 There has a continuing debate in family research in an attempt
to define some of the factors that would lead to a lasting
relationship between a man and a woman.
 this led to an establishment of a body of knowledge that gather
day both premarital and post martial.
 Despite the inconsistent of results have shown that people who
are similar are likely to be attracted to each other. However,
similarity have been noted with a number of characteristics such
as ;
◦ Area of residence
◦ socioeconomic level
◦ Religious Affiliation
 the existing debate that has been there for a period of time is
that if homogamy or heterogamete are the ones that form the
basis of mate selection.
 This research is aimed at seeking to show that homothermous
can also operate in mate selection.
 People do differ on personal traits and people
will always seek someone with traits that they
lack, this is known as ideal-self fulfillment
theory.
 This proposal is aimed also at finding the
possibility of this kind of theory.
 In doing so, this presentation will focus on
providing the literature that provides the
literature focusing on the theory of
complementary nee in mate selection.
 This section will focus on the
following;
◦ Theory of complementary need in
mate selection
 This is a theory presented by Robert
Winch, which provides that when
selecting a mate people chooses mates
that have opposing traits so that they
can receive the highest satisfaction they
need.
 to suggest that partners usually
chooses people who their strength does
compensate their lack
◦ Theory of ideal-self fulfillment in
mate selection
◦ Proposed by Karp, Jackson and
Lester in 1970 it’s a theory that
provides that homogenous require a
process and complementary that
operate in mate selection.
◦ they states that mate selection is
basically based on mate selection
 with arguments coming from Karp, Jackson and
Lester tit brings out two hypothesis.
◦ i. One actual self will resemble their perception of their
soul mate more than it would be expected on the basis
of chance alone.
◦ ii. In rating their description differently by subject of
they actual-self and ideal-self the subject of perception
mate’s actual –self will resemble his or her ideal-self.
 To validate the above hypotheses data will be
obtained from the subject perception and
compared to the chance expectation.
Additionally, the subject’s perception shall be
compared to his or her mate’s perception.
 To conduct the research effectively
some of the measurement tools
shall be used.
 Interpersonal checklist (ICL) Form
designed by Rolfe LA Forge and
Robert Suczek shall be sued.
 it is used to measure personal
variables that are described as
Interpersonal Diagnosis of
personality.
 it can also be used to measure
someone’s conscious of describing
themselves.
 It shall be designed in a way it
examines all phrases that apply to
one person before proceeding.
 Sampled used in this study will be 36
engaged couple and 20 married couples.
 For one to be considered to have been
married they should produce a marriage
certificate from a recognized church.
 to be married it means that you are living
together.
 to be engaged couple should have
approached a priest to make arrangement for
their wedding.
 The 36 engaged couples were tested using the
ICL weekly.
 each two couples will be engaged in a test
session.
 they should be encouraged to complete the test.
 Using the discussion leader, they will provide the
marriage course.
 After providing their personal data they will be
subjected to answering four answer sheets.
 they should be provided with answering
procedures and the statistical analysis on how
the study should be presented.
 Using the three answers sheet
one will fall to the eight
patterns.
 for instance if the item was
classified as an A, the item
should be checked as actual-
self and ideal-self but not
checked I the mate’s actual
self thus not perceived as the
mate classified as B. each item
shall be classed with
A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H (As
indicated on the right).
 The study will report the
number of homogenous that
has closest friends.
 Consent
◦ The participants should be provided
with maternal consent and paternal
concent.
◦ The respondent should be provide with
all the consent of the pregnant woman
and a father if they are pregnant.
◦ The principle standards should be
guided by the day to day activities that
have been established by the
cooperative values.
◦ the participants ought to be respected
with their contributions to the research
 Discrimination in recruitment
should not be practiced since it will
inhibit the success of women.
