5. Employee Innovation
• The logic is, why rely on the
intelligence of a few when
you can tap into the collective
wisdom of many?
• Toyota implemented a
“Creative Ideas Suggestive
System” in 1951 and more
than 40 million ideas have
been contributed to the
company from employees at
all levels. Of course not every
idea is implemented by Toyota
but there was a time when
they had at a 98%
implementation rate.

6. Costumer Innovation
• “My Starbucks Idea” Starbucks
has received 45,221 ideas for
coffee and espresso drinks, 22,080
ideas around atmosphere and
location, 11,143 ideas around
social responsibility, and 23,101
ideas around their Starbucks Card.
• ” Sensaware” tracking the
package’s location, barometric
pressure, temperature, light
exposure, and humidity. This gives
customers complete confidence in
knowing that their cargo will
arrive in tact. This product idea
came as a result of customer
feedback.

7. Partner/Supplier Innovation
• Many organizations today don’t stand
alone as independent entities. They
work with and form alliances with
suppliers & partners who they trust.
Starbucks and Barnes & Noble, HP &
Disney, Coca Cola & the World
Wildlife Fund , IBM & Box, etc.
• Walmart is the world’s largest
employer (2.2 million people). In the
1980′s Sam Walton understood the
importance of opening and sharing
more data with their suppliers such
as P&G. By doing this Walmart was
able to dramatically improve
forecasting, minimize inventory
turnover, and improve shelf space.

8. Competitor Innovation
• The organizations who team up with
competitors realize that the smartest
people in the world don’t always
work for them and so they have to
reach beyond their four walls to tap
into top talent.
• Ford & GM have been considered
hardcore rivals in the automotive
space yet they decided to team up in
order to develop 9 and 10 speed
transmissions to be used in their
vehicles. Both Ford & GM realized
that by teaming up they could go to
market with these new transmissions
faster while saving time and money
on development and production.

9. Public Innovation
• Sometimes innovation can come from the general
public that might not have that direction connection
or relationship.
• Royal Dutch Shell has almost 100,000 employees
around the world. In the mid 90s, Shell launched
GameChanger program. The goal was designed to
“nurture unproven ideas that have the potential to
drastically impact the future of energy.” Previously this
was a program that was only available to employees.
However now anyone can submit an idea to Shell just
by filling out this form.
• Procter & Gamble launched a decade ago called
Connect & Develop. P&G receives over 4,000
innovation ideas every year. Their goal by the end of
2015 is to have Connect & Develop contribute $3
billion towards the company’s annual sales growth.
