3. LINKS BETWEEN LYRICS AND/OR MUSIC AND
VISUALS
Here the high five is
on the beat
allowing for
emphasis on the
friendship between
theses two people
and character
development as
they have greater
understanding and
share in each
other’s success and
memories.
Here the two of them are
laughing as the word
close is sung, visual
representation of the lyric
meaning not physically as
there is distance between
them but meaning close
emotionally and mentally.
“and be the water” down by the river
hand in the water. Here the water is
the symbol for life and rebirth showing
how he about to face large changes in
his life the river showing how life
course will never be straight and
having him on the artificial bank takes
the lyric and be the water and make it
feel like the water to stay there and be
more permanent than other people
who go past.
4. THE WAY A RECORD COMPANY WOULD WANT
THEIR ARTIST TO BE REPRESENTED
• For our text we believed that the record company would like a wholesome image to run
alongside these lyrics and so we focused on presenting him in youth as such we have two
representations of the artist as shown below. We have him as an older boy and as a pre
teen boy.
The left shot is of the older boy but we feel the
record company would like the artist to
represented in this photo booth as it play to the
indie audience and as Jack fits into a sub genre
of this it will extend a fan base. Also preserving
his youth in a photo will allow the moment and
nostalgia that he sings about to be captured
forever. The second picture shows that despite
being the older boy he is full of youth and
happiness which go alongside the uplifting tone
of the music.
This shot below would be
something a record company
would like not only because of its
indie filters but the boy is dressed
in alternative clothing and again
showing youth which has been the
marketing point/campaign for this
song as it directly contradicts
mainstream pop culture
highlighting its alternative roots.
5. HOW YOUR VIDEO USES MUSIC GENRE
Our music video uses genre in
moth our abstract narrative and
cross cutting enigma format and
as seen in shots like this we
have taken retro locations
symbolizing youth such as this
bowling alley and using darker
filters and the camcorder setting
we have turned it into an
alternative place for dates. Also
we have used mise-en-scene
though the use od costume to
highlight the main genre being
alternative and following the
conventions of lots of darker
colours to contrast with the
surround areas in the shopping
center.
6. INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCE IN YOUR PIECE
We shot a large amount of this video in a bowling
alley which although is not done often in today’s
mainstream media was featured in Charlie XCX’s
music video for “Breaking Up”. We use the
knowledge and YouTube comments on the video to
see that a lot of people had loved the feeling of a
more retro music video. This gave us inspiration and
also knowledge that there is a market for videos shot
in these locations which we were unsure of before.
7. USE OF CAMERA 1
• We chose to use free hand movement
and as such in our opening sequence
we did all the tracking shots in the same
way to give it more of a natural flow and
informal feel to the shots. The best
example of this is when Sam (younger
boy) is jumping on the benches and the
girl is being lead by Matt (older boy)
which can be seen below. This help us
create the home movie elegance we
imagined in our pre visualization as
when memories are looked back and
reflected on they are not always perfect
pan shots in order to get a realistic
representation we knew we would have
to run along side as if we were chasing
the boy like a parent would.
8. USE OF CAMERA 2
• Here we used the camera to symbolize her walking out of his life by having her not in the
center of the shot and focusing on the river with connotations of reflection. Thus in doing
this we created a shot with deeper emotion and thanks to filtering and slow motion a hint
of romance.
9. USE OF LIGHTING
Here we used bright lighting from the game in front of him to create a
pink hue over the boy. Pink has connotations of youth and we used a
brighter light to show his happiness in his sister giving him a few coins
to play some of his favourite games in the arcade. By shining this light it
no only shows the blissful innocence of youth but it creates an indie
shot that came not only from the unconventional camera angle but the
look of concentration on his face almost over lighted here but thanks to
shadows in following shot is clear to see.
10. USE OF MISE-EN-SCENE
In this shot we used the mise-en-scene of costume. By putting the boy in a black hoodie we created
and air of wondering what will happen when he gets older as arguably he is dressed more maturely
here, this is highlighted by him looking out and reflecting on life via looking across the river. The river
itself shows the passing of time and looking out to the bank shows that he will get to the other side
but until that time he can only look reflect and wait. By being in a hoodie it symbolizes the coldness
that he feels at this moment in time from the outside world as it is the beginning of his transition from
boyhood into manhood.
12. LINKS BETWEEN LYRICS AND/OR MUSIC AND
VISUALS
Here we see a still from Panic! At the discos music video for “Victorious” here we can see the
artist has just won a big fight and is presented all of his glory. This is lyrical visualization of
the word Victorious which is being sung and held on a long note as this shot plays though.
Thus increasing his status as a champion and giving context to the narrative which is of
someone celebrating all his success how ever small.
13. THE WAY A RECORD COMPANY WOULD WANT
THEIR ARTIST TO BE REPRESENTED
This is from the band Oh Wonder's
music video. As the duo sing all of
the songs together without one
person doing a solo having them
shown on similar levels and in the
same or similar clothes and colour
schemes shows how they are on an
equal level which as it is the case of
that in the music would be a perfect
representation of the band which
the record label would want to
promote in the 21st century full of
equal rights movements especially
those based on gender equality
which they currently have the ability
to capitalize off.
14. HOW THE VIDEO USES MUSIC GENRE
Here is a hip hop / rap music video which
shows the artist indulging in the
adolescent male fanatics theory. This
plays to the genre convection of always
having lost of bling and girls in a music
video thus making it easily recognizable if
you are a fan of this genre.
15. INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCE
Here in Robbie Williams music video for “you
know me” he is constantly referencing the
book Alice in Wonderland. He is playing the
rabbit which could suggest he is constantly
running around and feeling like he's been left
behind or late.
16. USE OF CAMERA
Here is a still from Walk the Moon’s video for
“Anna Sun” the band is from the alternative
genre and so their use of camera for this
video was very experimental as they did the
whole video in one take. They used only free
hand camera and as seen in the shot
opposite they used filters to create a dream
like fantasy which is helped by the
continuous free hand flow of the camera, you
feel as if you are perfectly in the video and in
trance like state which is helped by the
dream like quality to this record at the start.
17. USE OF LIGHTING
In this video the use of lighting creating shadows
on the artists face creates lyric visualization as they
sing “I see the shadows on my face”. Also the
lights flowing from behind give an old school blues
style to the video which is in keeping with the tone
of the song. Also by having him standing blocking
the light it shows him at powerful and the most
important thing in the shot as it has connotations of
power thanks to figure like god being represented
with the light shining from behind them.
18. USE OF MISE-EN-SCENE
Taylor Swifts music video for Begin Again is full of deeply emotional shots as the song is about
getting over a breakup and finding new love. The perfect mise-en-scene for that is Paris which is of
course the city of love. Her standing on the Pont Des Arts shows that she is reflecting on romance
gone buy and more than just her own, this bridge is famous for almost collapsing under the weight
of all these padlocks and at night some heart broken lovers return to try and cut off padlocks after
a messy break up. Also red is the colour of love and passion so by here wearing a red skirt it
shows that she is move forward despite thinking about older memories she wants to create new
ones.
