the United States, and it was undertaken by military. President Harry Truman issued an ultimatum
to the Japanese, demanding that they surrender by August 3 or face utter devastation. When the
Japanese failed to meet the deadline, Truman ordered the air force to use the new atomic weapons
against Japan (Brinkley 638). The problem at hand is how the Americans and Japanese dealt with

to skim over large periods of time without leaving the reader with questions, and gives just enough

about one particular incident that enhances the essence of the event and contrasts with the last few
sentences. The small conversation that Richler added gives the reader a greater respect for what
Leo accomplished, and by contrast, demonstrates the great misjudgement the narrator made.

call home . We humans seem to think we can determine which lives are worthy, or unworthy, of life.
Similarly, Hitler believed he had the right to determine which lives were worthy of living. During
the Holocaust, it is estimated that about 6 million Jews were euthanized because he deemed them
as undeserving of life. Included within that estimation are the victims of medical experiments,
which physicians imposed on them without consent. People in positions of power determined who
were worthy of continuing to live, with what we now consider basic human rights, and those
unworthy were euthanized or used in medical experimentation. By simply understanding the
expansive amount of pain and sufferingthese unworthy individuals went through, you will
understand why it is imperative that we teach this dark point in human history and make sure it is
never repeated.
