JUICE MAG
2. PURPOSE
The purpose of the magazine will be to educate our target audience by providing
them with information about rappers such as rare and interesting facts, general
knowledge such as height, family and net worth. Furthermore, the magazine
would include a history of the genre rap and who is considered the greatest
rappers of all time, along with a timeline of significant moments within the history
of rap. Another purpose is to promote rappers and their upcoming concerts and
their unique stories and qualities, therefore, you are raising awareness and
promoting their sponsors and their labels by including them in your magazine in
order to spread the word about their rising popularity.
3. FORM
The purpose of the magazine will be to educate our target audience by providing them with
information about rappers such as rare and interesting facts, general knowledge such as
height, family and net worth. Furthermore, the magazine would include a history of the
genre rap and who is considered the greatest rappers of all time, along with a timeline of
significant moments within the history of rap. Another purpose is to promote rappers and
their upcoming concerts and their unique stories and qualities, therefore, you are raising
awareness and promoting their sponsors and their labels by including them in your
magazine in order to spread the word about their rising popularity.
4. GENRE
The genre of the magazine is Rap and the magazine will include the history of rap
from the 1970s when it began and the magazine will also include the most popular
rappers today and their most popular songs, as well as their net worth and their
childhood and how they have risen to fame. This will help the target audience
through informing them on upcoming performances and songs and telling them
information on how highly they are ranked amongst the best in rap, including
charts and graphs.
5. CONTENT
The magazine will include a timeline of when rappers began their career and key
moments in their story to fame. The timeline would last around 5 - 10 pages and it would
include the deaths of rappers and influential performances. The magazine would also
include 2 - 4 pages on each rapper. These pages would include key facts about them
such as age, location of birthplace, family tree, most popular songs, photos of them and
one large photo that would cover one page so that people could use it as a poster. There
would be articles with famous rappers, including a discussion of their daily life, the
pressure that fame has and their journey to stardom. Furthermore, the magazine would
include interviews with the most famous and best known labels and discuss with them,
what they look for in a best-selling artist and tips on how you can make it as a rapper or in
that industry.
6. PRICE
The price of the magazine £2.50 to £3.50. This may be quite cheap, however, the
target audience are quite young, therefore they are not likely to spend a lot of money
and if their parents are paying for it, so they are unlikely to spend a lot for a
magazine that will most likely be looked at for the first few days. The target audience
will most likely be working and middle class, meaning they are more likely to buy the
magazine if it is more affordable. Furthermore, the audience are young, therefore
they use social media consistently and are practically addicted to their phone,
meaning some of the facts that are included in the magazine can be found by
searching the questions on the internet. The price needs to be lower so that younger
audiences will want to buy it.
7. TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience is aimed at ages 14 - 29. According to google, the the age of the target
audience for rap is 16 and 24. I have made a wider range because siblings may look up to an
older sibling, therefore, they will listen to their music from a young age and rap officially began in
the 1970s therefore there could be people in their thirties listening to rap as they started to listen
as soon as it came out. Furthermore, the reason for making the target audience older is because
younger people such as teenagers don't typically buy magazines and instead, they use social
media.
8. RESOURCES
Resources such as laptops would be needed to design the website's layout or to edit photos or
fonts which would feature in the magazine. A camera would be needed to take photos of the
rappers that would feature in the magazine. Paper and pencils would be needed to make a
basic sketch of the front cover. It would also be useful for creating pre-production tools and just
brief sketches of the content before finalizing them on the computer. I would need to rent out a
studio or an office where all the work could be done. you will need Photoshop to edit photos
and the fit of all features to ensure that the layout is suitable for the magazine. A location recce
would be helpful in finding a safe space to work and to ensure that the conditions are safe and
appropriate for the tasks and personnel.
9. PERSONNEL
One member of personnel would be a photographer to take all the photos, angle the
pictures. you would need an editor so that you have someone who is experienced is using
Photoshop. I would need a stylist to dress the rappers into the latest and most applicable
clothing for rap. I would assign a runner to get essential food and drinks to ensure that the
rest of the personnel is happy and fed properly. A writer would be useful to edit all of the
articles and to write in a perticular format that would apply to the target audience as to not
bore them and instead engage them.
10. MARKETING METHODS
One market method would be to have the name of the magazine or the actual front cover on the side of
a bus or on the electric boards at bus stops. This way you can place many as there lots and it will be
easy to spot by members of your target audience as all ages get the bus and this way people will see
this and will raise awareness because some people take the bus everyday. Another method could be
handing out fliers at concerts and music shops because if you have the fliers at specific concerts,
including rap artists or music shops that sell rap songs, the fliers will apply to them and if they see a flier
that applies to the music they are seeing, they are more likely to be interested and buy it.
