Minerals
Are natural non-
living substances
that makes up a
rock.
Why are there so many different kinds of
rocks?
Types of Rocks
1)Igneous rock
2)Sedimentary rock
3)Metamorphic rock
Metamorphic rocks
- Due to very high
temperature and pressure
below earth’s surface,
rocks can change and
form other rocks.
- Formed from igneous,
sedimentary or
metamorphic rocks also.
Example: Slate
Sedimentary rocks
- Have layers which
are made of rocks,
minerals or plants,
shells and other hard
materials.
- Fossils can be
found it them.
Example: Chalk
Sandstone
Limestone
Igneous rocks
- Below earth’s surface
are melted rocks called
magma. When magma
cools and hardens,
igneous rocks are
formed.
- When rocks cool
slowly, large mineral
grains are formed
(Granite)
-When rocks cool
quickly, mineral grains
are not formed.(Basalt)
Types of rocks
Igneous Rock
It is formed when melted rocks within the Earth(magma) is
pushed up from the surface (lava)which is cooler .
The cooler temperature causes the “magma “ to harden into
rocks
A)Slowly cooling Igneous Rock
It cools deep within the Earth’s surface .
All these rocks have similar coarse texture.
It takes hundreds of years to cool as a result large crystals form
Granite
B)Quickly cooling Igneous rock
It cools on earth’s surface when magma reaches the Earth’s surface it is called
“lava”.
Lava cools more quickly than magma producing finely grained rocks.
Basalt
Metamorphic Rocks
It is formed when igneous or sedimentary rocks are changed by
pressure ,high temperature ,very hot water or a combination of all
of the this
Sedimentary rocks
It is formed when layer of sediments settle over
time and bind together
Rock Cycle
