NFF (NUCLEAR FRIENDS FOUNDATION)
● We Nuclear Friends Foundation, are non-profit organisation (NPO), is
determined to clear myths about Nuclear Power in minds of people.
● We have been established with one and only objective of propagating true
and positive facts about Nuclear Energy.
● We aim to attend the entire negative buzz around Nuclear Power with true
facts and figures. NFF offers an open platform to everyone who believes in
the power of this modern form of energy.
● We intends to remove all the myths and misconceptions about Nuclear
Power that people have in todays arena
Introduction of BUDHIYA and NUCLEO
BUDHIYA
A Brand Ambassador of NFF Nuclear Friends
Foundation, who has taken the responsibility to make
people aware of Nuclear Energy.
NUCLEO
Nucleo is Mascot of NFF Nuclear Friends Foundation
Some Noteable Global and Indian Milestones
For making our comeback in the nuclear world we have come up with
an idea of educating people about some notable milestones in nuclear
history which are worth knowing as we progress towards having nuclear
energy as the best source of generation of power around the world.
1948- Indian Atomic Energy Commission
The Indian Atomic Energy Commission was first setup in August 1948 in the Department of Scientific
Research, which was created a few months earlier in June 1948. The team was headed by Dr. Homi
J. Bhabha
1953- Atoms for Peace
On December 8, 1953, American President D. Eisenhower delivered a speech titled ‘Atoms for Peace’
to the United Nations General Assembly, opening the doors for widespread sharing of information on
nuclear energy for peaceful purposes across the globe.
1954- Department of Atomic Energy
The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) came into being on August 3, 1954 under the direct charge
of the Prime Minister through a Presidential Order.
1954- APS-1 Obninsk
It was Soviet Russia that initiated a 5-MW nuclear power plant in the ‘Science City’ of Obninsk near
Moscow. However, this was not a consumer-scale commercial plant.
1956- Calder Hall
United Kingdom’s Calder Hall reactor unit-1 became the first Commercial nuclear power reactor in the
world, generating electricity on an industrial scale.
1957- Shippingport Atomic Power Station
The Shippingport Atomic Power Station in the United States of America became the world’s first full-
scale nuclear power plant devoted exclusively to civil nuclear power generation.
1969- Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS)
India joined the elite club of nations with nuclear power generation capability in 1969 when the first two
nuclear power reactor units in the country (Boiling Water Reactors, or BWRs) began commercial
operation at Tarapur in Maharashtra. Today, TAPS is the largest nuclear power plant in India in terms
of generation capacity, with 4 nuclear reactor units producing 1400 MW of electricity.
1973- Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS)
India’s first Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) unit, RAPS-1, began commercial operation in
1973. Today, with 6 PHWR units and 2 more under construction, the RAPS plant site is the largest
nuclear power plant in India in terms of number of reactors at a single plant location.
1984- Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS)
The first of the twin PHWR reactor units (MAPS-1) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu began commercial
operation in 1984. MAPS is India’s first indigenously built nuclear power station.
1991 - Narrora Atomic Power Station (NAPS)
Commercial power generation commenced at the first of the twin PHWR units (NAPS-1) at Narora in
Uttar Pradesh in 1991. NAPS represents the standardisation of PHWRs in India.
1993- Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS)
The consolidation phase of Indian PHWRs was achieved in the 1990s, represented by the twin PHWR
units at Kakrapar in Gujarat. The first PHWR reactor unit (KAPS-1) at the plant site began commercial
power generation in 1993. The plant site has 2 reactor units in operation, with 2 more currently under
construction.
2000- Kaiga Generating Station (KGS)
Located in Karnataka, KGS blends harmoniously with lush nature around it. The nuclear power station
began supplying commercial electricity in the year 2000. The plant site hosts 4 nuclear power reactor
units.
2014- Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP)
India’s largest-ever power generation reactor unit (nuclear or any other kind) till date began
commercial operation on December 31, 2014. Its twin unit, KKNPP-2, is also approaching
commissioning.
