Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the vitelline duct, which normally connects the yolk sac to the embryo. In some cases, the proximal end of this duct persists after birth as Meckel's diverticulum. It is a true diverticulum located on the antimesenteric border of the ileum about 2 feet from the ileocecal valve. It can cause intestinal obstruction, inflammation resembling appendicitis, or involvement in other diseases due to its possible gastric or pancreatic tissue contents.
