2. Meaning, objectives and scope of educational technology.
INTRODUCTION
Educational technology is the use of both physic hardware, software and educational
theoretic to facilitate learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing
appropriate technological process and resources. The word technology is derived from the
Greek word “technic” meaning art or skill and “logia” meaning science or study. thus
technology is the science of study of an art or skill.
Meaning
Educational technology a system of 5 M’s. Educational technology is a system in education
in which machines, materials ,media ,men and methods are interrelated and work
together for the fulfillment of specific educational objectives. ‘Technology explosion ‘ has
yielded several new machines ,materials and media which have great potential for use in
the education enterprise. A judicious use of these together with new functions and role s
of educational personnel can bring about more efficient and effective teaching -
learning.
Educational Technology is an applied or practical study which aims at
maximizing educational effects by “controlling “ such relevant factors as educational
purpose ,educational content, teaching materials, educational environment, conduct of
students, behavior of instructors and interrelations between students and instructors. If is a
branch of study in which the results of engineering techniques information science, natural
sciences, behavioral sciences and human technology are used to promote the efficiency of
education.
The national Council of educational Technology Report – UK (1969)gives the wider
meaning educational technology in these words, “If perhaps needs to be reiterated that the
Council seer educational technology as having a wider connotation than simply the use of
electro – mechanical and other aids in teaching.
3. According to J. Bloomer (1973) : Educational technology is the application of
scientific knowledge about learning to practical learning situations.
According to National Council of educational technology, UK (1967): Educational
Technology is the development application and evaluation of systems techniques and aids
to improve the process of human learning.
Objectives In terms of Specific Class – Room Teaching (Micro level
Objectives)
Identifying and analyzing the characteristics and educational needs of the students.
Acter mining the specific classrooms objectives and stating them in behavioral terms.
Analyzing the contents of instruction and organizing them in proper sequence.
Identifying the available teaching – learning materials and resources.
Identifying the nature of the interaction of the sub-systems like students, teachers
teaching – learning materials, content of instruction and methodologies
Evaluating the effectiveness of the class-room teaching in terms of the student’s
performance or change in behavior .
Providing appropriate feedback to the students as well as teachers to bring
modification in the teaching learning process.
General Objectives of Educational Technology
Hillard Jason has stated the following major objectives of educational technology.
1. Transmitting Information
2. Serving as role models.
3. Assisting the practice of specific skills.
4. Contributing to the provision of feedback.
Mackenzie and others describe the following four main objectives of educational
technology .
° The need to reach more students.
° To reach them with an improved range of learning materials.
° To offer greater opportunities for independent study.
° To prevent at least a limited student response.
4. Objectives In terms of Broad Educational Goals(Macro -level
Objectives)
Identification of educational needs and aspirations of the community.
Determination of the aims of education broad strategies and structure of education.
Developing a suitable curriculum with interaction of arts, human values and
sciences.
Identification of man material resources and strategies for achieving the desired
aims of education.
Developing certain models leading to improvement in the process of teaching –
learning.
Identification of major constraints in environment and the ways and means of
tackling them.
Assisting in extending vocational opportunities to masses especially neglected
sectors of society.
Managing the entire educational system covering planning ,implementation and
evaluation phases.
Scope of Educational Technology
Scope of educational technology is as wide as education itself. It’s scope ranges from
the concrete educational process to the most abstract and subtle ones. It includes the use
of hardware and software and systems analysis in various educational operations. There are
three major areas in education in which its scope is very wide . These are:
Technology related to general to educational administrable management.
Technology related to general educational testing .
Technology related to the instructional process.
Rowntra (1973) has stated the following as the province of educational technologist:
Identifying the aims and objectives of learning.
Planning the learning environment.
Exploring and structuring the subject matter.
5. Selecting appropriate teaching strategies and learning media .
Evaluating the effectiveness of the learning system.
Using the insights gained from evaluation to improve their effectiveness for the
future.
Conclusion
Educational technology is a wide field .Therefore one can find many definitions,
some of which are conflicting .Educational technology can be considered as either as a
design science or as a collection of different research interest addressing fundamental
issues of learning, teaching anti social organization. Educational technology emphasizes
communication skills and approaches to teaching and learning through the judicious use and
integration of diverse media. Practitioners in educational technology seek new and effective
ways of organizing the teaching and learning process through the best possible application
of technological developments.
