3. SYNOPSIS
The narrative of my music video follows two youths in a relationship and them both separately. The video
includes the male and female spending time together showing reckless behaviour including short
montage clips transferring between the relationship of the couple to the female alone and empowered
without the man to the couple being reckless together as well as the pair being together closely followed
by one of the character going out of camera range to represent the loss of the partner within the
relationship. Leaving the audience to question what will happen next in the video or what happened for
this to take place.Due to the video being a montage it will not have a beginning , middle or end opposing
to Todrov’s theory revolving the stages of equilibrium. Following the stages of how the male was a bad
influence on the female and the male having the stereotypical bad guy characteristics to match that
statement. Such as the male driving at a high speed on a motorway which will link to lyrics to the visuals
as the lyrics say “We're riding down the boulevard. We're riding into the dark night, night. With half the
tank and empty heart "As well as the female wearing revealing clothing and having a seductive attitude
both towards the male and a result of direct mode of address towards the camera conforming the
stereotypical gender roles. The media language will represent the mis en scene such as low lighting to
accentuate the theme of rebellious teens and how Youths to express themselves and to challenge
hegemony the role of media representations in society.
4. LYRICS AND MEANINGS
We're riding down the boulevard
We're riding into the dark night, night
With half the tank and empty heart
Pretending we're in love, when it's never
enough
As the silence filled the lonely air
Oh, they can hear now now now baby
We see a storm is closing in
Pretending we're escaping
Don't say a word while we danced with the
devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
Don't say a word while we danced with the
devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
We're running all the red lights down
No way that we can stop, no no
A quarter tank is almost gone,
Pretending we're in love, when it's never
enough
I wish we could take it back in time
Before we crossed the line, no now now,
baby
We see a storm is closing in
I reach out for your hand
Don't say a word while we danced with the
devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
Don't say a word while we danced with the
devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
Oh oh, hold on, oh yeah, hold on
Don't say a word while we danced with
the devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to
never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on),
hold on
Don't say a word while we danced with
the devil
You brought the fire to a world so cold
We're out of time on the highway to
never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
“We're riding down the boulevard
We're riding into the dark night, night
With half the tank and empty heart”
The sense of driving as a release of real life
and starting of a narrative to a location as
well as youths driving linking to Hebdige
and the fact youths are seen as trouble by
going out late and driving and the lack of
good representations of youths.
“Don't say a word while we danced
with the devil” - The word "danced"
shows how it happened but is not
happening anymore therefore my
video will be of a girl looking back on
the relation that was a bad influence.
“You brought the fire to a
world so cold. We're out of
time on the highway to never”-
The highlights of relationships.
Blumler and Katz created the uses
and gratifications theory as they
acknowledged that all media,
including music videos, offered
their audiences a form of
knowledge and pleasure when
watching so displaying
relationships will relate to this
theory.
5. LYRICS AND VISUALS (GOODWIN)
“Pretending we're in love,
when it's never enough”
Visuals of the male and
female looking at each other
in a loving way to show the
stage of the relationship
where they are happy.
However the video will show
how it was not enough and
their relationship did not
work.
“We're riding into the
dark night” – Visuals of
them driving in the dark
to show reckless
behaviour.
“I wish we could take it
back in time” – visuals
of flashback
“You brought the
fire to a world so
cold” Female
burning pictures of
the boy over a fire
6. THE TYPE OF GENRE
The genre for my video is a pop narrative however the video is fragmented by it
including a montage effect making it a hybrid as the narrative is shown throw the
montage however it does not have a beginning , middle and end making it a non-
linear narrative. For example it will show the upbeat moments of the relationship to
bad parts of the relationship as well as the ending of the relationship.
7. TARGET AUDIENCE
According to the NEA brief my target
audience for the music video I will be
creating is both female and male in
between the ages of 16 and 25 as well
as having a fun loving character.
8. TARGET AUDIENCE ACCORDING TO
GEARS
Gender -This video is aimed towards both male and females
in the way they can both relate to the storyline as both genders
experience various relationships in their life. Linking to blumler
and katz gratification theory in the way they express personal
identity and the way viewers can recognise a person or product,
role models that reflect similar values to themselves and mimic
or copy some of their characteristics.
9. TARGET AUDIENCE ACCORDING
TO GEARS
Ethnicity - Both actors will be from the white/British nationality however I hope to
represent other ethnicities through characters in the background.
10. TARGET AUDIENCE ACCORDING
TO GEARS
Age- Both actors in my video will be young adults at the age of 17 and 18
meaning they fit the identity of the 16-25 target audience. I plan to have
the theme of rebellious youths and how they express themselves in the
way they challenge hegemony and the role of media representations in
society today (Hebdidge).
11. TARGET AUDIENCE ACCORDING
TO GEARS
Region – The music video will be filmed in Harlow and surrounding areas
in Essex. However the video will not specialise in
showing the regional identity within the story , it will
show aspects such as road signs and known locations
to the regular public.
12. TARGET AUDIENCE ACCORDING
TO GEARS
Socio economic- The video will show teens going on a road trip
and having fun and experiencing life to its full extent. E would be the
female in the video who is shown to find a release and have fun
without any economic support. Whereas the male young adult with the
car would be from a c1 background due to expenses of the car and the
designer clothes he will be wearing.
13. YOUNG AND RUBICAM
The struggler
These people are the type of people that have the
'You Only Live Once' approach to live, as they live
for today and make few plans for tomorrow. They
are often associated as wasters and losers, people
that have little aims and few resources apart from
physical skills. If they get anywhere in life, it's seen
as if it will only depend on if they win the lottery
rather than working hard and getting places. This
would relate to the female in the way her
empowerment in the video gave her the attitude
of living for today not tomorrow.
The reformer
The reformer is someone who seeks
enlightenment. Reformers are defined by self-
esteem and self-improvement. They are not
influenced by status and are not materialistic. They
are socially aware people who are inclined to
invest in brands and products that are good for
them or good for the environment. Having the
'don’t tell me what to do' attitude the male in the
video will have towards the female when ending
the relationship.
14. INTERTEXTUALITY
Truth hurts is a song by the artist Lizzo this ties into my
music video due to the story being inspired by the lyrics of the
song.
Yeah, I got boy problems, that's the human in me Show
how majority of people especially females will have relationship
issues.
You're 'posed to hold me down, but you're holding me
back represents how the female has gained a sense of
empowerment to go out and experience the world by herself
without having a man by her side
15. THEORISTS IN MY VIDEO
I will use the effect of leaving the
audience to question what will
happen next in the video or what
happened for this to take
place(Barthes enigma code).
The link of lyrics to the visuals (Goodwin)
Such as driving.
The female will be wearing revealing
clothing and having a seductive
attitude both towards the male and
a result of direct mode of address
towards the camera conforming the
stereotypical gender roles (Van
Zoonen).
The media language will
represent the mis en scene
such as low lighting to
accentuate the theme of
rebellious teens and how
Youths to express themselves
and to challenge hegemony
the role of media
representations in society
(Hebdidge).
