Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should: Begin to develop knowledge of different methods of production  for various products Begin to develop skills in selecting the best manufacturing process Develop knowledge in how to effectively organise production Develop knowledge of why stock control is so important
Methods of Production One off Production Batch Production Mass Production Continuous Production
One-Off Production Involves making a single product Wedding Cake Individual chair Tailored Designer Suit All costs are added to the final selling price Designing, transport, manufacture Tend to involve highly skilled workers
Batch Production Products are identical Product are made at the same time	 Large or small numbers Rolls, bread, cakes, etc Allows for more of the same to be made after production Involves some labour Workers may not have a range of skills
Batch Production Manufacturing aids used for easy repetition Jigs, formers Tends to require specialist tools and equipment
Mass Production Product goes through many stages on the production line Car, computers, mobile phones Workers/ machines specialise in a small range of tasks
Continuous Production 24/7 Very highly automated Workforce tend to be less skilled due to the high levels of automation Few workers compared to the high output Cost of the facility is very high and it can only produce a limited range of products  Paper, card, etc

Organising Production JIT – Just In Time Materials are ordered and used as and when required EDI The transfer of data from one computer to another (no human interaction)
Just in Time Materials are planned to arrive just in time Car plants use this  Work very closely with suppliers to ensure orders are placed in time JIT relies heavily on ICT as suppliers needs to be made aware instantly of any delays/ changes
Just In Time 	Advantage- Less money used in storing materials 	Disadvantage – Late delivery of goods will stop the production line Can give a company a bad reputation
 Electronic Data Interchange Structured data is transferred using ICT From retailer to supplier Speeds up customer order time Ensures that all stock levels are maintained

Managing Stock Stock Control Stock is reviewed regularly to ensure that efficient levels are maintained Product Data Management (PDM) Computer software  used globally
Stock Control Allows the right level of stock to be in place Prevents having lots of material which may not be required
PDM Allows information to be shared across a business globally Like an easy to access filing cabinet Material costs can be updated and shared simultaneously  Products are able to be manufactured and monitored  Key business process – changes in design, enhancement requests- can be easily changed Secure communication between employees and suppliers
