Educational Technology:-
Concept
Approach
Scope
Educational technology is made up of education and
technology
Education:-it has been derived from latin words ‘educare’ ,
‘educo ’ etc., Meaning ‘to train’, ‘to instruct’, ‘to put’, ‘to
draw out’, or lead fourth. Thus education is an act or
process of accuaring and imparting knowledge skills and
attitudes.
Technology:-the word technology is derived from two greek
words, ‘technique’ and ‘logia’. Technique means ‘art or skill’
and logia means ‘science of study’. Thus technology is the
science of study of an art or skill.
CONCEPT OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
There are two meaning of educational technology . They are
1. Technology in education
2. Technology of education
1.Technology in education
Technology in education refers to the use of the technological
advancement in terms of various equipment , materials and
machines for educational purposes . It involves the use of audio-
visual equipments, electronic devices like projectors ,films ,radio
,T.V , teaching machines , computers etc.,
Technology in educational serve the following purposes.
 It provides the needed equipments for the realization of different
functions of education.
 Enables training the teachers to handle and make optimum use
of equipments.
 Develop a positive actitude towards these appliances.
2.Technology of education
It is the application of phychology of
learning theories , principle of instruction ,
curriculam and learning to the process of
education .Technology of education is the
techniques and methodologies of the
teaching learning process.
There fore educational technology
accept in its fold both technology of
education as well as technology in
education.
1. According to Leith (1967) educational
technology is the application of scientific
knowledge about learning and the
conditions of learning to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency of teaching and
learning.
2. Educational technology is the development
, application and evaluation of the system
techniques and aids to improve the process
of human learning(National Council of
Educational Technology-UK)
Eric Ashley (1967) talks of 4 revolutions in education
1. Revolution of shifting the task of educating the once from parent
to teachers and home to school. (oral teaching)
2. Revolution of adaption of the written word as a tool of
education.(invention of writing)
3. Revolution as a result of invension of printing and wild
availability of books and other teaching learning
material.(invention of printing)
4. The fourth revolution is the development in electronics ,notably
those involving the Radio, T.V, cassette recorder and computer
and development of systems consernt that is the fourth revolution
is the educational technology it self.
EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AS THE FOURTH
EDUCATIONAL REVOLUTION
 Hardware approach/Product approach-
educational technology 1.
 Software approach/Process approach-
educational technology 2.
 System approach-educational
technology 3.
Approaches of educational technology
• Educational technology is the application of
scientific principles to education.
• Educational technology place trust on
development of methods and technique for
effective teaching and learning.
• Educational technology fecilitate learning by
controlling media and methods.
• Educational technology used electronic media in
education.
• Educational technology emphasize the
designing and measuring instruments for testing
learning outcome.
• Educational technology includes teaching
technology like micro teaching , programmed
PRINCIPLES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
1. It encourages reciprocity and cooperation among
students
2. It encourages contact between students and
faculty
3. It uses active learning technologies
4. It gives prompt feedback
5. It emphasize time on task
6. It communicates high expectations
7. It respects diverge , talents and ways of learning
Objectives Of Educational
Technology
1. Individualizing Instruction
2. Improving The Quality Of Education
3. Meeting The Problem Of Quantity
4. Providing Life Long Education
ADVANTAGES OF EDUCATIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
1. Easy to access course material
2. Student motivation
3. Wide participation
4. Improved student writing
5. Subject made easier to learn
1. Lack of proper training
2. Limited access to sufficient
quantities of a technology
3. Extra time required for many
implementations of educational
technology
DISADVANTAGES OF
EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
The term of education includes teaching , learning
and training .Similarly the scope of educational
technology is also much wider some general working
areas of educational technology can be pointed out
us follows
1. Determination of educational objectives
2. Selection of teaching learning strategies
3. Area of curriculum construction
4. Selection of audio-visual materials
5. Areas of teacher training
6. Evaluating the effectiveness of teaching learning
system
Significance of educational
technology
 It emphases upon developing methods and
techniques for effective learning
 It is an action of scientific knowledge to
education and training
 It embodies organization of learning
conditions for realizing the goals of education
 It values designing and measuring instruments
for testing learning outcomes
 It makes easy learning by controlling
environment, media and methods
