They found that women who were consistently engaged in care generally had more positive healthcare experiences like supportive providers and prompt linkage to care. Women who were inconsistently engaged in care faced some challenges like negative provider interactions and barriers to medications. Women who were detached from care most often had negative healthcare experiences, challenges accessing housing and medications, and substance abuse issues. The presence of supportive services and relationships helped facilitate engagement for some women.

Danielle Monteiro conducted an internship to evaluate the effectiveness of Morristown Medical Center's Quit Smoking Program. The six-week program provided support groups and tobacco replacement products. Surveys at 6 and 12 months assessed participants' smoking status, medication use, and factors in remaining quit or relapsing. Of 60 past participants, 45 completed the program and 28 were quit at 1 month. Surveys of 7 past participants found 86% remained quit at 1 month and 71% at 6 months. While the program helps many quit initially, the success rate declines over time, though overall outcomes have improved with years of implementation. Larger sample sizes are needed for more comprehensive evaluation.

In Zimbabwe, only 57% of adult women and 34% of adult men have been tested for HIV and received their results. To address this testing gap, HIV self-testing is being introduced to complement current HIV testing strategies and help Zimbabwe achieve its goal of having 90% of people living with HIV know their status. A pilot study is underway to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, accuracy, and ability to link people to care, treatment or prevention services of HIV self-testing using the OraQuick Advance oral test. Results are expected in June and will inform the larger UNITAID HIV STAR project starting that month aimed at further increasing HIV testing rates in Zimbabwe.

This randomized controlled trial examined the effectiveness of a case manager delivered HIV prevention intervention called Preventing AIDS Through Health (PATH) for people with severe mental illness (SMI) and substance abuse issues. 281 participants were assigned to receive either the PATH intervention or treatment as usual. The PATH intervention improved condom use and skills and reduced drug use compared to the control group. While the rapport between case managers and clients did not mediate these effects, case managers were able to effectively deliver the HIV prevention intervention. The results suggest comprehensive treatment for SMI should include discussions of sexuality and safer sexual practices.
