyers.
2) While posting flyers, Sam sees a pet store and gets a replacement pet that looks similar to Buzz. However, it does not behave the same.
3) Sam's friend Kelly calls and wants to see Buzz. Sam acts nervous, not wanting Kelly to realize it is a different pet. Kelly notices differences in the new pet's markings.
4) On the day Kelly is scheduled to return, the real Buzz appears at the door with Kelly, exposing that Sam had lied and gotten a replacement pet while the original Buzz was still missing.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

FADE IN:
SCENE 1: INT. LOCATION #1 – A LOUNGE.
Inside a lounge. The room is modern, neat and nicely
furnished. A girl is sat on the sofa watching television.
She changes the channel and glances at the clock.
SAM
Buzz? Time for your food!
Silence. She gets up and goes into the kitchen.
SAM (FRANTICALLY)
Buzz?!
She picks up a food packet and rattles it. Silence. She is
confused and begins to become frantic.
SAM
Buzz? Buzz! Where are you?
She searches for the pet. She starts to check everywhere in
the house. She searches under the bed, in the cupboards and
out the door. She is frantic, moving very quickly with an
increasingly concerned expression. She calls his name in
every new location.
SAM (LOUDLY)
Buzz! Where are you?
3. 3
She starts to slow down, looking around the room. There are
multiple framed photos of Kelly with the pet, highlighting
her love for her pet. Sam takes it in with dread. She then
makes up her mind and gets on the computer. She types
something, prints it, gets in the car and drives away.
SCENE 2: EXT. LOCATION #2 – STREET.
On a street. Sam is attaching a MISSING poster onto a
nearby telephone pole. She repeats this a few times. She
runs out of paper and sighs in defeat, sitting down on a
bench. As she’s sat down she notices a glowing pet store
sign out the corner of her eye. An idea spring into her
mind and she walks towards the pet store.
SCENE 3: INT. LOCATION #3 – KITCHEN.
Back inside the house Sam places the new lookalike pet onto
the table. She looks at it for a second. The pet looks
similar but not identical. She tries to encourage it to be
familiar with its surroundings – to no avail. A laptop
starts ringing with the skype ring tone. The laptop in the
background lights up. Call incoming from ‘Kelly’. Sam
frantically looks between the animal sat staring at her and
the laptop screen. He scoops up the pet and sits in front
of the laptop pressing answer.
SAM
Hi Kelly! How are you?
KELLY: (LOUDLY)
Hello? Can you hear me? Hell-
SAM: (WINCING)
Yes, yes I can hear you. Loud and clear.
The pet wriggles into view
4. 4
KELLY: (GASPING)
Is that my little Buzz!! Oh let me have a
look at him! Hi Buzzy!
Kelly leans in closer and Sam reacts pulling the cat out of
view.
SAM: (NERVOUSLY)
Oh ha ha, yes that’s him. The same Buzz. Completely
identical. No different.
KELLY:
Well come on then, hold him up for me I
want to have a look.
SAM: (QUICKLY)
NO! No. He’s uhhh camera shy. Sorry!
Kelly is confused.
KELLY:
But-
SAM: (INSISTING)
He’s shaking I can feel it!
KELLY: (SLOWLY)
Hang on…what’s that on his back?
Sam goes pale and stops.
SAM:
What?! Nothing it’s just uh nothing ha
ha.
5. 5
KELLY:
No, that brown spot? He’s never had that
before?
SAM: (PLAYING IT OFF)
It’s just a shadow I’m sure. Anyway! Is
that the doorbell? Must be! Kelly got to
go!
KELLY:
Wait – Sam what’s going on?
SAM: (SHUTTING DOWN THE LAPTOP)
Bye! Bye. Byeeee.
Sam slams the laptop down and breathes a sigh of relief,
visibly relaxing.
SCENE 4: INT. THE NEXT MORNING.
Sam is walking around the house eating breakfast. She walks
past the calendar on the wall and stops dead. There in big
red writing is the return date of Kelly – today. She looks
over at the pet and starts to panic. She rushes round the
house doing last minute changes when suddenly she hears
Kelly’s tyres on the gravel and keys in the door. She
scoops up the pet and runs to the door ready to convince
Kelly it’s her old pet. As the door opens she is face to
face with a smiling Kelly.
SAM (RUSHED)
Look Buzz! It’s Kelly, your owner! Well
it’s been great staying here, hope you
enjoyed your holiday Kelly!
Sam goes to speak when another pet, the original Buzz
comes running in the door.
6. 6
There’s a pause between the two of them and Kelly’s face
morphs from confusion and shock to realization while Sam’s
face is of pure dread. Busted.
