This presentation discusses drug metabolism and prodrugs. It defines drug metabolism as the biochemical modification of pharmacological substances by living organisms through specialized enzyme systems. Drug metabolism often makes lipophilic compounds more hydrophilic and excretable. There are three phases of drug metabolism - phase I introduces reactive groups, phase II conjugates compounds, and phase III further processes conjugated compounds for excretion. Prodrugs are inactive precursors that are metabolized into an active form. Prodrugs can improve drug absorption, distribution, and reduce unintended side effects. Prodrugs are classified as type I which are activated intracellularly or type II which are activated extracellularly. Examples of prodrugs are given.
