Maine currently invests $9.9 million in tobacco prevention, but the CDC recommends $18.5 million. Increasing funding to the CDC level could reduce youth smoking rates by 9.2% and prevent 7,840 kids from becoming adult smokers and 2,500 kids from premature death from smoking. This would also reduce future healthcare costs by $137.2 million, including $38.9 million in reduced Medicaid spending.
