WWF study-review
WWF-Brazil published a study in 2020 called the "Sustainable Power Agenda" examining Brazil's energy production paths and challenges. In 2005, the government started prioritizing fossil fuel plants like diesel, coal and natural gas, approving 3,286 MW of capacity. This represented a 2.8% increase in Brazil's carbon dioxide emissions and 11% increase for the electric sector. As a result, WWF-Brazil concluded that choices in Brazil's electricity sector over the next 15 years would be critical for energy security, economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.

The Solar Foundation's National and State Solar Jobs Census 2013 found that the US solar industry employed over 142,000 workers in 2013, a 20% increase from 2012. California employs the most solar workers of any state at over 47,000, representing one third of total US solar employment. The report also found that solar installation jobs make up the largest sector of employment, while manufacturing accounts for the second largest sector. States with the highest growth rates in solar jobs between 2012-2013 included Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, West Virginia, and Vermont, which all more than doubled their solar employment in that period.

Energy Storage Planning for Clean Energy Target
In this work, we developed an optimization approach to analyze the amount of energy storage and renewable generation required for 100% clean energy target. Given locations of renewable generation, we solve an optimization problem to find the amount of solar PV and wind resources at each site and to size energy storage to balance a utility’s demand. Case studies are conducted using historical weather and demand data from a medium-sized utility in New Mexico, USA.

The significant penetration of solar energy in the electricity supply mix, especially in Western U.S. states, has resulted in profound changes to the shape of electricity system load curves. In the past, utility electricity suppliers with summer peak demand generally found their load peaking from mid-day to late afternoon. These same geographic areas have also been the most attractive candidates for solar implementation. The net effect has been a shifting of system net daily peak period to later in the day: spanning mid-late afternoon to early-late evening.
A guiding principle behind most ratemaking is to have electricity rates reflect real-time system costs. This provides higher pricing signals to the customer when the system has less available supply of electricity. Many utility tariffs are now either incorporating Time-of-Use (TOU) tariffs and/or moving their peak periods to later in the day to more accurately reflect net system peak and the impact of significant solar supply. These changes can have large cost impacts on Commercial & Industrial end users who have significant load in the evening hours.
This presentation will model these TOU tariff changes in California and other Western geographic areas. Energy management technologies such as energy storage and advanced controls will be analyzed as potential solutions to mitigate increased costs from TOU tariffs.
Finally, the carbon-intensity of unique utility electricity grids will be analyzed in the context of TOU peak periods. The author will present findings showing whether purchase of utility electricity during daily peak periods buys into a higher carbon emitting generation fleet, and to what degree.

Renewable energy sources have witnessed a remarkable surge while fossil fuel-based electricity production experienced a decline, according to the latest Monthly Electricity Statistics report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of global electricity production highlights a shift towards cleaner energy sources in both the OECD and Belgium.
In March 2023, total net electricity production in the OECD reached 887.8TWh, representing a 1.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2022.
Analysts note that the decline was primarily driven by lower electricity production from fossil fuel sources, which experienced an 8.1% year-to-date decrease.
Furthermore, nuclear power production also saw a notable decline of 3.1% year-to-date.
Notably, the report revealed a significant decrease in electricity generation from coal-fired plants, reaching a record low share of 15.9% in the electricity mix in March 2023.
This decrease surpassed the levels observed at the start of the Covid-19 lockdowns in April 2020, according to the IEA’s report.

Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained.
But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture?
In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change.
Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.

This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
