Edward Lawrence will give a presentation on measuring IPv6 adoption in South Africa. He will provide an overview of IPv6, discuss IPv6 adoption levels in South Africa which have been slow, and compare it to levels in other countries which have seen faster growth. He will also review IPv6 traffic levels at network access points in South Africa, noting a large increase in IPv6 traffic and peers in recent months after initiatives to provide IPv6 training and free IPv6 transit were undertaken to help speed adoption.

KENET has established an internet measurements infrastructure in Kenya to provide tools for measuring internet quality, supporting engineering and policy research, and providing measurement capabilities to the global internet community. This includes deploying Measurement Lab, RIPE Atlas probes, and perfSONAR nodes to monitor bandwidth subscriptions, end-to-end reachability, and diagnose network performance issues across long-distance links. While uptake of these tools by researchers and consumer groups in Kenya has been low so far, KENET aims to promote greater use of the open data to analyze internet service quality and support research.

AFRINIC is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Adiel Akplogan is stepping down after 10 years as CEO, and Patrisse Deesse has been appointed interim CEO. AFRINIC membership has grown to over 1,100 members, and it has distributed over 12 million IPv4 addresses and 3 million IPv6 addresses in 2014. AFRINIC is working on various projects including DNS anycast, a new WHOIS system, and capacity building programs in Africa. It aims to have 250 network probes and 11 anchors for its ATLAS project by 2016.

Pushing the Frontier: Exploring the African Web Ecosystem

Pushing the Frontier: Exploring the African Web Ecosystem
The document presents a methodology for exploring the African web ecosystem by mapping how users in Africa access websites. The methodology involves using RIPE Atlas probes to collect DNS and HTTP performance data for global and regional websites. This includes identifying the locations of content caches serving African networks and measuring the performance of websites from probes in Africa. APNIC Update @ RIPE 71
APNIC provides Internet number resources and services to support the Asia Pacific region. In 2015, APNIC saw increases in IPv6 and IPv4 delegations, IPv4 transfers, and ASN assignments. APNIC also expanded training programs, conducted outreach at NOG events, improved MyAPNIC services, deployed IPv6 and security initiatives, performed Internet measurements, and collaborated globally with other RIRs. APRICOT 2016 will be held in Auckland, New Zealand in February.

IPv6 Deployment: Where are we now?

HijackLoader Evolution: Interactive Process Hollowing
CrowdStrike researchers have identified a HijackLoader (aka IDAT Loader) sample that employs sophisticated evasion techniques to enhance the complexity of the threat. HijackLoader, an increasingly popular tool among adversaries for deploying additional payloads and tooling, continues to evolve as its developers experiment and enhance its capabilities.
In their analysis of a recent HijackLoader sample, CrowdStrike researchers discovered new techniques designed to increase the defense evasion capabilities of the loader. The malware developer used a standard process hollowing technique coupled with an additional trigger that was activated by the parent process writing to a pipe. This new approach, called "Interactive Process Hollowing", has the potential to make defense evasion stealthier.
