- In the meantime, the growth of the Internet has been impressive. Almost a billion new Internet users every five years. Steady. Almost half of the worlds total population are connected.
- Conservative predictions say that we are approaching 3 billion Internet users this year. And optimistic views say that by 2020 we will have 5 billion users globally.
- Something that is quite obvious is that the means for connecting most of those users is through mobile broadband. Estimates by Ericcson say that we have reached 2 billion mobile broadband subscriptions. And this is not all. We are talking about Internet of things here. Cisco has predicted that there will be 3 times more devices connected to the Internet than people, estimated 25 billion devices in 2015.
- Hence the call for a new story. The story of IPv6.
- For a start, the size of the IPv6 space is 340 trillion, trillion, trillion addresses. This is a very difficult number to imagine.
