What is Gender Stereotyping?
It can be defined as the overgeneralization
of characteristics or differences or attributes
of a certain group based on their sex.
Types of stereotypes
It refers to the behaviors, attributes,
attitudes, norms, hierarchy of values,
manners, occupations, social rules and
relations associated with men within a
particular society.
1. MASCULINITY
It refers to the behaviors, attributes,
attitudes, norms, hierarchy of values,
manners, occupations, social rules and
relations associated with girls or women
within a particular society.
2. FEMINITY
Gender stereotyping is mainly visible in:
 Physical Appearance
 Domestic Behavior
 Occupation
 Personality Traits
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Women
■ Women should be
slim and short
compared to men.
■ Women are expected
to grow hair.
Men
■ Men should be tall,
stout, with broad
shoulder, wide chest.
■ Men are expected
with short hair.
DOMESTIC BEHAVIOR
Women
 Women are expected to
cook for the family.
 Raising taking care of
children are expected to
be the responsibility of
women at home.
Men
 men are expected to
govern or rule the
family.
 Men are expected to
earn for the livelihood
of the family.
OCCUPATION
Women
 Women needs jobs with
less income.
 They have less chance in
decision making jobs such
as positions in politics etc.
 They were assigned to do
jobs such as school
teachers, nurses etc.
Men
 Men need jobs with high income.
 They enjoy all jobs that demands
decision making situations.
 Doctors, Politicians, Engineers,
Plumbers are the fields where
men are expected to be
dominant than female.
PERSONALITY TRAITS
Women
■ Women are weaker, less
competitive, less adaptable
to harsh environments etc.
■ Women are shy, passive,
submissive.
■ They are expected to be
more concerned about
cleanliness.
Men
■ Men are more tolerant,
acceptable, tough etc.
■ Men are more aggressive,
dominant etc.
■ They are expected to be
usually lazy, messy, etc.
