1. Girls Aloud - Call The Shots – (dir. Sean de Sparengo2007 )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPWUyAZZfK0&feature=artist
Un-stereotypical view of girls as they are represented as independent and mentally
strong, the male normally has a hold on the female creates a binary opposition.
Performance- Singing and Dancing
Narrative- Burning the photo, ignoring the missed call, represents something’s gone
wrong but they are independent enough to get through it, un-stereotypical because
males normally think they always get their own way.
Conceptual- On the beach, in the dark, the darkness representing that the love is no
longer there, like the sun is no longer there.
Phones, A photograph, A lighter, White flags- purity.
Colours of Purple and White- Romance, Royalty and Purity, shows the girls have
more power over the male than he does with them.
Battlefield kind of setting/ also a house and by a pool.
Battlefield to represent the love in the video isn’t easy.
Bright lights to emphasize the fact that they are trying to make a point and take a
stand for what they believe in. This also attracts the attention of the audience.
It meets the audience’s expectations as it is viewing females as the more powerful
gender. This is because most of Girls Aloud’s fan base is female; therefore by stating
that females are more powerful is making them agree with the video and the band.
As the video appeals to the audience they will start to like the band more and follow
their other albums.
The video gives the impression it would be good to live in a world similar to in the
videos as it is more suitable for females to be treated as equal to men and not
messed around by them and treated unfairly.
2. Radiohead: Knives Out (dir. Michel Gondry, 2008)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ1iMQA0egc
Male and female doctors and nurses.
Nonlinear narrative- not in a certain order, this makes it postmodern.
Describing the love of the male and female.
The heart is used to symbolise love.
The bed that the character is lying on is a copy of the children’s game
operation, and the fact that the character is still alive after removing some of
her organs suggests that their love is strong.
Set in a hospital room and a train carriage.
Can see the filming of the video, the use of continuity editing to make it look
as if it is one shot.
The video is very confusing, which the audience do not expect, therefore they
are surprised. It does not conform to convention as it is not a traditional
music video.
3. Too Close- Maddi Jane featuring CJ Holland
http://youtu.be/beb1-XHLA1o
Establishing Shot- CJ Holland walking down a long empty road, this is to establish the
setting, as it has no road markings this suggests the scene is set in America, this is
also backed up by a large farmhouse to the left of CJ Holland.
High angle shot- the camera is at a higher angle to represent that he is not as
important as Maddi Jane is in the video as he is only the feature artist.
CJ Holland- typical American teenager, dressed in a navy blue and white sports
hoody and jeans. Open body language suggests he is innocent.
The narrative of the video suggests that two young teenagers fall in love and then
break up, Maddi Jane gives the male a wristband which says ‘Maddi Jane’ CJ Holland
is then represented as the teenage boy in the future. There is the use of a medium
shot to show them both sat on a park bench this is to show the changes between the
same person as their life has progressed, but their love for Maddi Jane remains the
same as it ever did. The end scene shows Maddi Jane walking towards the door to
open it to the young boy, whilst the older boy CJ Holland also knocks on the door
and is greeted by the older version of Maddi Jane, he then reveals the wristband to
her after all these years to show that he still feels the same way that he used to all
these years ago. This use of a non-linear narrative make it seem like the video is CJ
Holland’s though process and he cannot think straight until he gets the love of his life
back.
Props- black wristband with ‘Maddi Jane’ written on in a white serif font, the serif
font is used to represent femininity and class, whilst the white text is used to
represent purity and innocence within the artist.
Lighting- bright light to represent a summers day. The summer’s day is used to
represent the fact that the love may blossom again like a flower in the summer.
The ideology of the video is used to represent the fact that a world filled with love is
better than one without. The moral behind the video is that even if it is from your
past you should just go for it instead of living to regret it in the future.
Diegetic sound- the words which the two artists are singing. Non diegetic sound- the
beats over the sound, which has been added after the recording.
This video meets the expectations of the audience as it has a happy ending for the
couple this makes the audience happy.
Maddi Jane sat in a box in the middle of her bedroom with 2 guitars in the
background, this suggests that music is a very important thing in her life and it is how
she expresses her views and opinions.
4. Demi Lovato- Give Your Heart A Break
http://youtu.be/1zfzka5VwRc
Performer- Demi Lovato, pop artist. Un-stereotypical pop artist as she as auburn
coloured hair, this is very unusual for a pop artist. Also she is dressed in a black
bikers jacket this suggests that she has an edge to her and she maybe will not remain
a pop artist forever. Her behaviour is mysterious but it is very clear that she is trying
to win her previous boyfriend back perhaps because of argument; however the video
focuses on their relationship and their memories.
The narrative of the video is linear as she has an idea of how to win her boyfriend
back and then she begins to travel to his house. She then begins to stick photographs
of her and him on the building outside of his house, the camera then pans up to his
house as he notices the picture and all the pictures form a massive love heart shape.
Props used are the photographs of the couple, also she uses her hands clenched as
fists to express her emotion and how much she is missing him and wants him back.
The setting of the video is mainly on the street whilst she is travelling to her
boyfriend’s house, however the video does contain flashbacks of her happy
memories from their relationship.
The camera shots used mainly consist of a medium shot to show Demi Lovato singing
and walking, this is to connote she is determined to get to her boyfriend’s house to
express her true feelings for him.
The video consists of diegetic sound as the artist is singing the song therefore can
hear the sound.
The video meets the audiences expectations as they expect Demi to get her
boyfriend back and at the end of the video is looks as if she does and then he video
ends, therefore this looks as if they are back together, which overall concludes the
video effectively.
