Micro power systems generate small amounts of electricity from sources near the point of use to eliminate transmission grids. They exploit various forms of ambient energy including solar, temperature gradients, human power, airflow, and vibrations. Research is being done on energy scavenging and storage methods like solar cells, thermoelectrics, piezoelectrics, batteries, capacitors, and miniature fuel cells to power autonomous wireless sensor nodes from scavenged energy sources in the local environment. Further development of micro power generation and ultra-low power electronics could eventually replace electrical grids by efficiently scavenging wasted and renewable energy.
