PPT describes the engine performance parameters of the I.C. engine.
Engine performance is an indication of the degree of success of the engine performs its assigned task, i.e. the conversion of the chemical energy contained in the fuel into the useful mechanical work. The engine performance is indicated by the term efficiency, η. Five important engine efficiencies and other related engine performance parameters are:
Power
Indicated Thermal Efficiency (ηith)
Brake Thermal Efficiency (ηbth)
Mechanical Efficiency (ηm)
Volumetric Efficiency (ηv)
Relative Efficiency or Efficiency Ratio (ηrel)
Mean Effective Pressure (Pm)
Specific Fuel Consumption (sfc)
Fuel-Air or Air-Fuel Ratio (F/A or A/F)
Calorific Value (CV)
Power:-
The main purpose of running an engine is to obtain mechanical power.
Brake Power (B.P.)
The power developed by an Engine at the output shaft is called the brake power.
Brake Power= Brake Workdone/Time
B.P.=BWD/sec.
Indicated power (I.P.)
The total power developed by Combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber is called indicated power.
Indicated Power= Indicated Workdone/Time
I.P.=IWD/sec.
Frictional Power (F.P.)
The difference between I.P. and B.P. is called frictional power (f.p.).
FP = IP – BP
Thermal Efficiency (ηth)
Thermal efficiency is the ratio of Power to energy supplied by the fuel.
ηth= Power/ Energy
In I.C. Engine, thermal efficiency can be classified into two categories i.e.
Indicated Thermal Efficiency (ηith)
Indicated thermal efficiency is the ratio of indicated power to the heat supplied or added.
ηith= IP/Qs
2. Brake Thermal Efficiency (ηith)
Brake Thermal Efficiency is the ratio of brake power to the heat supplied or added.
ηbth= BP/Qs
Volumetric Efficiency (ηv)
This is one of the most important parameters which decide the performance of four-stroke engines. Four stoke engines have distinct suction stoke, volumetric efficiency indicates the breathing ability of the engine.
Volumetric efficiency is defined as the ratio of actual flow rate of air into the intake system to rate at which the volume is displaced by the system.

Digital Differential Analyzer (DDA) algorithm is the simple line generation algorithm which is explained step by step here.
Step 1 − Get the input of two end points (X0,Y0) and (X1,Y1).
Step 2 − Calculate the difference between two end points.
dx = X1 - X0
dy = Y1 - Y0
Step 3 − Based on the calculated difference in step-2, you need to identify the number of steps to put pixel. If dx > dy, then you need more steps in x coordinate; otherwise in y coordinate.
Step 4 − Calculate the increment in x coordinate and y coordinate.
Step 5 − Put the pixel by successfully incrementing x and y coordinates accordingly and complete the drawing of the line.
The Bresenham algorithm is another incremental scan conversion algorithm. It is useful alternative for the DDA
The big advantage of this algorithm is that it uses only integer calculations

2. Methods of Supercharging:-
• Compressor driven by engine
• Compressor driven by turbine
• Compressor driven by external source of
power
• Compressor driven by engine shaft and free
turbine
• Direct coupling between engine, compressor
and turbine
3. 1)Compressor driven by engine
• In this arrangement, the compressor is driven by
engine with help of gearing or belt drive, a
certain engine output is used to run the
compressor as shown in fig. In this case, net
output of supercharged engine is greater than
gross output of naturally aspirated engine. The
net output increase due to supercharging is
obtained by subtracting this power from the
gross output. Air cooler is used after compressor
to reduce the temperature of air: therefore,
further density of air is increased.
4.
5. 2)Compressor driven by turbine
• In this arrangement, the compressor is driven
by turbine which run with help of exhaust
gases coming from engine as shown in fig. In
this case engine output is not utilized to drive
to drive the compressor, but the exhaust
energy of the engine is used to run the turbine
which is coupled to compressor. There is no
mechanical connection between engine and
supercharger. This arrangement is also called
turbo-chargered.
6.
7. 3)Compressor driven by external source of
power
• In this arrangement, the compressor is neither
driven by engine nor turbine, but compressor
is separarately driven by external power
source as shown in fig.
8.
9. 4)Compressor driven by shaft and free
turbine
• In this arrangement, power produced by
engine is utilized only to run the compressor
as shown in fig. the exhaust gases coming
from engine is utilized to run the turbine. The
power produced by turbine is used for
external load. This arrangement is also known
as generator type supercharging.
10.
11. 5)Direct coupling between engine,
compressor and turbine
• In this arrangement, the compressor, engine
and turbine all are coupled together with help
of gearing as shown in fig. In this case, If the
turbine output is not enough to run the
compressor during the part load on engine
power takes care of the remaining load of
compressor. In addition to this an extra power
from the turbine can be fed to the engine.
