Literacy has always been an important part of my life. Unfortunately, I actually do not recall the
moment when I realized that I could read by myself. I also do not remember reading or writing in my
early years (kindergarten and first grade) or what my teachers taught me about literacy during that
time. However, that doesn t mean that literacy wasn t important to me. I have always loved reading.
My favorite moments from elementary school were when my favorite teachers would read to me and

Standage succeeded in delivering massive chunks of information in manageable portions. The book
was sensibly laid out to where it was easy to read and connections between subject areas could be
easily distinguished. It was enjoyable reading about the themes of religion as the pertained to the
drinks, and how supply and demand of each drink affected trade and commerce. An aspect of the book
one can appreciate is Standage s use of primary source quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The
quotes provided both insight into the time being discussed and a stepping stone of thought from which
one can approach the chapter that followed. The only dislike one could have is that the book made one
desire more details as a result of the entertaining method of delivering the