One more method that could be effective is writing inspirational quotes or lyrics of well known rap songs
or a brief summary of interesting articles that will feature in the magazine on the walls in train stations.
The way it could raise awareness is by writing the link to the magazine website or the name of the
magazine in the corner. Another method would be through online websites and social media apps such
as Instagram, Facebook, twitter or Snapchat by having popups or adverts at the side of the website so
that when people are searching for well known websites that they use daily, they will see that and if they
repeatedly see it, they will eventually click on it or be interested because they can associate themselves
with it.
11. TITLE OF MAGAZINE
Name 1 - Made It
the name 'Made It' is a representation of a new rapper, which is being featured, having made it and to suggest that they are now
famous gaining popularity, awareness and wealth. Therefore, the title presents the idea of making it big and the idea of featuring on
a magazine.
Name 2 - Highest Fashion
The 'Highest Fashion' portrays that the magazine includes the best music and the best rappers. This is also a similar name to one of
Rody Ricch's well known songs 'high fashion' making him a big name to be included in the magazine which would entice his large
fan base a lot more and would raise awareness for the magazine a lot more.
Name 3 - Juice mag
The title juice is very applicable to the genre of rap as lots of rappers such as Chance the rapper use this term which means respect
and power, meaning they are respect by other rappers an are admired.
This is also the title to one of Chance The Rappers first songs and this would be well known by most fans which also raise its
awareness.
In conclusion, the title i have chosen is Name 3 - 'Juice' as it is a common and well-known term used in rap songs and serves a sign
of respect and admiration which is what a lot of rappers desire, making it the perfect title as it is constantly associated with rappers
and their songs.
13. FONT STYLES Font 1 - Oysters
This font has a futuristic and modern style which presents the style of
the magazine as the magazine includes rappers today. It also very
large which makes it bolder and grabs the audiences attention more
Font 2 - Bolder
The style is very loose and fluid which conveys the some fluidity of
actual juice making it more suitable. The letters are also spaced out
and easy to read, however it may be slightly small, making it less
engaging for the target audience.
Font 3 - Documenta
This font is very engaging as it has a design that makes it pop out and
adds a more exciting style fore the target audience as each letter is
spaced out and bold making you focus on each letter of the title.
In conclusion, i have chosen font 3 - documenta because this font is
bold as evenly spaced that allows you to engage with it and it feels like
the letters are popping off the page. The fact that the letters are being
projected forwards adds a sense of how a rapper's fame increases.
14. ARTICLE IDEAS
Some article ideas i have are ones that involve an interview with a manager of a famous rapper
such as Scooter Braun and the article would include questions on how he runs his business,
what it takes to be a rapper and what he would typically look for in a rapper that he wants to
sign. These questions would allow the audience members to understand a rappers lifestyle and
how they could get signed and what they need to work on in order to make it. Another article
would be upcoming songs and what collaborations are going to be made for new songs that will
be coming out and what to expect. Articles such as the history of rap from the 70s all the way up
to now and how the genre has developed and comparing the old to the new. Another article
could be results on research done through questionnaires based on peoples preference to old
rappers or the new rappers. These results would be viewed by some of the biggest stars and
managers and there would be an article including their reaction and opinion to these results
which would add some humour and tension to make it more entertaining.
15. MOOD BOARD
I have created this mood board which includes some of the rappers i will be including in my
magazine and includes rappers that are favoured and popular in today's music charts. This
mood board also includes the colour of which i will most likely use for my magazine which is
yellow and black as yellow is a typical colour for rap though jewellery being gold and the fact that
rappers where jewellery yo show off their wealth. The black is used as it compliments yellow
and this is my favourite colour combination.
16. COMPETITION
One magazine magazine that serves as competition is Vibe as it
includes similar rappers to what my magazine will include and applies
to the same target audience. Vibe first got published by Quincy Jones
in 1993, therefore, they have been around for a lot longer and was
created by a missive record producer and is very well known and is
considered to be one of the best producers of all time. Therefore,
people are likely to read that as a very famous producer made it and
they want to associate themselves with him.
Another competing magazine is XXL and they feature and talk about
very well known rappers of today generation and feature popular
rappers today that will apply to most rap fans and it was founded in
1997 which is less of a threat but still a large threat as it has been
around for very long and features rappers such as Jay-Z which one of
the most famous rappers of all time making it better known and more
applicable to a larger target audience.
