2. Then I'm gone
Will you recognize me
When I'm stealing from the poor
You're not gonna like me
I'm nothing like before
Will you recognize me
When I lose another friend
Will you learn to leave me
Or give me one more try again
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too
long
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too
long
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wait with good intentions
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wait with good intentions
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wait with good intentions
You say that you're away
I try but always break
'Cause the day always lasts too long
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Will you recognize me
In those flashing lights?
I try to keep my heart beat
But I can't get it right
Will you recognize me
When I'm lying on my back?
Somethings gone inside me
And I can't get it back
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too
long
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too
long
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I’m gone
Then I’m gone
Then I’m gone
Then I’m gone
Then I’m gone
Lyrics:
3. Will you recognize me. In
those flashing lights?
Flashing lights are associated
with paparazzi cameras, which
are pointed at the celebrities
they’re taking pictures of. Not
only will the flashing light
drown out her appearance, but
these situations will change
her personality. Would
everyone still think of her the
same way when she’s famous
and being mobbed by
paparazzi? It could also be
interpreted as the flashing
lights representing police lights
on a car when a mistake is
made.
Will you recognize me.
When I'm lying on my
back?
This could be seen as the
fear of people still
recognising you when you
have changed. Such as
lying on my back relating
to homelessness or
prostitution.
I wake with good
intentions. But the day, it
always lasts too long
This suggests the theme of
Christianity, these lyrics
suggest that many try to do
good things in order to
become a good person in
god’s eyes, allowing them
to go to heaven when they
die. As well as the day
lasting too long meaning
throughout the day they
are faced with many
temptations of wrong
doings.
Somethings gone inside me
and I can't get it back
Suggests the theme of
redemption and that many
people deep down want to
do a good thing and become
a good person but there is a
theme of regret as people
don't live to their own
intentions or to the
intentions they believe God
would want.
Oh heaven, oh heaven
This has religious
connotations due to
Emile’s faith as a
Christian
When I'm stealing from the
poor
This could be interpreted as
the money Emeli gains from
being a celebrity however
she is surrounded by
people who have a lack of
money therefore her music
is seen as stealing from the
poor as she gets money
from people listening to her
music. Emeli would be from
a B socio economic group
and the people represented
in the video and the lyrics
are from a D or an E
background.
4. You're not gonna like me
I'm nothing like before
This could be interpreted the
feeling of because she is a
celebrity the people surrounded
around her will no longer like her
because of what she has become.
Or give me one more try again
Oh heaven, oh heaven
This could relate to the theme of
redemption again in the sense
forgiveness is necessary to have
the guarantee of going to heaven
5. Mis en scene - Appearance
Costume hair and makeup is a large part in the music video as the appearance of
multiple different characters is constantly taking place all throughout the video. Emeli
Sande, her appearance constructs a rather significant message as she’s dressed in all
black this is important to the video as all throughout the video she is portrayed as an
angel however the fact that she’s dressed in all black in a way contradicts to her angelic
portray and juxtaposes her imagery.
6. Mis en scene - Appearance
Emeli’s makeup is done professionally, unlike all the other people presented in the
music video, suggesting that she’s more important than all the other people and giving
her a sense of superiority. As mentioned previously all the other people shown in the
video look less dramatic and more plain both makeup wise and outfit wise. Their
extensively simple appearance may be done in order to present them as ordinary
people and convey a clear contrast between the artist and the ‘ordinary’ people.
7. Mis en scene – Mode of address
The beginning of the music video Emeli seems to portray a sad emotion as she’s
looking away from the camera, down to the floor. This can also suggest that she’s in
deep thought or simply in some sort of distress.
Extreme close- up shots are used especially on Emeli while she’s singing with direct
mode of address throughout. This can be done in order to emphasise on her strong
feelings towards the subject she’s trying to deliver in her song. The close- ups which
show just Emile’s eyes are most effective at portraying her deep emotions as she’s
directly looking at the camera, meaning she’s attempting to look at the audience and
relate to them on a more personal level.
8. Mis en scene - Setting
The video was based in Bethnal Green London to create a video that will connect with
the audiences that will be viewing the video. By having the video based in a location that
has streets, tunnels, corner shops and parks makes it more realistic for the viewers as
every town and city contains these types of locations and so many have seen the
locations that feature in the video.
Not only that but members of the public also feature in the background of many of the
different shops, you also see a variety of different cars on the streets, this makes the
video realistic too creating a very relatable scene of cities and town areas, this makes the
viewers fell more connected with the video as they fell that the video is based in an area
near them.
9. Connotations
Black Dress: Wearing black in a video with religious
themes is not coincidental. Black can connote
seriousness and reservation. Emeli is serious in the
messages which she conveys. Her black dress allows
her to be covered and have a serious ambience to the
music video. This may relate to ideas of those who
experience issues e.g. homeless people, (also
portrayed in the video) ,being reserved and separated
from wider communities.
10. Camera Work
A high angle shot frames the shot of a woman walking in a red
dress. An audience is likely to presume that she is a prostitute.
This high angle shot therefore indicates that she is heading out
into a world where she is highly vulnerable as she is surrounded
by the risk of danger and death(which are also connotations of
the colour red).
Close up shots are used to capture despair among a diverse range
of people, again relating to the effect the lows of society has had
on them.
Close up shots also stress that they close their eyes in pain. There
is also an extreme close up shot of the stars eyes in time with the
lyrics, ‘will you recognise me’.
11. Editing
Edits and cutting follow the tempo of the song and will cut
on the beat.
Cutting across master shots in different locations.
Predominance of jump cuts and match cuts.
Slow motion to reflect the tempo in the song.
Colour grading to reflect the tone or genre of the song.
Special effects to make the video visually interesting and
appealing.
Graphics and subtitles can be used to introduce the artist
and or lyrics of the song
12. CAGED
Class –
The binary opposition between middle
class and the unemployed is constructed
through the use of the visuals between
Emeli Sande as a celebrity and the
homeless people shown in the video.
The representation is shown through
costume and props such as Emeli Sande
wearing a black dress with professional
make up whereas a homeless man is
shown with torn clothes.
13. CAGED
Age –
The video displays all ages from children to adults in their 60’s.Children
connote innocence. This highlights an extreme difference between the
downfall as an adult and the innocence of children. The theme of
innocence links back to the title of the song ‘heaven’ as innocence is
associated with being a heavenly character of goodness. This stresses how
big of a concept and sin it is to steal from the poor, whether it is in a literal
or allegorical way.
14. CAGED
Gender –
Both genders are shown positively and negatively.
The artist who is female is shown as caring by
spreading awareness of the situation of
homelessness and the underclass in London.
Women in this video are also presented negatively
such as the representation of the women in the red
dress presented as a prostitute. Men are also shown
negatively in the way they are seen in this video as
homeless and not having finical stability.
15. CAGED
Ethnicity –
British identity is clearly represented
through the use of setting , costume and
props. The music video shows a range of
ethnicity that is reflective of British
multiculturalism such as the artist being
from having a Zambian cultural heritage.
16. CAGED – Ethnicity Theory
Alvarado's
Racial Stereotypes Theory (1987)
Four key themes
in racial representations:
Exotic
Dangerous
Humorous
Pitied
Dangerous – Danger is shown in
terms of racial stereotypes in the
way a child was left on the stairs by
himself with no adult showing
isolation of the children in that
area.
Pitied – Pity is shown
through the direct mode
of address in terms of
camera work making the
audience sympathise
with the people they see
especially with different
ethnicities.
17. CAGED
Disability – All people
shown in the video are
able bodied reinforcing
the stereotype that the
disabled are less visible in
society.
