What kind of media institution might distribute your media produce and why?
About my product My task was to create a music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. I used the existing magazine Q to help me create a magazine which I believe would survive in today’s market.
Where would my magazine fit in? I created my magazine to suit a young audience, ranging from 15 – 25. I did this as this is one of the largest populations strongly influenced by music. From looking at the front cover of my magazine it shows big band names which would appeal to the younger audience. It also has that element that may appeal to an older audience as well, for example the cover line ‘100 most inspirational women in rock’. This appeals as they are more likely to have been brought up with the likes of Debbie Harry from Blondie. The front cover has a simplistic touch as it is not over crowded with images and text but shows the basics which I believe a more sophisticated audience would be attracted too. But the young model and clothing she is wearing feels more working class and casual, nothing special. Furthermore, my double page article has a lighter tone that a younger audience would relate to better than an older audience. The casual writing and informal question and answer process is light hearted and very much in tone with today. This is also down to the fact that my artist is also young allowing the audience to relate to her and idolize her.
What product is the closest to the one I have created? From looking at other music magazines I have decided that Q magazine is the closest one to my end product. This is mainly because of the layout. Like most front covers of Q the cover lines are placed down the sides of the model who is positioned exactly in the centre. The cover line at the top right is very similar to mine as it talks about the ‘GREAT’ British songwriter and below is the cover line ’50 ultimate British songs’ both of which link to my cover like of ‘100 most inspirational women in rock’. The mastheads are also similar as they both use the simplistic white letter on a coloured background.
Publishing companies Bauer Media GroupCurrently the worlds largest media group publishing 323 magazines in 15 different countries. Bauer has two main operations in the UK, `H Bauer Publishing’ which publishes things such as `Bella’ and `Take a Break’. But the one I am interested in is `Bauer Consumer Media’ which publishes top music magazines `Q’, `Kerrang’ and `Mojo’. My main focus is on the magazine `Q’ as it is a similar product to my own. It is a monthly publication which in 2009 final quarter sold 94,811. It is a multi genre, multi age demographic. Its best selling publication is `Mojo’ selling 98,484 in its 2009 final quarter.Obviously this magazine is capable of selling such products and I feel that my magazine will do particularly well here, on the other hand as my magazine is similar to `Q’ I feel that I may need to look for an opening somewhere else. IPC This is currently the largest magazine publishing company in Britain. Operating more than 60 magazines in the UK alone, being read by roughly 40% of the population a year. Selling more than 350 million magazines a year this company seems more than capable of selling mine. The two magazines I am interested in are `NME’ and `Uncut’. `NME’ is a weekly publication that focuses on `indie’ rock with a 16-25 age demographic selling 38,486 in its 2009 final quarter. `Uncut’ is IPC’s version of `Mojo’. A monthly publication selling 75,518. Focusing on classic rock it aims at at age demographic of 25+. This magazine is defiantly one to consider as it is the largest magazine company in Britain, it also does not sell a magazine like mine so it has an open market. On the other hand its sales do not seem to be as high as those of `Bauer Media Group’.
Conclusion In conclusion I would like IPC to publish my magazine. It has a clear opening in it’s market for a magazine like mine compared to Bauer which has `Q’ already and would show competition in the company between magazines. IPC would be perfect for my magazine and I think it will do well here bringing in good sales.
