Matt 6:14-21
Matt 6
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenlyFather will also
forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father
forgive your trespasses.
A social gospel for humanistic reformneeded for a peaceful kingdom on earth.
This doctrinally must be set in a Jewish setting with a primary application to the
second coming.
Luke 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that
is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us
from evil.
Mark 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought
againstany: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you
your trespasses.
Jas 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed
no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth againstjudgment.
Church-age forgiveness
Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving
one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Col 3:13 Forbearingone another, and forgivingone another, if any
man have a quarrel againstany: even as Christforgave you, so also
do ye.
Matt 6
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance:
for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily
I say unto you, They have their reward.
17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in
secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall rewardthee openly.
Just as in verses 1-6 on the subject of “alms-giving” it is a Jewish God
who is Father to Israel.
Exod 4:21-22 21 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest
to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before
Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart,
that he shall not let the people go.
22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my
son, even my firstborn:
God has always required his followers to have a discipline that
contradicts the natural emotions of human instinct.
2Sam 12:19-21 19 But when David saw that his servants
whispered, David perceivedthat the child was dead: therefore David
said unto his servants, Is the childdead? And they said, He is dead.
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed
himself, and changedhis apparel, and came into the house of the
LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he
required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast
done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but
when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
Lev 10:1-7 Nadab and Abihu are burnt by fire, for offeringstrange fire;
Aaron and his sons are forbidden to mourn for them.
Fasting:
 Christ’s prophecy
Matt 9:15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the
bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroomis with them? but
the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them,
and then shall they fast.
 Practice in the local church
Acts 13:2-3 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy
Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereuntoI
have calledthem.
3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on
them, they sent them away.
 Paul’s example
2Cor 11:27 In weariness andpainfulness, in watchings often, in
hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
1Tim 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtainedmercy, that in me first
Jesus Christmight shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them
which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
A righteous life must accompany a true fast for God to give
supernaturalpower
Zech 7:4-7 4 Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me,
saying,
5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying,
When ye fasted and mourned [Lev 16:29]
in the fifth and seventh month,
even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?
6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for
yourselves, and drink for yourselves?
7 Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath criedby the
former prophets, when Jerusalemwas inhabitedand in prosperity,
and the cities thereof roundabout her, when men inhabitedthe
south and the plain?
Isa 58:2-7 2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as
a nation that did righteousness, andforsook not the ordinance of
their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight
in approachingto God.
3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore
have we afflictedour soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in
the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of
wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to
be heardon high.
5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflicthis
soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spreadsackcloth
and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day
to the LORD?
6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of
wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go
free, and that ye break every yoke?
7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the
poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that
thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
Mark 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by
nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
Matt 6
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust
doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor
rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heartbe also.
“Treasures in heaven are only laid up as treasures on earth are laid
down”
Rom 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not
worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealedin us.
1Cor 3:12-13 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold,
silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare
it, because it shall be revealedby fire; and the fire shall try every
man's work of what sort it is.
2Cor 4:17-18 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment,
worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things
which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but
the things which are not seen are eternal.
Col 3:1-4 1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which
are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christin God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear
with him in glory.
1Thess 4:13-18 13 But I wouldnot have you to be ignorant,
brethren, concerningthem which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even
as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also
which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which
are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent
them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with
the voice of the archangel, andwith the trump of God: and the dead
in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together
with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we
ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfortone another with these words.
Real treasure is souls won to Christ
Mal 3:16-18 16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to
another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of
remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD,
and that thought upon his name.
17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when
I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own
son that serveth him.
18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the
wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
Zech 9:16 And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the
flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted
up as an ensign upon his land.
Prov 17:8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it:
whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
1Tim 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not
highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the livingGod, who
giveth us richlyall things to enjoy;
Heb 13:5-6 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and
be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee.
6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear
what man shall do unto me.
Prov 13:22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's
children: andthe wealth of the sinner is laidup for the just.
1Pet 1:3-4 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
which accordingto his abundantmercy hath begotten us again unto
a livelyhope by the resurrection of Jesus Christfrom the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, andundefiled, and that fadeth not
away, reservedin heaven for you,
