● Obninsk Nuclear Power Station was built in the "Science City" of Obninsk, Kaluga Oblast,
Southwest of Moscow. It was the first nuclear reactor that produced commercial electricity and first
grid-connected nuclear power station in the world.
● Kudankulam Unit 1 was synchronized with the southern power grid on 22 October 2013. Unit-1
was operating at 73% capacity (680 MW) by April 2014. Unit 1 attained its maximum capacity of

the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Colloquially known as "Father of the Indian nuclear

● Sellafield site measures 6 square kilometres with 10,000 employees at Sellafield Ltd. It is the
Largest nuclear site in Europe. Nuclear fuel has been reprocessed at the Sellafield site for over 50
years. Reprocessing spent fuel allows 97% of this used fuel to be recycled back into new fuel.

● Denitrification is a microbially-facilitated process of nitrate reduction that ultimately produce
molecular nitrogen (N2
) through a series of intermediate gaseous nitrogen oxide products.

11. ● Thorium has double the energy when compared to Uranium and also it undergoes nuclear fission,
same as Uranium. India has abundant source of Thorium which is second highest in the world.

radioactivity.

● Uranium which is more used as a fuel in the Nuclear Power Plants. It does not release carbon
emissions as it is the greenest form of energy and helps in reducing carbon prints.
● Actinium is used in medicine to produce Bi-213 in a re-usable generator or can be used alone as
an agent for radio-immunotherapy for cancer patients.

to involve large number of people in the contest, who were continuously engaged with the contest
over the period of 2 years.

● The main aim of the contest is to educate people about nuclear energy and basic
science.
● Nuclear power plants use “Nuclear Fission” (the process of splitting an atom in two).
“Nuclear Fusion” (the process of combining atoms into one) has the potential to be
safer but has not yet been developed to operate within a large power plant.
● Nuclear energy comes from Uranium, Thorium and Plutonium. Nuclear power plants
generate energy without producing Co2
electricity.
● Nuclear energy is being used in more than 30 countries around the world and even
powers Mars rovers.
