Productivity gains and cost savings aside, digital twins will also become an essential tool in addressing the current climate crisis, presenting dramatic and exciting opportunities to achieve zero carbon targets and promote sustainable, healthier buildings. Energy shortage is a global challenge with significant implications for economies, societies, and the environment, including the Philippines. Promoting energy conservation in households is an effective approach to address this issue. In the Municipality of Midsayap, North Cotabato, Philippines, unmonitored energy consumption leads to excessive energy usage in households. To address this problem, this paper aims to research, build, test and implement a Real-Time Energy Consumption Monitoring (RECM) device using IoT technology. The RECM device, equipped with an SCT013 current sensor, enables real-time 24/7 monitoring of energy consumption. The monitored data is displayed in graphical and numerical formats using the Thing Speak cloud storage service. The RECM device was deployed in households, and a survey was conducted to evaluate its functionality and effectiveness. The results indicate that the design of the RECM device is a highly useful and efficient tool for real-time energy consumption monitoring. This paper provides circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, and the list of materials used to develop the Real-Time Energy Consumption Monitoring (RECM) device using IoT.”

Commonly referred to as SIM cards, the universal integrated circuit cards (UICCs) used in all cellular devices today are in fact complex and powerful minicomputers capable of much more than most Internet of Things (IoT) applications require. Until a simpler and less costly alternative becomes available, action must be taken to ensure that the relatively high price of UICC modules does not hamper IoT growth. This Ericsson Technology Review article presents two mid-term approaches. The first is to make use of techniques that reduce the complexity of using UICCs in IoT applications, while the second is to use the UICCs’ excess capacity for additional value generation. Those who wish to exploit the potential of the UICCs to better support IoT applications have the opportunity to use them as cryptographic storage, to run higher-layer protocol stacks and/or as supervisory entities, for example.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
