Self-regulation is the ability to control one's emotions and behaviors internally. It is an important skill for school readiness and academic success. Young children need to develop self-regulation before they can learn academics. Teachers stress that self-regulation skills must be acquired before academic learning can take place. When children are allowed to participate in making classroom rules, they may become less dependent on teachers to solve conflicts and better able to self-regulate. More research is needed on developing self-regulation in young children.
