Monitor and maintain your AEM optimally. Eliminate performance slowdowns
To manage and deliver content swiftly, you need a steady CQ environment. You can maximize the performance using the built-in monitoring and maintenance tools.
When a website is static, but needs authoring ability to change its content quickly, deploying a solution like AEM would involve the overhead of managing all the publish instances, dispatchers and their configuration.
The solution could be simplified to have AEM only for authoring and extract the authored content as HTML and their dependent resources and host it on a standard webserver.
This Article discusses the different approaches for doing this.
AEM6 comes with a fresh new repository backend designed for improved performance and scalability. This session introduces the new repository architecture and describes the key differences and improvements for developers and operations teams. Topics covered include content migration, backwards compatibility, key deployment scenarios and configuration options, and custom search indexes.

As SDN technologies become more mainstream, it is imperative to replicate the success of DevOps techniques from the IT world to bridge the gap that few envisioned in the first place –between the Application/Service and the Network layer.

Continuous Delivery with Jenkins and Wildfly (2014)Tracy Kennedy
A presentation on a continuous delivery pipeline that leverages Jenkins Enterprise, Jenkins Operations Center, Nexus, HAProxy, and Wildfly. Pipeline components run in Docker containers along with SkyDock/SkyDNS for service discovery and NSEnter for command-line access to containers.
DevOps and Continuous Delivery Reference Architectures (including Nexus and o...Sonatype
There are numerous examples of DevOps and Continuous Delivery reference architectures available, and each of them vary in levels of detail, tools highlighted, and processes followed. Yet, there is a constant theme among the tool sets: Jenkins, Maven, Sonatype Nexus, Subversion, Git, Docker, Puppet/Chef, Rundeck, ServiceNow, and Sonar seem to show up time and again.
Even basic AEM deployment involves some network communication. All services need to be aware of each other to make the entire AEM stack usable for both content editors and end users.
The truth is, basic AEM deployments are not that common these days. In many cases it's much more complex - there's plenty of services around you (search engines, caching servers, data feeds, etc) and you need to talk to them in this way or another. Even though that's not the case in your project, most probably you have more than one environment to deal with (unless you're Facebook, as they run just production). All in all it makes perfect sense to run service discovery tool in your AEM infrastructure, as in a long term it gets really painful to manage all these communication channels by hand.
During my talk I'd present how Cognifide combined Consul and Chef to:
- make sure AEM always talk to correct endpoint, no matter how many instances of given service we run
- no longer worry about hardcoded IP addresses in AEM configs or Chef cookbooks
- automatically pick up new services as they go online
- enable even faster, zero-downtime deployments
- orchestrate the entire AEM infrastructure
An interesting fact is that we were able to achieve all of these without a single change in our AEM app!
DevOps & Security from an Enterprise Toolsmith's Perspectivedev2ops
Slides from presentation by Alex Honor and Damon Edwards at DevOps Connect at RSA 2015 in San Francisco on April 20, 2015.
Abstract:
IT organizations are feeling the squeeze from seemingly conflicting business mandates. At one moment the message is “Go Go Go. DevOps, Lean Startup, Continuous Delivery… move faster and give more people access”. The next moment the message is “Be more secure. Compliance above all. Keep us out of the press!”. Damon Edwards and Alex Honor work with many enterprises who are facing these challenges. This talk is an in the trenches view of how these companies are responding and learning to go faster and be more secure.

As part of Adobe Experience Manager, CQ 5.6 provides a new Commerce Framework to build Experience Driven Commerce websites on top of a 3rd party Commerce Platform. This session provides an overview of the framework from an architectural perspective and presents some details of the reference implementation, based on the JCR repository.
The presentation covers a microservices architecture used for AEM-based system.
If we think of highly-scalable enterprise systems it’s worth considering moving from AEM-based design to microservices architecture. In this approach, some bigger logical parts are deployed separately, outside of AEM – all of these parts are called services. Of course, AEM is still there (it’s another service) and plays one of the most important roles - it delivers the user experience, i.e. websites, pages, their layout and static content. Most of the dynamic content though, is provided by other services deployed e.g. as a stand-alone applications on Tomcat or Node.js servers. The assembly of pages served by AEM and the dynamic content from other services is done with use of… another service. Sounds complicated? Although from deployment point of view it’s more complex than simple AEM-based approach, it brings a couple of significant advantages:
* Improved scalability – each service can be scaled separately. If you expect a lot of traffic and the majority of processing is related e.g. to search, then you can add another instance of search service only. You don’t need to replicate the whole system.
* Easier deployment – since the services are independent you can upgrade each of them easily whereas other services remain untouched.
* Faster development – you are not limited to OSGi technology, so you can develop each service with solutions which best suit the service needs.
* Reduced cost and time-to-market – thanks to above, the overall cost of change implementation and time needed to deploy it to production is reduced significantly
Rundeck is a robust and reliable application, very easy to use and it is Open Source. It helps to automate operational routines in remote environments, and it brings access facilities to authorized users in node servers

Lessons from Etsy: Avoiding Kitchen Nightmares - #ChefConf 2012Patrick McDonnell
Talk by Patrick McDonnell (@mcdonnps) at #ChefConf 2012
Chef makes it so easy to change configuration en masse that it can be dangerous if not used with certain precautions and in accordance with a well thought out testing workflow. In our use of Chef at Etsy, we have devised many in-house best practices in response to failures which have helped greatly in avoiding catastrophic outages. This talk will focus on mistakes we've made and how we've avoided repeating them by enforcing standards in cookbooks, testing changes before rollout through the use of environments and in conjunction with the Spork plugin for Knife, and linting cookbooks with Foodcritic. I'll also talk about using handlers intelligently to monitor Chef runs and how to generate reports from the myriad data available in CouchDB.
This talk will try to cover the most important techniques and best practices used when creating Django web application.
Overview of the topics covered:
- development general principles and goals
- python/django project initial setup - project layout, git&venv&pip&shell, settings
- central project shell command - contains all commands to manage project
- "IDE" - editor & shell
- edit/run/test cycle
- deploy/test-remotely cycle
Disclaimer: techniques and practices presented are current AUTHOR'S optimal choice used for usual django project.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?
How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
