1. EXPLORING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND
SOCIAL EXPERIENCES OF ABANDONED CHILDREN
IN THE PROVINCE
OF ORIENTAL MINDORO
Proponent: BRENDA A. MONTIANO
2. CHAPTER I.
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING/BACKGROUND
Introduction
Success in education is measured by the academic performance over the years.
Education as a social enterprise has over the centuries defied one objective definition
because its main concern is with man, how to form and shape the ideal person for the
society. Education means enabling the mind to find out the ultimate truth which
emancipates us from the bondage of the dust and gives us the wealth, not of things
but of inner light, not of power but of love, making the truth its own and giving
expression to it (Aggarwal 2005).
3. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
The study is anchored on the following theories:
Social Cognitive Theory by albert Bandura (1985) is important to note
in this study. It is a learning theory based on the premise that a person learns
by observing his/her environment and that human thought processes are
central to understanding personality.
Another theory is by Abraham Maslow’s Maslow’s (1943,1954)
Hierarchy of Needs. It is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-
tier model of human needs which is now expanded to include cognitive and
aesthetic needs and later transcendence needs.

5. Statement of the Problem
• Generally, this study aims to determine the academic performance and social
experiences of abandoned elementary pupils in the town of Pinamalayan, Oriental
Mindoro.
Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of children in terms of:
– Gender;
– Age;
– Nutritional status.
– Nature of abandonment
• Socio Economic Status
• Teenage pregnancy
• Early/broken marriage
• Parent’s disability
6. Statement of the Problem
2. What are the social experiences of the abandoned children by the following factors:
– With their peers;
– Relatives;
– Teachers; and
– People in the community
3. What is the overall grade average of the abandoned children in:
– English;
– Mathematics;
– Science;
– Araling Panlipunan;
– Filipino;
– Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao;
– MAPEH; and
– Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan?
7. Statement of the Problem
3. How are the relationship between the academic performance and social
experiences of abandoned children?
4. What are the differences in the academic performance of the abandoned
children when compared by their demographic profile?
5. What are the differences in the social experiences of the abandoned
children when compared by their demographic profile?
6. How significant is the influence of the social experiences on the academic
performance of the abandoned children?
7. What action plan may be developed to assist the abandoned children in
their learning?
8. Statement of Hypotheses
The following hypothesis were formulated by the researcher.
• There is no significant is the influence of the social experiences on the
academic performance of the abandoned children.
• There is no differences in the academic performance of the abandoned
children when compared by their demographic profile.
• There is no differences in the social experiences of the abandoned children
when compared by their demographic profile
9. Scope and Limitations/Delimitations of the Study
• The study deals on the relationship between the academic performance in
the different subject areas and social experiences of abandoned children
in the province of Oriental Mindoro. There are 15 towns in the province
and are more than 300 elementary schools in the said province. This study
covers all the subject areas namely: English, Mathematics, Science, Araling
Panlipunan, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Filipino, MAPEH and Edukasyong
Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan and the general average and the social
experiences with their peers, relatives, teachers and people in the
community. Their grades in the first and second grading period are
considered as their academic achievement. All the findings in the research
are based on the questionnaire which deals on the demographic profile in
terms of gender, age, nutritional status, and the nature of abandonment.
10. CHAPTER II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• Nature of Abandonment
• Child abandonment occurs when a parent, guardian, or person in
charge of a child either deserts a child without any regard for the child's
physical health, safety or welfare and with the intention of wholly
abandoning the child, or in some instances, fails to provide necessary care
for a child living under their roof.
• According to Fagan, Fitzgerald and Rector (2008) fifty percent of those
children who are born this year with both parents, before reaching their
18th birthday, they will experience the divorce of their parents.
11. • Social Experiences
• When readers think of the word abandonment they often think of months
or years, when in reality a court system can deem abandonment after 2
days If a custodial parent simply leaves with no explanation (Thorne,
2015). If the non-custodial has not kept in communication with their child
the court can keep the child and put him or her in a benign location.
CHAPTER II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
12. • Academic performance
• According to Bell (2010), parents, devoted a lot of resources to their
children because they believed good academic performance will provide a
stable future for them. Also Wilkins (2008) opines that many educational
authorities have sought to find out reasons for the downward trend in the
academic performance of pupils.Many factors and reasons have been
given as being responsible for continuous falling standard in the academic
performance of our present educational system

13. CHAPTER III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Research Method/s and Design/s
• The researcher will employ descriptive research design, causal-comparative and
correlational research. The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data
and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of
research is to study frequencies, averages, and other statistical calculations.
Although this research is highly accurate, it does not gather the causes behind a
situation. Descriptive research is mainly done when a researcher wants to gain
better understanding of a topic. Correlational technique of research will also applied
to determine the degree of relationship between the independent variables and the
dependent variables applied. Whereas the Causal-comparative research will
attempt to identify a causative relationship between an independent variable and a
dependent variable. The relationship between the independent variable and
dependent variable is usually a suggested relationship.
14. CHAPTER III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Population Frame and Sampling Scheme/Study Population
• The sample size will be determined with the use of descriptive-correlation
research design. . It is used to determine the ideal sample size for a population.
When it is not possible to study the entire population a smaller sample is taken
using random sampling technique. This will allow the researcher to sample the
population with the prescribed degree of accuracy. The distribution of the
respondent schools by course is shown.
15. CHAPTER III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Description of Subjects/Respondents
• The participants of the study will be the public elementary schools in five
(5) towns of Oriental Mindoro Division specifically the reported abandoned
children by district and by school.
16. CHAPTER III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Statistical Treatment of Data (Quantitative Analysis of Data)
• The data gathered by the researchers were tabulated and statistically
analyzed based on the purposes of the study. The researcher used the
following statistical tools.
• Percentage. The percentage will be used to compute the value of the total
cases. Weighted Mean – this will be used to determine the level of social
experiences of the respondents.
