Inspired by the talk "Using Rundeck and Chef to build DevOps Toolchains" given by Anthony Shortland during ChefConf 2012 (http://dev2ops.org/2012/05/using-rundeck-and-chef-to-build-devops-toolchains-at-chefcon/) we set out to include Rundeck as part of a loosely coupled toolchain when building the new datacenter at Bol.com. This talk explored how we took the ideas from Shortland's talk and implemented them in the context of Jenkins, Gerrit, Puppet and MCollective.

Continuous delivery is a powerful concept, but hard to achieve. One of the challenges is automating the setup of environments and the deployment of the Java EE applications. We have looked at and used quite some tools like for instance Chef, Puppet, Vagrant and Nolio. All tools had one thing in common: we had never used them. Why should we invest time in mastering those tools? There is a perfect alternative in Jenkins, a tool most developers are familiar with. Besides the basic Jenkins buildserver capabilities it offers quite some useful plugins like the Build Pipeline plugin. To setup environments the popular Docker project is used. Docker allows you to create containers from any application. Only some knowledge is required for the setup of the containers. The rest of the configuration is done through commands most people are quite familiar with.

Chef is a platform that enables this by transforming infrastructure into code using DevOps practices. AEM Author, Publish and Dispatcher instances can be fully configured and deployed as code with Chef. In this talk we will discuss how the open source AEM Chef Cookbook can be used to automate the deployment of AEM instances with Chef features like recipes, attributes, providers and resources. Out of the box, the AEM Chef Cookbook supports: - Unattended installation of AEM Author, Publish, and Dispatcher nodes. - Automatic search for and configuration of AEM cluster members using Chef searches. - Configuration for replication agents using the replicator provider. - Configurations for Dispatcher farms with the farm provider. - Deploying and removing AEM packages with the package provider. We will also discuss how AEM can be automated to supported different SSO and deployment scenarios like cold standby. Finally, we will cover how to extend the Cookbook to support your project specific needs.

Getting software released to users can be risky, time-consuming and painful. The solution is the ability to deliver reliable software continuously through build, test and deployment automation, and through improved collaboration between developers, testers and operations. In this tutorial we will present principles and technical practices that enable teams to incrementally deliver software of high quality and value into production whenever they want, and extremely fast. The size of the project or the complexity of its code base does not matter. In the first half of the tutorial we will introduce the concepts of continuous delivery, through continuous integration; and automation of the build, test and deployment process. We will also go through som basic principles and patterns for building automatable applications (architecture). We will cover experiences on team collaboration patterns and lastly; techniques for solving tasks such as an easy and comprehendible version control strategy. The second half of the tutorial we will be working with automated provisioning of agile infrastructure, including the use of tools (puppet) to automate the management of testing and production environments. We will go through some scripting lessons examplifying how to implement zero-downtime deploys (… and rollback – if something goes wrong!), with examples in both bash and Ruby. Along with controlling the start, stop, restart lifecycles during deploys, we will also show some simple techniques for backups, logging, error handling, monitoring and verification of application health that can make the automation more robust. We will also use servers "in the cloud" to demonstrate different techniques, and we hope to make it a fun day and to deliver software (examples) several times throughout the workshop. Required knowledge: Agile/Lean basics, Linux basics, version control basics, maven basics.

“I have stopped counting how many times I’ve done this from scratch” - was one of the responses to the tweet about starting the project called Spring Cloud Pipelines. Every company sets up a pipeline to take code from your source control, through unit testing and integration testing, to production from scratch. Every company creates some sort of automation to deploy its applications to servers. Enough is enough - time to automate that and focus on delivering business value. In this presentation we’ll go through the contents of the Spring Cloud Pipelines project. We’ll start a new project for which we’ll have a deployment pipeline set up in no time. We’ll deploy to Cloud Foundry and check if our application is backward compatible so that we can roll it back on production.

Cloud Migration services from your on-premise environment can sometimes be very simple and other times an extremely complicated project to implement. For either scenario, there are always considerations to bear in mind when doing so. This course has been designed to highlight these topics to help you ask the right questions to aid in a successful Cloud migration. Within this course, we look at how timing plays an important part in your project's success and why phased deployments are important. Security is also examined where we focus on a number of key questions that you should have answers to from a business perspective before your Cloud migration. One of the biggest decisions is your chosen public cloud vendor, how do you make the decision between the available vendors, what should you look for when selecting you will host your architecture, this course dives into this question to help you finalize your choice. Understanding the correct deployment model is essential, it affects how you architect your environment and each provides different benefits, so gaining the knowledge. I look at how you can break this question down to help you with your design considerations. We also cover service readiness from your on-premise environment and how to align these to the relevant Cloud services. Your design will certainly be different from your on-premise solution, I discuss the best approach when you start to think about your solution design, some of the dos and some of the don’ts. Once you have your design, it’s important to understand how you are actually going to migrate your services ensuring optimum availability and minimal interruption to your customer base, for example looking at Blue/Green and Canary deployments. Cloud migration allows for some great advantages within your business continuity plans, as a result, I have included a lecture to discuss various models that work great within the Cloud. Course Objectives By completing this course you will: Have greater visibility of some of the key points of a cloud migration Be able to confidently assess the requirements for your migration Intended Audience This course has been designed for anyone who works or operates in business management, business strategy, technical management, and technical operations. Prerequisites For this course, it's assumed that you have a working knowledge of cloud computing and cloud principles. What You Will Learn about Cloud Migration Introduction - This provides an introduction to the trainer and covers the intended audience. We will also look at what lectures are included in the course, and what you will gain as a student from attending the course. Time Management – How time plays an important part in successful cloud migration. We discuss the key points to allow time for and how to use it to plan a phased migration. Security – This lecture will give you the ability to ask the key security questions to the business before performing a migration to the Cloud.
